Add a Checked Bag to Your Southwest Flight Guide

Understanding Southwest Airlines Baggage Policies

Southwest Airlines has a baggage policy that differs from many other major U.S. carriers. Unlike airlines such as United or American Airlines, Southwest includes two free checked bags for most passengers. This policy has been in place for many years and represents a significant difference in how the airline handles luggage compared to competitors who typically charge $35 to $50 for the first checked bag.

The two free checked bags apply to each passenger on a ticket, meaning a family of four traveling together would receive eight free checked bags total. Each bag can weigh up to 50 pounds and measure up to 62 inches when you add the length, width, and height together. A bag measuring 22 inches by 14 inches by 9 inches would total 45 inches, which falls within the limit. These dimensions accommodate standard rolling suitcases that most travelers use for week-long trips.

Southwest's policy covers bags that passengers hand to airline staff at the counter or at bag drop locations in the airport. This is different from carry-on bags, which are items passengers bring onto the plane and store in overhead bins or under seats. Understanding this distinction matters because carry-on policies have separate rules.

The free checked bag benefit applies to most ticket types, including basic economy fares. Some airlines charge extra fees for basic economy passengers to check bags, but Southwest does not use this practice. However, certain situations may limit or change bag benefits, which is why reviewing current information directly from Southwest before traveling is important.

Practical Takeaway: Most Southwest passengers receive two free checked bags weighing up to 50 pounds each. Before booking or packing, confirm your specific reservation includes this benefit, as policies can vary based on ticket type or promotional offers.

Step-by-Step Process for Adding a Checked Bag at the Airport

Adding a checked bag at the airport involves a straightforward process that takes only a few minutes. The first step is locating the bag drop area or ticket counter in your airport's departures section. Most airports have clear signage directing passengers to these locations. Southwest typically has dedicated areas near the main ticket counter where passengers without bags can drop off luggage quickly.

When you arrive at the bag drop counter, have your ID and boarding pass ready. You can show either a printed boarding pass or your boarding pass on your phone. Staff will ask for your destination and may verify information in their system. This is a standard security procedure to confirm your flight details match the bag being checked.

Next, place your bag on the scale so staff can verify it meets weight requirements. A standard bathroom scale at home weighs in pounds, and most airport scales display weight clearly. If your bag weighs more than 50 pounds, you may need to remove items or pay an overweight fee, typically $50 to $100 depending on how much excess weight your bag has. For example, a bag weighing 52 pounds would incur an overweight charge, while a 49-pound bag would not.

After weighing, staff will attach a baggage tag to your luggage. This tag contains a barcode and routing information that helps the airline track your bag to your final destination. You should see your flight number and destination airport code on the tag. The bag then moves on a conveyor belt to the sorting area behind the counter.

If you are adding a third or fourth bag beyond the standard two free bags, inform the counter staff before they process your luggage. Additional bags beyond the first two typically cost $35 each for the third and fourth bags, and $50 for any bags beyond that.

Practical Takeaway: Arrive at bag drop with your ID and boarding pass, ensure your bags are within weight limits, and inform staff if you need to check more than two bags so they can calculate any additional fees before processing.

Adding Bags Online or Through the Mobile App Before Your Flight

Southwest offers the option to add bags to your reservation before arriving at the airport through their website or mobile app. This process is particularly useful if you initially booked without checked bags or if you want to confirm your bag allowance before traveling. The airline's website and app are available 24 hours per day, allowing you to manage your reservation at any time.

To add bags through the website, log into your Southwest account using your confirmation number and name, or by connecting through your frequent flyer account if you have one. Once you access your reservation, you should see an option labeled something like "Manage Reservations" or "Trip Details." From this section, you can review your current bag allowance and add additional bags if needed.

When adding bags online, the system will display any associated fees. As mentioned, most passengers receive two free checked bags, so adding a third bag would show a $35 charge. The system accepts major credit cards for payment if fees apply. You will receive a confirmation email with updated reservation details after completing the transaction.

The Southwest mobile app functions similarly to the website. After logging in and selecting your flight, navigate to the baggage section where you can review and modify your bag allowance. Mobile app users often find the process slightly faster since the app is optimized for phones and tablets. Both methods—website and app—update your reservation in real-time, so information is current when you check in at the airport.

One advantage of managing bags online is that you avoid potential lines at the airport and can pay fees in advance. This is particularly helpful during busy travel periods like holidays. If you add bags online and then decide to remove them before your flight, you can typically do so through the same system, though you should verify current policies for refund timelines.

Practical Takeaway: Log into your Southwest reservation on the website or app before traveling to review your bag allowance and add or remove bags if needed, which helps avoid surprises at the airport.

What You Cannot Check and Restricted Items

While Southwest allows two free checked bags for most passengers, not all items can be placed in checked luggage. Understanding prohibited items is important because attempting to check restricted items can delay your travel or result in your bag being removed from the plane.

Hazardous materials represent the largest category of prohibited items. These include aerosol cans like spray paint, cooking spray, or hairspray, which are completely banned from both checked and carry-on bags. Flammable liquids such as gasoline, lighter fluid, and paint thinner cannot be checked. Batteries, particularly lithium batteries used in electronics, have specific restrictions. Spare lithium batteries cannot be checked at all and can only be carried onto the plane in limited quantities.

Firearms present another complex category. If you legally own firearms and want to travel with them, they must be unloaded and declared to Southwest staff before checking your bag. Firearms go in a locked, hard-sided container. Ammunition must be in its original manufacturer's box or a similar secure container. Many passengers do not realize that firearms require this special declaration process, and attempting to check a firearm without proper notification can result in serious legal consequences.

Valuable items should generally not go in checked bags because luggage can be delayed, rerouted, or occasionally mishandled. Items such as jewelry, passports, medication, electronics, and important documents belong in carry-on bags where you maintain control. If a checked bag with valuable items is lost, recovering those items becomes complicated and often unsuccessful.

Liquids and gels have specific restrictions for carry-on bags but are generally permitted in checked luggage without the 3.4-ounce limit that applies to carry-on items. However, they should be properly sealed to prevent spills that could damage other luggage or delay baggage processing. Common examples include shampoo, conditioner, sunscreen, and toothpaste, which can go in checked bags without quantity restrictions.

Practical Takeaway: Pack hazardous materials, firearms, and valuable items according to Southwest's restrictions—keep valuables in carry-on bags, declare any firearms in advance, and avoid packing aerosols and flammable liquids in checked luggage.

Baggage Fees, Exceptions, and Special Circumstances

While most Southwest passengers receive two free checked bags, certain situations involve baggage fees. Understanding these exceptions helps you anticipate costs and avoid unexpected charges at the airport. The most common fee scenario is checking a third or fourth bag, which costs $35 per bag. A fifth bag and any additional bags cost $50 each. For example, if a family checks six bags total, the first two are free, bags three and four cost
