Where to Buy a Money Order Locally

Understanding Money Orders and Their Common Uses

A money order is a paper document that functions like a check but works differently. When you purchase a money order, you pay the full amount upfront plus a small fee. The money order then represents that exact amount of money, and whoever you give it to can cash it or deposit it at a bank. Money orders are different from checks because the sender has already paid the money to the issuing company, which guarantees the funds are available.

People use money orders for several reasons. Some individuals without bank accounts rely on money orders to pay bills or send money to family members. Others use them for larger purchases from private sellers, such as buying a used car or vehicle parts, because the seller knows the payment is backed by a financial institution. Money orders also work well for paying rent, making security deposits, or sending funds through the mail when a check seems risky or when a recipient doesn't accept personal checks.

The maximum amount you can purchase on a single money order varies by issuer but typically ranges from $500 to $1,000. If you need to send more than that amount, you can purchase multiple money orders. Money orders include important information like the amount, the sender's name, the recipient's name, and a tracking number. This tracking number allows you to verify whether the money order was cashed and by whom.

Understanding where money orders come from helps you know where to buy them. Several types of businesses issue money orders, each with slightly different fees and limits. Knowing your options means you can choose the location most convenient to you and potentially save money on fees.

Practical takeaway: Before shopping for a money order, decide how much you need and whether you need the ability to track it later. This information will help you choose the best place to purchase and understand what to expect at the counter.

Retail Stores That Sell Money Orders

Walmart is one of the largest retailers selling money orders across the United States. Walmart's money order service is available at the customer service desk in nearly all of its stores. The maximum amount per money order at Walmart is typically $1,000, and the fee is usually around 88 cents, though this may vary by location. You can purchase a money order during store hours simply by visiting the customer service area, providing cash or a debit card, and filling out a brief form with your name and the recipient's information.

Target stores also offer money order services at their guest service desks. The process is similar to Walmart—you approach the service counter, provide payment, complete a form, and receive your money order. Target's money orders also max out around $1,000 per transaction, and their fees are generally competitive with other retailers. Not every Target location offers this service, so it's worth calling ahead if you're traveling a distance.

Kroger, Safeway, and other large grocery store chains sell money orders at their customer service desks. These locations are particularly convenient if you're already doing grocery shopping. The fees and maximum amounts are typically similar to other retailers. Many regional grocery chains also offer money order services, so checking with your local supermarket is worthwhile.

Dollar General and other dollar stores have become increasingly popular for money order purchases. These smaller retailers often have shorter lines than big-box stores, and many locations are conveniently scattered throughout communities. The maximum amount is sometimes lower than at larger retailers—sometimes only $500 per money order—and fees may differ, so it's good to ask before purchasing.

7-Eleven and other convenience stores sell money orders at the register or customer service counter. These locations offer the advantage of extended and late-night hours, making them useful if you need a money order outside typical business hours. However, the maximum amounts and fees may vary more at these smaller locations than at major chains.

Practical takeaway: Call ahead before visiting a retail location if you're purchasing an unusually large money order or need a money order outside standard business hours. Confirming the fee and maximum amount also prevents unnecessary trips.

Bank and Credit Union Options

If you have a bank account, your bank is often an excellent place to purchase a money order. Most banks issue money orders to both account holders and non-account holders, though account holders sometimes receive a discount on the fee. The average bank fee for a money order ranges from $3 to $10, which is higher than retail locations, but banks often allow larger individual money order amounts—sometimes up to $2,500 or more per money order.

Credit unions typically offer money order services to their members at reduced fees compared to banks. Credit union money orders often cost between $1 and $3 per order, making them one of the most affordable options if you have membership. The maximum amount per money order at credit unions usually falls in the $1,000 to $2,000 range. Even if you don't currently have a credit union account, you may be able to join one based on where you work, where you live, or your membership in certain organizations.

One advantage of purchasing money orders through banks and credit unions is that staff can often issue them immediately if you have the necessary information ready. Many banks and credit unions also offer the option to order money orders in advance for future use, which can be convenient if you know you'll need several. Additionally, banks and credit unions maintain detailed records of all money orders issued, which can be helpful if you need documentation for accounting or legal purposes.

When visiting a bank or credit union to purchase a money order, bring a form of identification and ensure you know the exact amount and the recipient's full name. Some institutions may require you to provide details about the purpose of the money order, particularly for larger amounts. Online banks without physical branches typically do not offer money order services, so customers of online-only banks need to use retail or independent locations.

Practical takeaway: If you're not currently a credit union member, researching whether you can join one may result in significant savings if you purchase money orders regularly. The membership fee, if any, can often pay for itself through lower money order fees over time.

Post Office Money Orders and Specialized Providers

The United States Postal Service (USPS) issues money orders at post offices nationwide. Postal money orders have a maximum amount of $1,000 per order and typically cost between $1.65 and $2.65 depending on the amount. USPS money orders are particularly useful for people sending money through the mail, since the money order and the letter can be mailed together. Post offices are also open on specific schedules that may differ from retail stores, so they can be an option if you need a money order at times when retailers aren't open.

Money Mart and other check-cashing services offer money orders, often with competitive fees and flexible hours. These businesses specialize in financial transactions for people without bank accounts or those who need quick service. Money Mart locations are found in many communities, and their staff is experienced with money order transactions. However, not all communities have check-cashing services, so they may not be accessible to everyone.

Western Union, known primarily for wire transfers, also issues money orders at many agent locations, including supermarkets, pharmacies, and independent businesses. Western Union money orders typically max out at $1,000 and come with various fee options. Western Union's extensive network of agent locations means you may find one nearby, even in smaller towns.

Certain pharmacies, particularly large chains like CVS and Walgreens, sell money orders at their pharmacy counters or customer service areas. The fees and maximum amounts at pharmacies are often comparable to other retail locations, and the convenience of pharmacy locations in many neighborhoods makes them accessible options. Some pharmacies also allow you to purchase money orders while picking up prescriptions or other items.

Practical takeaway: USPS money orders offer a particularly straightforward option if you're mailing payment, since you can include the money order directly in an envelope without separate trips to different locations.

Comparing Fees, Limits, and Hours Across Locations

Money order fees vary significantly across different providers, and understanding these differences can help you save money over time. Retail locations like Walmart and dollar stores typically charge the lowest fees, ranging from $0.70 to $1.50 per money order. Banks charge substantially more—typically $3 to $10 per order—but may have higher maximum amounts. Credit unions fall in the middle, usually charging $1 to $3 per order. Post offices charge around $1.65 to $2.65 depending on the amount.
