Your Free Guide to Finding BLS Certification Records

Understanding BLS Certification and Why Records Matter

Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is a credential that shows you have completed training in emergency life-saving techniques. The American Heart Association and the Red Cross are the two main organizations that issue BLS certifications in the United States. When you complete a BLS course, you receive a card showing you have met the standards for performing CPR, using an automated external defibrillator (AED), and providing relief for choking in adults, children, and infants.

BLS certification records are official documents that prove when you completed your training and when your certification expires. Many employers require employees to maintain current BLS certification. Healthcare workers, childcare providers, lifeguards, personal trainers, and many others need this credential for their jobs. Schools and community organizations may also ask volunteers to have BLS certification before working with children or vulnerable populations.

Your certification record serves as proof that you completed the required training and passed the skills assessment. Employers often ask to see your card or verification of certification before hiring you or allowing you to continue working. Some positions require you to show proof before your first day of work. Understanding what your records contain and where to find them is important for maintaining your professional standing and meeting job requirements.

Losing your physical BLS card or not knowing where your records are kept can create problems when you need to show proof of certification. This is especially problematic if you need to start a new job quickly or renew your position. Knowing how to locate your records means you can provide documentation promptly whenever an employer requests it.

Practical Takeaway: Keep track of where your BLS certification records are stored and note your expiration date. Set a reminder several months before expiration so you can renew your certification before it lapses.

Locating Records Through the American Heart Association

The American Heart Association (AHA) is one of the two largest providers of BLS certification in the United States. If you took your BLS course through an AHA-authorized training center, your records should be available through their system. The AHA maintains a database of certified individuals, though the process for finding your records differs depending on when you took your course and which type of AHA course you completed.

To search for your AHA BLS records, you can visit the American Heart Association's official website and look for their verification or certificate lookup tool. You will typically need to provide information such as your name, date of birth, and the approximate date when you completed your training. The system may also ask for your certificate number if you have it available. This information allows their database to locate your record and confirm your current certification status.

If you took your course through an AHA training center, that center may also maintain copies of your records. You can contact the specific training center where you completed your course directly. Many hospitals, colleges, fire departments, and private training companies serve as AHA training centers. They can often print duplicate certificates or provide written verification of your certification status. This can be useful if you need documentation quickly and don't want to wait for an official AHA lookup.

The AHA's verification system has been updated over the years, and older records may be archived differently than newer ones. If you completed your BLS certification more than five to ten years ago, the organization may not have digital records readily available. In these cases, contacting your original training center remains your best option for retrieving old documentation.

Practical Takeaway: Save your AHA certificate number and the date of completion somewhere safe, like a photo on your phone or a document on your computer. This information makes it much faster to retrieve records if needed.

Finding Records Through the Red Cross

The Red Cross is the other major organization that issues BLS certifications across the United States. If you completed your BLS training through a Red Cross-authorized instructor or training site, your records are maintained in the Red Cross system. The Red Cross handles record verification differently than the American Heart Association, so knowing how their system works is important for retrieving your information.

The Red Cross offers an online certificate verification system on their official website. You can search their database by providing your full name and date of birth. The system will show whether you have an active BLS certification and when it expires. This is the quickest way to verify that your certification is current and to get documentation of your status. The Red Cross system also allows you to view your certificate online, which you can print or save as needed.

If you cannot find your records through the Red Cross online verification tool, you can contact the Red Cross directly through their website or by phone. The Red Cross maintains records for several years, so even if your certification has expired, they may still have your training information on file. Providing your name, date of birth, and approximate training date will help them locate your specific records. They can confirm whether you completed training with them and what your certification status was or is.

Some Red Cross courses and certifications are offered through specific training partners, including hospitals, schools, and community organizations. If you took your course through one of these organizations, you might also contact them directly. Many of these training sites keep copies of certification records for their participants. They can provide verification or duplicate certificates more quickly than going through the national Red Cross system.

Practical Takeaway: Visit the Red Cross website and bookmark their certificate verification page. This makes it easy to check your status anytime without having to search for the link again.

What Information You'll Need to Search for Your Records

Having the right information ready before you search for your BLS records will make the process faster and more successful. Both the American Heart Association and the Red Cross require certain pieces of information to locate your certification in their databases. Knowing what to prepare ahead of time prevents delays and frustration.

The most essential pieces of information are your full legal name and your date of birth. These two items alone can often be enough for a search to succeed. However, providing additional details increases the chances of finding your records quickly. If you have your certificate number, that is the single most helpful piece of information. The certificate number is printed on your physical BLS card and is a unique identifier assigned to your specific certification.

The approximate date when you completed your BLS training is also very useful. If you remember the month and year of your course, include this information in your search. You should also note which organization issued your certification—American Heart Association or Red Cross—since they maintain separate databases. If you remember the name of the training center or instructor, that can help as well.

If you have your physical BLS card, gather it before starting your search. Your card contains your certificate number, expiration date, and the name of the certifying organization. Having this card in hand makes the process much simpler and faster. If you have lost your card, don't worry—the information from the issuing organization's database can serve as official proof of your certification status.

Some people may also have confirmation emails from their training or receipts from their courses. These documents often include your certificate number or training dates. Checking your email archives or filing systems before searching can provide helpful details. Even if you only remember partial information, most database systems can still locate your records using what you do remember.

Practical Takeaway: Create a simple document or note in your phone with your BLS certificate number, expiration date, and which organization issued your certification. Store this where you can find it easily when you need it.

Understanding Expiration Dates and Renewal Requirements

BLS certifications are not permanent. They expire after a certain period of time, and the timing depends on which type of course you completed and which organization issued your certification. Understanding when your certification expires and what renewal means is important for maintaining your credentials and staying compliant with job requirements.

Most BLS certifications issued by the American Heart Association are valid for two years from the date you complete the course. The Red Cross also typically issues certifications that last for two years. This two-year period gives you time to continue working in your field or maintain your certification for volunteer positions. However, this timeline means you need to plan ahead for renewal before your certification lapses.

Your BLS card will have an expiration date clearly printed on it. This date tells you the last day your certification is considered current and valid. Some employers will not accept proof of certification if the expiration date has passed, even if you have the original card. It's important to check this date regularly, especially as you approach the end of your certification period.

Renewing your BLS certification typically requires taking another course. For AHA certifications, you may be able to
