Your Free Guide to Updating Computer Drivers Manually

Understanding What Computer Drivers Are and Why They Matter

Computer drivers are small programs that act as translators between your operating system and the hardware components in your computer. Think of a driver as an instruction manual for your printer, graphics card, sound card, or any other piece of hardware. Without drivers, your computer wouldn't know how to communicate with these devices or use their features properly.

Every piece of hardware in your computer needs a driver to function. Your printer needs a driver to receive print jobs from your computer. Your graphics card needs a driver to display images on your monitor. Your keyboard and mouse need drivers to register your keystrokes and mouse movements. Even your network card needs a driver to connect to the internet.

Driver updates are released by manufacturers for several reasons. Sometimes manufacturers release updates to fix bugs that cause devices to malfunction or crash. Other times, they release updates to improve performance or add new features. Security updates are also common—manufacturers may discover vulnerabilities in their drivers and release patches to protect your computer from threats. According to various cybersecurity reports, outdated drivers represent a significant security risk, as they can contain unpatched vulnerabilities that hackers can exploit.

You might notice your computer running slowly, experiencing crashes, or showing error messages related to specific devices. These problems often indicate that a driver needs updating. A printer that won't print, a monitor that won't display the correct resolution, or audio that cuts out frequently can all be solved by updating the appropriate driver.

Practical Takeaway: Take a moment to identify which devices connected to your computer you use most frequently. These devices—whether it's your printer, graphics card, or network adapter—are the ones where driver updates matter most to your daily experience.

Identifying Which Drivers Your Computer Currently Has

Before you can update drivers manually, you need to know what drivers are currently installed on your computer and which ones might need updating. Windows and Mac computers both provide built-in tools that show you information about your hardware and current drivers.

On Windows computers, you can access device information through Device Manager. To open Device Manager, right-click on the Start menu and select "Device Manager" from the menu that appears. You'll see a list of all hardware categories on your computer. Each category can be expanded by clicking the arrow next to its name. For example, if you click the arrow next to "Display adapters," you'll see your graphics card listed. Right-clicking on any device shows options including "Properties," which displays information about that device's current driver version and the manufacturer.

On Mac computers, click the Apple menu and select "About This Mac." Then click "System Report." This shows you information about your Mac's hardware. Navigate to the sections that show information about specific components like graphics cards or network adapters. While Mac computers handle driver updates differently than Windows (since Apple controls most driver updates through macOS updates), you may still need to check for updates from specific hardware manufacturers.

It's helpful to write down or take screenshots of your current driver versions, especially for devices that have been causing problems. Note the manufacturer name and the exact device model. This information becomes important when you search for updated drivers from the manufacturer's website.

You can also check Windows Update to see if your system is up to date. Go to Settings, then "Update & Security," then "Windows Update." Windows Update sometimes installs driver updates automatically, but checking this section shows you what has been installed recently.

Practical Takeaway: Open Device Manager on your Windows computer or System Report on your Mac right now and spend ten minutes exploring the list of devices. Identify the manufacturers of your most important devices—this is the information you'll need when searching for driver updates.

Locating Drivers Directly From Manufacturer Websites

The most reliable way to obtain updated drivers is to visit the official website of the hardware manufacturer. Manufacturer websites typically have a support section where drivers are available for different products and operating system versions. This approach ensures you're getting legitimate, tested drivers directly from the source.

Start by identifying the manufacturer of the device you want to update. For example, if you need to update your graphics card driver, the manufacturer might be Nvidia, AMD, or Intel. If you need to update your printer driver, the manufacturer is the company that made your printer—Canon, HP, Epson, or another brand.

Visit the manufacturer's official website and look for a section labeled "Support," "Drivers," "Downloads," or something similar. These sections usually allow you to search for drivers by entering your specific product model number and your operating system. You'll typically see a dropdown menu where you select your operating system version. For Windows users, knowing whether you have Windows 10 or Windows 11, and whether your system is 32-bit or 64-bit, is important. (To check this on Windows, go to Settings, then "System," then "About" and look for "System type.")

Many manufacturers maintain extensive support pages. For example, Nvidia's website allows you to search for graphics card drivers by entering your specific GPU model and operating system. HP's support website lets you enter your printer model number to find appropriate drivers. These sites often show release notes that explain what problems each driver version fixes.

When you find the appropriate driver, you'll typically see a download button or link. The file you obtain will usually be an executable installer file (.exe for Windows) or a disk image (.dmg for Mac). Some manufacturers provide compressed files (.zip) that you need to extract before installation.

Keep in mind that different versions of Windows require different drivers. A driver written for Windows 10 may not work on Windows 11. Similarly, 64-bit systems require 64-bit drivers, while 32-bit systems require 32-bit drivers. Downloading the wrong version won't harm your computer but will fail to install.

Practical Takeaway: Visit the website of one manufacturer whose products you own—your printer company, graphics card manufacturer, or another device maker. Explore their support section and practice locating drivers for one of your devices without downloading anything yet. This familiarity makes the actual process faster later.

The Step-by-Step Process for Installing Updated Drivers

Once you've obtained the driver file from the manufacturer's website, installing it involves a straightforward process. Most driver installations follow a similar pattern, though the exact steps vary slightly depending on the manufacturer and device type.

First, locate the driver file you've obtained. It will typically be in your Downloads folder. If the file is a compressed archive (.zip file), extract it first by right-clicking on it and selecting "Extract All" on Windows. Look for a file with a name like "setup.exe" or similar—this is the installer program.

Before you begin installation, close any programs that use the device you're updating. For example, if you're updating a graphics card driver, close any games or graphics-heavy applications. If you're updating a printer driver, close any open documents and exit your word processor. This prevents conflicts during installation.

Double-click the installer file to start the installation process. The installer will typically show a welcome screen with information about what's being installed. Read this screen to confirm you're installing the correct driver for your device. Click "Next" or the equivalent button to proceed. Some installers will show you license agreements—read these if you wish, then accept them to continue.

The installer will guide you through the installation process with a series of screens. Most of these will be straightforward—you're typically just confirming the installation location and clicking "Next" repeatedly. Some installers show options for what components to install. Unless you have a specific reason to deselect components, keep the default selections checked.

The actual installation process may take several minutes. You'll see a progress bar indicating that files are being copied to your computer. Some drivers require your computer to restart after installation. When prompted, save any open work and allow the computer to restart. The restart ensures that the new driver fully integrates with your system.

After installation completes, restart your computer completely (don't just let it sleep or hibernate). Once your computer has restarted, open Device Manager again to verify that the new driver version has been installed. Right-click on the device you updated and select "Properties" to see the new driver version number.

Practical Takeaway: Before you install any driver, take a screenshot of the old driver version information from Device Manager. After installation and restart, take another screenshot showing the new version. This documentation helps you verify that the update was successful.
