Your Free Guide to Checking Your Social Security Account

Understanding Your Social Security Account and Why It Matters

Your Social Security account is one of the most important financial records you have. It tracks your work history, the taxes you've paid into the system, and calculates the benefit amount you may receive when you retire or become unable to work. The Social Security Administration (SSA) maintains records for over 330 million people in the United States, and errors in your account can affect your future income.

Many people don't realize they can view their own account information without paying anyone or using a third-party service. The SSA provides this information directly to workers at no cost. According to the SSA's 2023 annual report, approximately 67 million people receive Social Security benefits each month, yet many working Americans have never checked their account records.

Your Social Security record shows several key pieces of information: your reported earnings for each year you worked, the total amount of Social Security taxes (called FICA taxes) you've paid, an estimate of your future benefits if you continue working until different retirement ages, and your work credits. Work credits are how Social Security tracks your work history. You earn up to four credits per year, and you generally need 40 credits (about 10 years of work) to become eligible for retirement benefits.

Checking your account regularly helps you catch errors before they become problems. Wage reporting mistakes, name changes that weren't properly recorded, or employment records that didn't get credited to your account can all affect your benefits. The sooner you discover and correct these issues, the better.

Takeaway: Schedule time to review your Social Security account at least once per year. This simple step takes about 15 minutes and can prevent costly mistakes.

How to Create Your My Social Security Account Online

The SSA operates a secure online portal called "my Social Security" at ssa.gov. This is the official government website where you can view your account information from anywhere with an internet connection. Creating an account is free and requires only basic information that you already know.

To set up your account, you'll need your Social Security number, a valid email address, and a way to verify your identity. The SSA uses identity verification to prevent fraud and protect your personal information. You'll be asked to answer security questions based on information in your credit file—these are questions only you should know the answer to, such as details about loans or credit accounts you've had in the past.

Here's the basic process: First, go to ssa.gov/myaccount and select "Create an account." You'll enter your Social Security number and email address. The system will then ask you to verify your identity by answering multiple-choice questions about your credit history. This usually takes 2-3 minutes. Once you answer these questions correctly, your account is created immediately.

If you don't have a credit history or the identity verification doesn't work, you have another option. You can verify your identity in person at a local Social Security field office. Bring your original birth certificate or passport, a state-issued ID, and proof of residency (such as a recent utility bill). The SSA staff will verify your information and activate your online account on the spot.

If you already have accounts with other government websites like IRS.gov or Veterans.gov, you may be able to link those to your Social Security account for easier access. This is called credential federation, and it means you can use your existing login information to access my Social Security.

Takeaway: Set aside 15 minutes to create your account. Have your Social Security number ready, and if you can't verify online, visit your local Social Security office—staff can help you set up your account the same day.

What Information You Can View in Your Account

Once you're logged into my Social Security, you can see a detailed record of your work history and earnings. The site displays your reported earnings for each year since you started working, going back to 1951 if applicable. This earnings history is crucial because Social Security calculates your benefit amount based on your highest-earning years. For people retiring at the standard retirement age (which is between 66 and 67 for most people born after 1954), the system typically uses your 35 highest-earning years.

Your account also shows your Social Security Statement, which is a one-page document that includes three benefit estimates. These estimates show what you might receive if you claim benefits at age 62 (the earliest age possible), at your full retirement age, or at age 70 (the latest age to start claiming without losing benefits). These are estimates only based on current earnings and don't represent a promise or guarantee of future benefits. The amounts will change if you earn more in the future or if Congress makes changes to Social Security law.

You can also see your work credit information. This shows how many credits you've earned and when. As mentioned earlier, you need 40 total credits to become eligible for retirement benefits. The system displays your progress clearly, so you can see whether you've met this requirement or how many more years you need to work to reach it.

The account provides a record of any benefits you're currently receiving, if applicable. If you're already collecting Social Security retirement, disability, or survivor benefits, you can see your current monthly benefit amount and your payment schedule. You can also view information about any family members who might be receiving benefits based on your work record, such as a spouse or minor child.

Additionally, your online account lets you view your Medicare information if you're enrolled in Original Medicare. This includes your enrollment date and your coverage parts. You cannot view information about children or other family members—each person must access their own account with their own login.

Takeaway: Review your reported earnings carefully. If you notice years where you know you worked but earnings aren't shown, or amounts seem incorrect, write down those years so you can report them to the SSA.

How to Spot Errors in Your Earnings Record

Errors in your Social Security earnings record are more common than most people realize. Employers sometimes report wages incorrectly, maiden names might not have been updated when you married, or Social Security numbers might have been transposed during data entry. According to the Social Security Administration, they process millions of wage records each year, and mistakes can happen at any stage. The longer an error sits uncorrected, the more difficult it becomes to fix.

When reviewing your account, compare your Social Security records to your personal tax returns and W-2 forms from previous years. Your W-2 forms show exactly what your employer reported to the IRS for each year. This is the source document for your Social Security earnings record, so it should match. Look for several types of errors: missing years of work, amounts that are significantly lower or higher than you remember, work that was reported under a different name or Social Security number, or years that should show earnings but show zero.

Pay special attention if you changed your name during your working years. If you got married or divorced and didn't immediately notify Social Security, some of your earnings might be recorded under your maiden name or former name. The SSA system should link all these name variations to one person, but sometimes the connection isn't complete. This can make it look like you didn't work certain years when you actually did.

If you were self-employed, verify that your self-employment income appears in your record. Self-employed workers pay Social Security taxes through their tax returns rather than through employers, so these earnings should still appear in your Social Security account. However, if you filed late or amended a return, the earnings might not have been posted to Social Security yet.

Document any errors you find. Write down the year, what your record shows, what your W-2 or tax return shows, and any other relevant details. The SSA will need this information to investigate and correct the error. Keep copies of your W-2 forms or tax returns that support your claim, going back at least seven years.

Takeaway: Set aside your W-2 forms or tax returns and compare them to your Social Security earnings record, year by year. This 30-minute task now can prevent much bigger problems later.

How to Report Errors and Get Them Corrected

If you discover errors in your Social Security account, you need to report them to the SSA as soon as possible. The sooner you report an error, the sooner the SSA can investigate and correct it. Errors that happened decades ago are harder to fix because the original employer records may no longer exist, but the SSA will still work to correct them if you provide documentation.
