Asurion's AT&T plans generally fall into a few categories based on the level of coverage. Standard plans usually cover accidental damage, such as drops, cracks, and water damage. Some plans also include coverage for theft and loss, though these typically come with higher monthly fees. Plans may vary depending on your device type, whether you have an older phone or a newer model, and when you enrolled in protection.

The monthly cost for AT&T phone protection through Asurion typically ranges from $8 to $15 per month, depending on your device and coverage level. When damage occurs, you would generally pay a deductible to receive repair or replacement service. Deductibles can range from $29 to $299 depending on your device and the type of damage, with higher-value phones typically having higher deductibles.

One important aspect of these plans is that they are optional add-ons to your AT&T service. If you enrolled in protection when you got your phone, you should have documentation showing your plan details and monthly cost. You can check your current coverage by logging into your AT&T account online or calling AT&T customer service to confirm what protection level you have, if any.

Practical Takeaway: Review your AT&T bill to confirm whether you currently have Asurion protection and what your coverage level includes. Write down your plan details and deductible amount, as you will need this information if you need to file a claim.

Common Types of Damage Covered Under Asurion Plans

Asurion AT&T protection plans typically cover several categories of phone damage. Accidental damage is the most common type of coverage and includes incidents like dropping your phone, cracking the screen, or damaging the charging port. If you accidentally spill liquid on your phone or drop it in water, water damage coverage usually applies, though the phone must be dried and inspected by a technician before a determination is made about repair versus replacement.

Screen damage represents one of the most frequent claims filed under these plans. A cracked or shattered screen can cost $150 to $400 to repair or replace out of pocket, depending on the phone model. With Asurion coverage, you would typically pay only your deductible, which is usually $29 to $99 for screen damage depending on your device and plan. This makes screen damage claims particularly valuable for people with newer, expensive phones.

Many plans also cover malfunctions that are not caused by your actions, such as battery failure or power button defects. However, normal wear and tear is typically not covered. For example, if your battery naturally degrades over time due to normal use, that would likely not be covered. But if your battery suddenly stops holding a charge due to a manufacturing defect, coverage may apply.

Some Asurion plans include coverage for theft and loss, though this is not always standard. If your plan includes theft and loss coverage, you can file a claim if your phone is stolen or lost. These claims often have higher deductibles—sometimes $200 or more—and may require you to file a police report for theft or provide documentation of your loss.

What is typically NOT covered includes intentional damage, damage from normal use, cosmetic damage that does not affect function, and damage from extreme conditions like fire or explosion. Pre-existing damage that occurred before you enrolled in the plan also would not be covered.

Practical Takeaway: Make a note of which types of damage your specific plan covers. If you experience phone damage, review your plan documentation to determine whether your situation falls within the coverage types before filing a claim.

The Phone Protection Claims Process Step-by-Step

Filing a claim with Asurion through AT&T involves several steps. The process begins when you recognize that your phone has damage that you want to report. First, gather your information: your phone number, your AT&T account number, and details about what happened to the phone. Having this information ready will make the process move more smoothly.

You can initiate a claim through multiple channels. Many customers start by visiting the Asurion website or mobile app, where you can create a claim online and provide photos of the damage. Alternatively, you can call AT&T customer service and ask to file a claim through Asurion, or you can visit an AT&T store in person. If you call, have your phone available so representatives can document the damage based on your description.

Once you file a claim, an Asurion representative will review the information you provided. They may ask you additional questions about what happened—for example, exactly how the phone was damaged, when it occurred, and whether water damage is involved. For water damage claims, Asurion typically requires the phone to be submitted for inspection by a technician who can determine whether the damage is recent and whether the phone can be repaired or needs replacement.

After your claim is reviewed and accepted, you will be informed of your next steps. For repair claims, you may be directed to ship your phone to a repair facility using a prepaid label, or you may be directed to visit a local repair location. For replacement claims, Asurion will typically send you a replacement device. In some cases, you may receive a refurbished device rather than a new one, depending on your plan terms.

The timeline for receiving a replacement or repaired phone generally ranges from 3 to 7 business days from the time your claim is approved, though this can vary. During this time, some plans may offer a loaner device so you have a phone to use, though loaner availability is not guaranteed and depends on your plan level.

Practical Takeaway: When you file a claim, be as detailed and honest as possible about what happened to your phone. Take clear photos showing the damage from multiple angles, as these will help speed up the claim review process.

Deductibles, Fees, and What You Will Pay

When you file a successful claim with Asurion, you will be required to pay a deductible before receiving your replacement or repaired phone. The deductible is a set amount that you are responsible for, and this cost varies based on several factors. Your specific phone model is the primary factor—more expensive phones typically have higher deductibles. A deductible for a basic smartphone might be $29, while the deductible for an iPhone or high-end Android phone could range from $99 to $299.

Your plan type also affects your deductible amount. If you enrolled in a basic accidental damage plan, your deductible for screen damage might be $49. If your plan includes theft and loss coverage, the deductible for a theft or loss claim is usually higher—often $200 or more. Make sure you know what your specific deductible is before filing a claim so there are no surprises.

The deductible is typically collected when you submit your claim or when you pick up your replacement device. If you use a mail-in repair service, you may be instructed to include a check or money order in the package with your damaged phone. If you use an online claim system, you can usually pay the deductible by credit or debit card. In-store claims may allow you to pay at the AT&T store.

Beyond the deductible, there are no additional fees for using your protection plan coverage. However, if you do NOT have Asurion protection and you want to repair or replace your phone through AT&T, you would pay significantly more. Out-of-warranty screen repairs can cost $150 to $400, and replacement phones can cost $600 to $1,200 or more depending on the model. This is why protection plans can provide significant value for people who are concerned about phone damage.

It is important to note that your monthly protection plan fee—the amount you pay each month on your AT&T bill—is separate from your claim deductible. You will continue paying your monthly protection fee regardless of whether you file claims. If you decide protection is not worth the cost for your situation, you can contact AT&T to remove the plan from your account at any time.
