Your Free Guide to Replacing Laminate Countertops

Understanding Laminate Countertop Materials and When Replacement Makes Sense

Laminate countertops have been a popular choice in kitchens and bathrooms since the 1950s. They consist of multiple layers: a particleboard or plywood base, a layer of adhesive, and a printed decorative layer topped with a protective plastic coating. This construction makes them lightweight and affordable compared to granite, marble, or solid surface options. Laminate countertops typically cost between $10 to $40 per square foot for materials alone, while natural stone alternatives can run $50 to $200 per square foot or more.

Laminate countertops generally last 10 to 20 years with proper care, though this varies based on usage patterns and maintenance. Common signs that replacement may be worth considering include water damage visible as swelling or discoloration along edges, peeling or separation of the decorative layer from the base, deep scratches or gouges that expose the particle board underneath, or staining that won't come clean with normal washing. The decision to replace depends on how much of the countertop is damaged and whether repairs would cost significantly less than replacement.

Before deciding on replacement, evaluate the overall condition of your kitchen or bathroom. If your cabinets are solid, plumbing is in good shape, and the layout works well, replacing just the countertops can give a space a fresh appearance without the expense of a full remodel. According to the National Kitchen and Bath Association, countertop replacement represents about 15% to 25% of a typical kitchen update budget. Understanding what's underneath your current countertops and measuring accurately will help you prepare for the replacement process.

Practical takeaway: Document your current countertop's condition with photos. Measure the total square footage by multiplying length times width of each section. Check whether water damage extends to the cabinets below, which would affect your repair versus replacement decision.

Tools and Materials You'll Need for the Job

Replacing laminate countertops requires specific tools and materials to work safely and effectively. Most of these items can be rented or borrowed if you don't own them, which can reduce project costs. A reciprocating saw or circular saw with a carbide blade works well for cutting through laminate and particle board. A pry bar or crowbar helps remove the old countertops without damaging the cabinets. You'll also need a caulking gun, adjustable wrench, screwdrivers (both Phillips and flathead), a level, measuring tape, and a jigsaw for cutting sink openings or curved edges.

Safety equipment is essential when working with laminate and sawing materials. Wear safety glasses to protect your eyes from dust and debris. A dust mask or respirator prevents inhalation of particulates, which is especially important when cutting particle board. Work gloves protect your hands from sharp edges and rough materials. Hearing protection is recommended if you'll be using power tools for extended periods.

For new countertops, you'll need the laminate sheets themselves (typically 0.84 inches thick for standard applications), contact cement or construction adhesive, wood edging or metal trim for exposed edges, silicone caulk in a color matching your countertop, and shims if your cabinets aren't perfectly level. Many suppliers offer laminate in sheets of 4 feet by 8 feet or 4 feet by 12 feet, though they can cut them to size. Purchase about 10% to 15% extra material to account for cutting errors and waste.

Additional items include a belt sander or orbital sander for smoothing edges, a router or edge banding tool for finishing edges, and metal or plastic backsplash trim if you plan to install one. For sink cutouts, hole saws in various sizes or a jigsaw with a metal-cutting blade will be necessary. If you're installing a new undermount sink, you may need additional brackets or support structures depending on your sink type.

Practical takeaway: Create a checklist of tools you own versus those you need to rent or borrow. Call your local tool rental shop for pricing—renting a reciprocating saw typically costs $20 to $30 per day. Visit a home improvement store to see laminate samples in person and order materials at least one week before starting work.

Step-by-Step Process for Removing Old Laminate Countertops

Removing old countertops requires patience and careful technique to avoid damaging the cabinets beneath them. Start by turning off and disconnecting the plumbing to your sink if one is installed. If your sink is undermount (attached from below), remove the mounting brackets first. For drop-in or self-rimming sinks, disconnect the drain and supply lines, then carefully lift out the sink. You may need a helper for this step, as sinks can be heavy and awkward to maneuver.

Once the sink is out, inspect the countertop edges for any screws or brackets attaching it to the cabinets. These fasteners often run along the underside of the countertop. Use an adjustable wrench or screwdriver to remove them. If the countertop is glued to the cabinets—common in many installations—you'll need to work a pry bar underneath to separate it. Work from one corner, applying steady pressure to break the adhesive bond. Avoid sudden jerking motions, which could crack the cabinet frames or pull them apart.

Using a reciprocating saw, carefully cut the countertop into manageable sections, typically 2 to 3 feet wide. This makes removal easier and safer. Wear your dust mask during this step, as cutting particle board creates significant dust. After sectioning, continue prying and lifting the pieces away from the cabinets. Use shims to support and protect the cabinet edges as you work. Once the main countertop is removed, scrape away dried adhesive using a paint scraper or putty knife, working carefully not to gouge the cabinet surface.

Examine the cabinet tops once the old countertop is gone. If they're damaged, stained, or uneven, this is an opportunity to repair them before installing new countertops. Sand down high spots, fill gouges with wood filler, and allow everything to dry completely. Check that the cabinets are level using a 4-foot level. Cabinets that aren't level will cause the new countertop to sit unevenly, creating an unprofessional appearance and potential problems with water drainage toward the backsplash.

Practical takeaway: Take photos before removing the sink to remember how supply lines and drain connections were arranged. Once old countertops are removed, place a damp cloth over cabinet tops to prevent dust from settling everywhere. Plan to spend 4 to 6 hours on removal and preparation, depending on your kitchen's size and complexity.

Installing New Laminate Countertops: Preparation and Layout

Proper preparation determines whether your new countertops will fit correctly and function well. Begin by taking precise measurements of each section. Measure the length of the cabinets at the wall and at the front edge, then measure the depth. Countertops are typically 24 to 25 inches deep to allow for backsplashes and wall-mounted cabinets. Note any obstacles like windows, doors, or appliances that might affect layout. Sketch your kitchen layout on paper, marking these measurements and noting where seams between laminate sheets will fall.

When planning seams, position them in less visible areas when possible, such as behind appliances or at corners. Seams in front of windows or in the middle of work areas are more noticeable. Most fabrication shops can create and seal laminate sections before delivery, which produces cleaner, more waterproof seams than field-glued joints. However, if you're working with pre-cut sheets, mark seam locations clearly on the laminate surface using a pencil on the underside.

Decide on edge treatments before installation. Options include self-edge (laminate wrapped around the edge), metal trim (aluminum or stainless steel strips that are both decorative and protective), or wood edge banding (typically matching hardwood). Self-edges and metal trim work well for DIY installations because they're forgiving of minor imperfections. Wood edges require more precision and finishing work but offer a more traditional appearance.

If you need to cut a sink opening in the laminate, mark its location carefully on the underside of the material before adhesive is applied. Measure from the finished cabinet edges where the sink will mount. Use a template that comes with your sink
