Your Free Guide to Installing Google's Gemini CLI Tool

What Is Google's Gemini CLI Tool and Why You Might Want It

Google's Gemini CLI (Command Line Interface) tool is a text-based program that lets you interact with Google's Gemini artificial intelligence directly from your computer's terminal or command prompt. Instead of visiting a website, you type commands to ask Gemini questions, request information, or have it help with writing and coding tasks. The CLI tool works on Windows, Mac, and Linux computers.

The Gemini CLI tool connects to Google's Gemini AI model, which is trained on vast amounts of text data and can understand and respond to a wide range of requests. According to Google's announcements, Gemini can process and respond to text prompts, making it useful for developers, writers, students, and anyone who works regularly in a command-line environment. The tool is particularly popular among software developers who want to integrate AI capabilities into their workflows without leaving their development environment.

Unlike web-based versions of Gemini, the CLI version allows you to work faster if you already spend time in a terminal. You can pipe data into it, automate tasks with scripts, and integrate it into existing workflows. For example, a programmer might use Gemini CLI to generate code snippets, debug problems, or write documentation without switching between different applications.

Google has made this tool available to anyone with a Google account and internet connection. There is no cost associated with the tool itself, though Google maintains certain usage policies and may have rate limits for how frequently you can use it. Understanding what this tool does before installation helps you decide whether it fits your needs.

Practical Takeaway: The Gemini CLI tool is a free program that brings AI capabilities to your computer's command line. Consider whether you spend significant time in a terminal—if you do, this tool might streamline your workflow.

System Requirements and Compatibility Across Operating Systems

Before installing Google's Gemini CLI tool, your computer must meet certain basic requirements. These requirements are straightforward and cover most modern computers in use today. Understanding your system's specifications helps you determine if installation will work on your device.

For Windows users, you need Windows 10 or later running on either 64-bit or 32-bit architecture. Your computer should have at least 200 MB of free disk space for the tool and its supporting files. Windows 11 users will have no compatibility issues. The tool works with any Windows command prompt, PowerShell, or third-party terminal applications like Windows Terminal.

Mac users need macOS 10.13 (High Sierra) or later. Both Intel-based and Apple Silicon Macs (M1, M2, M3 chips) are supported. You'll need about 200 MB of available storage space. The tool integrates with the default Terminal application or alternatives like iTerm2. Mac users should note that the installation process differs slightly from Windows due to file permission handling on Unix-based systems.

Linux users have broad compatibility across distributions including Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, CentOS, and Arch Linux. The tool requires glibc version 2.17 or higher, which is standard on nearly all modern Linux distributions released after 2012. You need approximately 200 MB of free disk space and internet access during installation to retrieve necessary components.

All operating systems require an active internet connection for both installation and operation. The tool itself is relatively lightweight—even older computers with modest specifications can run it without performance problems. You also need a valid Google account to authenticate with the tool once installed, though you do not need a paid Google account or subscription.

Practical Takeaway: Check that your device runs Windows 10+, macOS 10.13+, or a modern Linux distribution. If your computer meets these specifications, you have the basic requirements for installation.

First, visit Google's official documentation page for the Gemini CLI tool. You can find this by searching "Google Gemini CLI installation" in any web browser. Look for the link from google.dev or a similar official Google domain. Do not use installation files from unofficial websites, as these may contain errors or unwanted software. Google's official site will have a button or link labeled something like "Installation Guide" or "Get Started."

On the installation page, locate the Windows section. Google provides a direct link to a Windows installer file (typically with a .exe extension). Click this link to start the file transfer. Your browser will ask where you want to save the file—choose your Downloads folder or Desktop for easy access. The file is usually between 50-100 MB in size, so it may take 30 seconds to 2 minutes to transfer depending on your internet speed.

Once the file finishes transferring, double-click it to open the installer. Windows may show a security prompt asking if you want to run this program. Click "Yes" to proceed. The installer will open a window showing the installation location (usually something like "C:\Program Files\Google\Gemini"). Leave this location unchanged unless you have a specific reason to modify it. Click the "Install" button and wait while the program copies files to your computer. This typically takes 1-3 minutes.

After installation finishes, the installer will show a completion message. Close this window. To verify successful installation, open Command Prompt by pressing Windows Key + R, typing "cmd", and pressing Enter. Type the command "gemini --version" and press Enter. If installation worked correctly, you'll see a version number displayed. If you see an error message, the installation did not complete properly and you may need to restart your computer and try again.

Practical Takeaway: Download the official Windows installer from Google's site, run it, and verify installation by typing "gemini --version" in Command Prompt.

Installation Process for Mac and Linux Users

Mac and Linux users follow a different installation path than Windows users because these operating systems handle software installation differently. The process is still straightforward but requires use of the Terminal application.

Mac users should open the Terminal application. You can find it by clicking the Spotlight icon (magnifying glass) in the top-right corner, typing "terminal", and pressing Enter. Google provides installation instructions specifically for Mac users on their official documentation page. The most common method involves using Homebrew, which is a package manager that simplifies software installation on Mac. If you already use Homebrew, you can simply type "brew install google-gemini-cli" and press Enter. Homebrew will automatically retrieve and install the tool.

If you don't have Homebrew installed, you can still install the Gemini CLI tool using an alternative method. Google's documentation page provides a direct download link for Mac. After transferring the file, you'll need to make it executable by opening Terminal and typing "chmod +x ~/Downloads/gemini-cli-macos" (adjusting the filename if necessary) and pressing Enter. Then type "~/Downloads/gemini-cli-macos" to run the installer. Follow any prompts that appear on screen.

Linux users typically install Gemini CLI using their distribution's package manager or by directly transferring a binary file. For Ubuntu and Debian systems, instructions are often provided for using apt or similar tools. Open Terminal and type the command exactly as shown in Google's documentation for your specific Linux distribution. For other distributions like Fedora or Arch, Google maintains distribution-specific instructions that show the appropriate command for your system's package manager.

After installation on Mac or Linux, verify that the installation worked by opening Terminal and typing "gemini --version", then pressing Enter. You should see a version number displayed. If instead you see a message like "command not found", the installation did not complete correctly. In that case, restart your computer and try the installation steps again, making sure you typed each command exactly as shown in Google's documentation.

Both Mac and Linux installations typically take 2-5 minutes from start to finish. The tool occupies roughly 100-150 MB of disk space on both operating systems. After successful installation, you can begin the authentication process described in the following section.

Practical Takeaway: Mac users can use Homebrew with "brew install google-gemini-cli", while Linux users should follow their distribution-specific instructions from Google's documentation. Verify installation by typing "gemini --
