What TSA PreCheck Is and How It Works

TSA PreCheck is a Department of Homeland Security program that lets certain travelers move through airport security checkpoints faster. The program started in 2011 and has grown significantly over the past decade. As of 2024, more than 12 million people have enrolled in TSA PreCheck.

When you participate in TSA PreCheck, you receive a Known Traveler Number (KTN) that you enter when booking flights. At the airport, you go through a separate, shorter security line. The screening process is less rigorous than standard security. You can keep shoes, belts, and light jackets on. Laptops and liquids can stay in your carry-on bag. Metal buckles and small metal items do not require removal.

The program works because TSA officers have already conducted a background check on you before you ever reach the airport. This pre-screening reduces the need for extensive questioning and searching at the checkpoint. The average TSA PreCheck line takes about five minutes, compared to 20-30 minutes for standard security lines during busy travel times.

TSA PreCheck operates at more than 200 U.S. airports. Major hubs like Atlanta, Dallas, Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York all participate. Some smaller regional airports offer it as well. The program also works on many international flights departing from U.S. airports.

Practical Takeaway: Understanding the basic mechanics of TSA PreCheck helps you decide if the program fits your travel patterns. If you fly more than once a year, the time and stress savings may matter to your travel experience.

The Cost and Duration of TSA PreCheck Membership

TSA PreCheck membership costs $78-$85 for a five-year term, depending on how you pay. If you pay through the TSA website, the fee is $78. Some approved enrollment centers charge up to $85, though most charge the standard amount. This breaks down to roughly $15-$17 per year, or about $1.25-$1.40 per month.

A five-year membership means you need to renew every five years. You can renew online or in person. The renewal process typically costs the same as the initial membership. Some people renew in their fifth year to avoid any gap in coverage, though you can use your membership until the exact expiration date.

The cost calculation depends on your flying habits. Frequent business travelers who fly 20+ times per year often find TSA PreCheck pays for itself in time savings alone. Someone who flies 2-3 times per year may value the convenience differently. A person who flies once every five years might not feel the membership is worthwhile.

TSA PreCheck has no hidden fees once you pay the membership. There are no per-flight charges or additional costs to use the program. However, the program does not cover international flights originating outside the United States or connecting through foreign airports before reaching the U.S.

Some credit card companies offer statement credits or reimbursement for TSA PreCheck fees. American Express, Chase Sapphire Reserve, and several other premium credit cards provide this benefit. Check with your card issuer to see if you have this coverage.

Practical Takeaway: Calculate your annual flight frequency and multiply it by the estimated time savings (about 10-15 minutes per airport visit). If you fly at least twice yearly, the cost usually becomes practical within a few years.

How to Get Your Known Traveler Number

To obtain a TSA PreCheck KTN, you must first complete an enrollment process. This involves providing personal information, undergoing a background check, and getting fingerprinted and photographed. The entire process typically takes 4-6 weeks from start to finish, though it can sometimes take longer.

You have two main pathways to enrollment. The first is through the official TSA PreCheck enrollment website, where you create an account and schedule an appointment at a TSA enrollment center near you. The second is through certain private companies approved by TSA, such as Idemia, Clear, or various airport-specific enrollment centers.

During your enrollment appointment, a TSA officer or approved representative will verify your identity using documents like a passport, driver's license, or state ID. They will collect your fingerprints using digital scanning technology. A photograph is taken for your membership card. The entire appointment usually takes about 10-15 minutes.

The background check that follows is more thorough than you might expect. TSA checks multiple databases including criminal records, immigration records, terrorism watch lists, and financial records. The agency looks for disqualifying factors such as criminal convictions, immigration violations, or security concerns. Most people pass this check without issue.

Once approved, you receive a TSA PreCheck card in the mail within 1-2 weeks. The card displays your KTN, which is the key piece of information you need. When booking flights online, you enter this KTN in the "Known Traveler Number" field during reservation. Some airlines also let you add the KTN to your frequent flyer profile.

Practical Takeaway: Start the enrollment process at least 2-3 months before a planned trip if you're a new applicant. This timing ensures you receive your KTN before your travel dates and can immediately use the benefit.

Understanding Touchless ID Technology at Airports

Touchless ID technology is an emerging security method that uses facial recognition, iris scanning, or other biometric data instead of requiring passengers to present physical documents. Several U.S. airports are testing and implementing these systems. The technology aims to speed up security screening, reduce contact between travelers and staff, and create a more seamless travel experience.

Facial recognition is the most common touchless technology being deployed. Systems like the CBP's Biometric Entry-Exit program at major airports scan your face as you approach a checkpoint or boarding gate. The system compares your face to your passport photo or other government ID images in a database. The entire process takes a few seconds and requires no physical contact with documents or personnel.

As of 2024, touchless ID systems operate at several major U.S. airports including Atlanta, Dallas-Fort Worth, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and others. The Customs and Border Protection agency operates many of these systems for international travelers. Domestic TSA checkpoints are beginning to integrate facial recognition as well, though more slowly than international systems.

The technology does have some limitations. It works best when you're not wearing heavy makeup, large sunglasses, or masks. Significant changes to your appearance since your ID photo was taken can cause verification problems. The systems are still being refined to reduce "false rejection" rates, where the system fails to recognize a legitimate traveler.

Privacy concerns about facial recognition have led some travelers to ask about opt-out procedures. Most airports allow you to decline touchless scanning and provide a traditional document-check alternative, though this may take longer. The collected images are typically stored temporarily and deleted within specified timeframes, though policies vary by agency and location.

Practical Takeaway: When traveling through airports implementing touchless ID, check the airport's website beforehand to understand how the system works at your specific terminal. Bring a backup ID even if facial recognition is available, and allow extra time if you prefer traditional document verification.

How TSA PreCheck and Touchless Technology Interact

TSA PreCheck and touchless ID technology serve different purposes but increasingly work together at U.S. airports. TSA PreCheck focuses on expediting security screening by allowing pre-vetted travelers to use a faster line and reduced scanning procedures. Touchless ID technology focuses on replacing physical document checks with biometric verification.

Some airports are combining these approaches. You might use your TSA PreCheck KTN to enter an expedited lane, then proceed through a touchless facial recognition system instead of manually showing your boarding pass and ID. This creates a seamless flow where you walk through security with minimal stops.

However, touchless technology is not yet standard at all TSA PreCheck locations. Some airports with TSA PreCheck lanes do not yet have facial recognition systems. Conversely, some airports with facial recognition systems may not yet have TSA PreCheck programs. The rollout is happening in phases across different airports.

For travelers, this means your experience varies by airport. At a major hub like Atlanta or Dallas, you might enjoy both benefits simultaneously. At a smaller regional airport,
