Your Guide to Finding Your Color Season

Understanding Color Seasons: The Basics

Color seasons are a framework used in personal styling and fashion to categorize people based on how their natural coloring interacts with different colors. The concept divides people into four main groups: Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter. Each season has distinct characteristics related to skin undertone, hair color, and eye color. The theory suggests that wearing colors that match your season will make your skin appear brighter, your eyes more vibrant, and your overall appearance more balanced.

The color season system emerged in the 1980s through the work of color theorists and fashion consultants, most notably Bernice Kentner and her followers. The system is based on the principle that human coloring contains warm or cool undertones, and that clear or muted tones are more flattering depending on your natural coloring. When you wear colors aligned with your season, the colors reflect light back onto your face in a way that enhances your natural features rather than competing with them.

Understanding your color season can influence many personal styling decisions. People report that knowing their season helps them shop more confidently, build a more cohesive wardrobe, and feel more comfortable in their clothing choices. The information about color seasons can guide decisions about which jewelry metals suit you, what hair color might be flattering, and which makeup shades work well with your complexion.

The four seasons exist on a spectrum rather than as rigid categories. Some people find they fall between two seasons, and that's normal. The system is meant as a guide for exploration, not a definitive label that limits your choices. Your color season can be a helpful reference point, but personal preference and style should always come first.

Practical Takeaway: Think of color seasons as a starting point for understanding what colors might be most flattering to you, rather than a strict rule about what you must wear. Your season is based on the natural coloring you have right now, which can change if you dye your hair or change your skin tone through tanning.

The Four Color Seasons Explained

Spring people typically have warm undertones, light to medium skin, and clear coloring. Springs often have blonde, light brown, or red hair with golden tones. Their eyes are frequently light blue, green, or warm brown. The word "fresh" describes spring coloring well. Spring colors include warm pastels like peach, warm coral, light golden yellows, cream, and warm greens like sage. Springs look best in colors that are bright and warm rather than dark or muted.

Summer people have cool undertones and often fair to medium skin. Summers typically have ash blonde, light brown, or mousy brown hair, and their eye colors are often blue, gray, or cool-toned green or brown. Summer coloring is soft and gentle, not as bright as Spring. Summer colors include cool pastels like dusty rose, lavender, soft blue, mauve, and cool grays. These colors are lighter and more muted than Winter colors, creating a softer overall impression.

Autumn people have warm undertones, and their coloring is often richer and more saturated than Springs. Autumns typically have warm brown, dark blonde, or red hair with golden or warm undertones. Their eyes are often warm brown, olive, or warm hazel. Autumn colors are warm and earthy: olive green, rust, warm browns, terracotta, warm oranges, and warm golds. These colors are deeper and richer than Spring colors.

Winter people have cool undertones and often have high contrast in their coloring. Winters frequently have black, dark brown, or dark ash brown hair, and often have dark brown, black, or cool-toned eyes. Some Winters have very fair skin with dark hair creating dramatic contrast. Winter colors are bold and cool: true red, deep jewel tones like emerald and sapphire, pure black, pure white, icy pink, and cool purples. These colors are more saturated and dramatic than Summer colors.

Practical Takeaway: Look at your hair, skin, and eyes together as a whole picture. Most people have dominant warm or cool undertones throughout their coloring. Your season describes the overall temperature and clarity of your natural coloring, which helps you understand which colors will harmonize with it.

Determining Your Undertone: The Foundation

Your undertone is the foundation of finding your color season. Undertone refers to the subtle hue beneath your skin's surface. Everyone has an undertone that is either warm, cool, or neutral. Warm undertones contain golden or yellow notes. Cool undertones contain pink, red, or blue notes. Neutral undertones have a balance of warm and cool. Understanding your undertone narrows down which seasons you might belong to, since Springs and Autumns are warm, while Summers and Winters are cool.

One way to assess your undertone is to look at the veins on your wrist. If your veins appear more green or greenish-blue, you likely have warm undertones. If your veins appear more purple or blue, you likely have cool undertones. If your veins appear to be a mix of both colors, you may have neutral undertones. While this method isn't scientifically definitive, many people find it helpful as a starting point. The lighting matters when you do this check—natural daylight gives the most accurate results.

Another method involves looking at how your skin reacts to different metals. Warm undertones typically look better in gold jewelry, while cool undertones typically look better in silver or platinum jewelry. Neutral undertones can wear both equally well. You might notice that one metal brightens your face and makes you look healthier, while the other makes you appear slightly dull or washed out. Some people observe that they look better in rose gold, which combines both warm and cool tones.

Your eye color and hair color also provide clues. Hair colors with golden, warm, or red tones suggest warm undertones, while ash-based or cool-toned hair suggests cool undertones. Similarly, warm browns and golden hazel eyes often indicate warm undertones, while gray, cool blue, and cool green eyes often indicate cool undertones. However, hair and eye color alone don't determine undertone—you need to look at your overall coloring together.

Practical Takeaway: Rather than relying on a single test, use multiple observations about your hair, eyes, skin, and how you look in different metals. Most people have a clear lean toward either warm or cool undertones, which immediately narrows your possible seasons from four to two.

Assessing Depth and Saturation

After determining whether you're warm or cool, the next step involves understanding the depth and saturation of your coloring. Depth refers to whether your coloring is light or dark. Saturation refers to whether your coloring is clear and bright or soft and muted. These qualities help distinguish between the two seasons within your undertone group. For warm undertones, depth and saturation help determine whether you're a Spring or Autumn. For cool undertones, they help determine whether you're a Summer or Winter.

To assess depth, look at your overall coloring in natural daylight. Do your hair, skin, and eyes tend toward lighter shades, or darker shades? Springs and Summers are typically lighter in depth, while Autumns and Winters can be darker. However, depth isn't just about how dark your coloring is—it's about contrast. A Summer with very fair skin and dark hair still has cool undertones that make them a Summer, not a Winter. The clarity and softness of their coloring rather than the darkness determines their season.

Saturation describes how clear or muted your colors are. Springs and Winters have clear, bright, saturated coloring, while Summers and Autumns have softer, more muted coloring. If you have very clear, bright coloring with high contrast between your features, you're likely a Spring (if warm) or Winter (if cool). If your coloring is soft, gentle, and less contrasting, you're likely an Autumn (if warm) or Summer (if cool). One way to observe saturation is to notice whether your features blend together or stand out distinctly from your skin.

Some people use a practical test by holding colors near their face and observing which ones make their skin glow and which ones make it appear dull or tired. Clear, saturated colors typically flatter people with clear coloring, while muted colors typically flatter people with softer coloring. This isn
