Free Guide to Blocking Spam Calls on Your Phone

How Spam Calls Work and Why You're Getting Them

Spam calls have become one of the most widespread problems for phone users. According to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), Americans received more than 4.7 billion robocalls in 2023 alone. Understanding how these calls happen helps you see why blocking technology matters and what options you have.

Spam callers use several methods to reach your phone. Many use Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology, which allows them to make calls through internet connections rather than traditional phone lines. This technology is inexpensive and lets scammers make thousands of calls at once. They often use software that automatically dials numbers in sequence, which is why you might get calls from numbers similar to yours—this practice is called "neighbor spoofing."

Scammers obtain phone numbers through various means. Some buy lists of numbers from data brokers, while others harvest numbers from websites, online forms, or social media. When you enter your phone number on a website without privacy protections, that information may end up in the hands of telemarketers or worse. Data breaches also expose millions of phone numbers to criminals.

The types of spam calls vary widely. Robocalls about car warranties are among the most common, followed by calls about credit card offers, student loans, and tech support scams. Some calls claim you have legal issues or tax problems. Others pretend to represent your bank or healthcare provider. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) reported that impersonation scams cost Americans over $8.6 billion in 2022.

Callers spoof numbers—making their calls appear to come from a different number than they actually do—to make calls seem legitimate. A call might display a local number, your bank's number, or a government agency's number. This makes it harder to identify scams and makes people more likely to answer.

Practical takeaway: Recognize that spam calls are a widespread issue using established technology. Your phone company and device manufacturer offer built-in tools that can reduce these calls. Being aware of common tactics helps you spot suspicious calls when they do reach you.

Built-In Phone Features for Blocking and Filtering Calls

Both Apple and Android phones include native call-blocking and filtering features that work without additional apps. These tools scan incoming calls against known spam databases and can filter calls based on your settings. Understanding what your phone already offers is the first step in reducing spam.

iPhone users can access call filtering through the Phone app settings. In the Settings menu, select Phone, then Call Filtering. Apple offers two options: "Silence Unknown Callers" and "Filter Unknown Callers." The "Silence Unknown Callers" feature sends calls from numbers not in your contacts, recent calls, or Mail directly to voicemail without ringing. "Filter Unknown Callers" uses Apple's database of known spam numbers to flag suspicious calls. You can also block individual numbers by opening the phone number in your recent calls list and selecting "Block this Caller."

Android phones have similar built-in tools that vary slightly by manufacturer and Android version. Google Pixel phones include Call Screen, which automatically screens calls from suspected spam numbers and shows you a transcript of voicemails. To use it, go to the Phone app, tap More (the three dots), then Settings, and look for Call Screen. You can block numbers individually by opening the Phone app, finding the number in your call log, pressing and holding it, and selecting "Block."

Samsung phones include Call and SMS filtering. Open the Phone app, tap the menu button, select Settings, then Call Rejection. You can add numbers to a rejection list, or enable automatic rejection of calls from unknown numbers. Some Samsung devices also filter calls based on patterns associated with spam.

All major phone operating systems let you create a "Do Not Disturb" or "Focus Mode" that silences calls and notifications from numbers not in your contacts. This is useful at night or during work hours. You can set exceptions for favorite contacts so important calls still come through.

Practical takeaway: Check your phone's native settings before downloading anything else. Your device likely has call filtering already available—you may just need to turn it on in your settings menu. These tools work by comparing incoming calls to known spam databases and blocking or silencing them based on your preferences.

Third-Party Apps and Carrier Services for Enhanced Protection

If your phone's built-in features don't reduce spam calls enough, many third-party apps and carrier services provide additional filtering. Your phone company often offers spam-blocking tools, either included with your service or available for a monthly fee. Third-party apps use various methods including caller ID databases, machine learning, and community reports to identify spam.

Major wireless carriers have developed their own spam-blocking services. Verizon offers Call Filter, which comes in a free basic version and a premium paid version. The free version identifies suspected spam and scam calls. The paid version adds call blocking and reverse phone lookup capabilities. AT&T offers Call Protect, with similar free and paid tiers. T-Mobile includes Scam Shield as part of many plans. These carrier services integrate directly with your phone's system and typically work before calls even ring your phone.

Popular third-party apps include RoboKiller, Nomorobo, TrueCaller, and Whoscall. RoboKiller uses artificial intelligence to detect spam calls and has a feature called "Answer Bots" that engages robocallers to waste their time. Nomorobo works as a call screening service that blocks known spam numbers before they reach your phone. TrueCaller provides caller identification and spam detection, with a database of billions of phone numbers. Whoscall offers real-time spam detection and reverse phone lookup.

When choosing a third-party app, consider how it works. Some apps screen calls in the cloud before they reach your phone, while others analyze calls on your device. Some collect community data—reports from many users about which numbers are spam—to build their databases. Read the privacy policy carefully, as some apps require access to your contacts and call history to function.

Many of these services offer free versions with basic features and premium subscriptions for advanced options. Free versions might block a certain number of calls daily or provide identification only without blocking. Premium versions typically offer unlimited blocking, advanced filtering options, and priority updates to their spam databases.

Practical takeaway: Your phone company may provide spam blocking at no extra cost—contact them to learn what's available on your account. If you want stronger protection than your phone's built-in tools, research third-party apps by reading recent reviews and checking their privacy policies before installing.

Steps to Block Individual Numbers and Report Spam

Beyond general spam filtering, you can block specific numbers that repeatedly call you. Most phones make this straightforward. You can also report spam to help your phone company and regulatory agencies track scammers and improve filtering for everyone.

To block a number on iPhone, open the Phone app and go to Recents. Find the number you want to block, tap the "i" icon next to it, scroll down, and select "Block this Caller." Alternatively, if someone calls you and you decline the call, you see a "Block" option immediately after. Once blocked, calls from that number go directly to voicemail, and you won't receive notifications. You can see a list of all blocked numbers in Settings > Phone > Blocked Contacts.

On Android devices, the process is similar but varies by manufacturer. In the Phone app, find the number in your call log or contacts, press and hold it, and select "Block" or "Add to block list." Some Android phones let you block unknown callers entirely through the Phone app settings. You can manage your blocked list in Phone > Settings > Blocked Numbers.

Reporting spam calls serves an important purpose. When you report a number, it helps your phone company and app developers identify new spam patterns. The FCC encourages people to report spam calls to their agency. You can file a complaint at fcc.gov/complaint. Provide as much detail as you remember: the number that called, the time it occurred, what the caller claimed, and any action you took.

You can also report spam to the Federal Trade Commission at reportfraud.ftc.gov. The FTC uses these reports to investigate fraud schemes and can take legal action against scammers. If you received a spam call related to a specific company or service, report it directly to that company as well.

Blocking individual numbers is most useful for persistent telemarketers who aren't caught by spam filters. If you block a
