Understanding Wall Beds and How They Work

A wall bed, also called a Murphy bed, is a bed that folds up against the wall when not in use. This design lets you turn a bedroom into a living space, office, or storage area during the day. The bed frame is attached to the wall and typically supported by hydraulic pistons or springs that help lower and raise the mattress smoothly.

Wall beds come in several styles. The most common is the vertical wall bed, which folds straight up. Horizontal wall beds fold to the side. Some models include a desk, shelving, or storage cabinets built into the frame. When folded, the bed takes up only 4 to 6 inches of wall space, compared to a traditional bed that requires 3 to 4 feet of floor space.

The mechanics are straightforward. When you pull down on the bed frame or release a latch, the hydraulic pistons slowly lower the mattress to the floor. To put it away, you reverse the process—lift the mattress and guide it into the wall cavity until it locks in place. Quality wall beds are engineered to handle repeated use without wearing out the hydraulic system.

Wall beds work with standard mattresses, though thinner options (8 to 10 inches) are often preferred. A queen-size wall bed is typical, though twin and full sizes are available. Some models accommodate mattresses up to 12 inches thick. The bed frame should support 500 to 1,000 pounds, depending on the brand and model.

Takeaway: Wall beds use wall-mounted frames and hydraulic systems to fold vertically or horizontally, saving 3 to 4 feet of floor space by storing the bed against the wall when not in use. Understanding the basic mechanics helps you choose a model that fits your needs and apartment layout.

Measuring Your Space and Planning Installation

Before buying a wall bed, measure your apartment carefully. You need to determine wall height, width, and what's behind the wall. Wall beds require a minimum ceiling height of 7 feet 6 inches to 8 feet, depending on the model and mattress thickness. If your ceiling is lower, some compact models may still work, but you'll need to verify dimensions with the manufacturer.

Measure the wall where you plan to install the bed. Most wall beds are 54 inches wide for a queen-size model, though this varies. Consider nearby doorways, windows, and furniture. When the bed is down, it typically extends 20 to 24 inches into the room, so ensure you have floor space available. If you have a small studio apartment, you might need to move other furniture temporarily when using the bed.

Check what's inside your walls before installation. Apartment walls often contain electrical wiring, plumbing, and HVAC ducts. Contact your building's maintenance department before drilling. Many apartments require permission for wall modifications. Renters should confirm their lease allows wall beds or check with their landlord first. Some buildings restrict fastening heavy objects to walls due to structural concerns.

Wall studs are essential for installation. Wall beds must be anchored to studs, which are typically spaced 16 inches apart. Most wall beds require anchoring to at least two studs. Use a stud finder (available at hardware stores for $15 to $40) to locate studs before choosing your installation wall. If studs aren't positioned correctly for your wall bed width, you may need to reinforce the wall or choose a different location.

Takeaway: Measure your ceiling height (minimum 7 feet 6 inches), wall width, and floor space needed when the bed is down. Verify permission from your landlord, locate wall studs, and check for electrical wiring or plumbing before installation to avoid costly mistakes.

Types of Wall Beds and What They Cost

Wall beds range in price from approximately $1,000 to $8,000 or more, depending on quality, size, and features. Budget models ($1,000 to $2,000) are usually basic frames with standard hydraulics. Mid-range options ($2,000 to $4,000) offer better materials, smoother operation, and sometimes built-in storage or desk space. High-end models ($4,000 and up) feature premium construction, advanced hydraulic systems, and extensive cabinetry.

Vertical wall beds are the most common type. They fold straight up against the wall and work well in rooms with limited side space. A queen-size vertical wall bed typically costs $1,500 to $4,000 for a basic model. Horizontal or side-folding wall beds are less common but useful if you have limited wall height. These cost similarly but require more floor space when opened.

Wall beds with built-in desks are popular for small apartments that serve as both bedroom and workspace. A queen wall bed with desk storage might cost $2,500 to $5,000. Some models include shelving, cabinetry, or a sofa that connects to the frame. These combo units provide more storage and functionality than standalone beds, making them worthwhile for studio apartments or one-bedroom units.

Installation costs vary based on your apartment's condition. Professional installation typically runs $500 to $1,500, depending on wall preparation, stud location, and local labor rates. Some retailers offer installation services; others charge separately. DIY installation is possible if you're handy with tools, but many manufacturers recommend professional installation to ensure safety and warranty coverage.

Takeaway: Wall beds cost $1,000 to $8,000 depending on size and features, with installation adding $500 to $1,500. Mid-range models ($2,000 to $4,000) offer good quality for most small apartments, while combo units with desks justify higher prices through added functionality.

Real-World Examples: Wall Beds in Small Apartments

A studio apartment in New York City measures 400 square feet. The tenant, a freelance designer, struggled with limited space for both sleeping and working. After installing a queen wall bed with a built-in desk, the apartment transformed. During the day, the bed folds up and the desk is visible, providing a dedicated workspace. At night, the desk disappears into the wall cabinetry, and the bed lowers for sleeping. The tenant saved approximately 3 feet of width and 4 feet of depth in the room's usable floor space.

A one-bedroom apartment in Denver has a second bedroom that doubled as a home office. The homeowner installed a twin wall bed to accommodate overnight guests while maintaining space for a desk and filing cabinets. The twin model cost $1,200 and took 6 hours to install. Guest visits increased because visitors now had a dedicated sleeping area instead of using the sofa. When guests aren't present, the room functions as a full office.

A Chicago apartment dweller with a small bedroom and no separate office installed a wall bed with integrated shelving and storage cubbies. The shelves hold books, decorative items, and daily essentials. The wall unit cost $3,200 but eliminated the need for a separate bookcase and dresser, actually saving space and reducing clutter. The tenant reported that the apartment felt 20% larger after installation.

A couple in a 550-square-foot one-bedroom apartment chose a horizontal wall bed that folds to the side. They positioned it in the bedroom so the bed doesn't swing into the room's center. This allowed them to keep a small reading chair and side table in the bedroom. The horizontal model cost slightly more ($2,800) than a vertical option but better suited their room's layout and usage patterns.

Takeaway: Real apartment dwellers report gaining 60 to 100 square feet of usable floor space, increased functionality for work or guests, and reduced clutter through wall bed installation. Success depends on matching the wall bed type to your room's layout and your lifestyle needs.

Safety, Durability, and Maintenance Considerations

Wall beds are generally safe when properly installed and used correctly. Modern wall beds feature safety mechanisms that prevent the bed from slamming down accidentally. Hydraulic pistons soften the descent, and most models include locks that hold the bed in the up or down position. However, installation quality directly affects safety. Improper anchoring to walls or studs can lead to bed collapse, which poses serious injury risk. Professional installation from qualified contractors reduces this risk significantly.
