What to Expect at Your LensCrafters Eye Appointment

What Happens Before Your Appointment

Scheduling your eye appointment at LensCrafters involves a few straightforward steps. When you call your local LensCrafters or visit their website, you'll provide basic information about yourself and let them know what you're interested in—whether it's an eye exam, new glasses, contact lenses, or all three. Most LensCrafters locations can typically schedule appointments within a few days, though wait times vary by location and season. During peak times like back-to-school season or after the holidays, appointments may take longer to schedule.

Before your appointment date, LensCrafters may ask you to fill out a patient history form. This form gathers information about your health history, current medications, family eye health history, and any vision problems you've experienced. This information helps the eye doctor understand your background and any potential risk factors. You may be able to complete this form online before arriving, or you can fill it out when you get there.

It's helpful to bring your current glasses or contact lens prescription if you have one, along with your insurance card. If you wear contacts, bring a pair of contacts with you to your appointment so the eye doctor can verify the fit and prescription. Wear your regular glasses or contacts to your appointment as well—this helps the eye care team understand your current vision situation. Plan to arrive about 10-15 minutes early to allow time for check-in.

Another useful step before your appointment is writing down any vision concerns or questions you want to discuss. For example, if you've noticed difficulty reading, trouble with night driving, or eye strain from screen time, noting these details helps the eye doctor address your specific needs. Bring this list with you to your appointment.

Practical takeaway: Gather your insurance information, current prescription, and a list of vision concerns before your appointment date. Arriving 10-15 minutes early reduces stress and allows time for paperwork.

The Vision Screening and Eye Tests

Your LensCrafters eye exam typically begins with a series of vision screening tests. These tests measure how well you see at different distances and check for common vision problems. One of the first tests you'll encounter is the visual acuity test, where you read letters on a chart from across the room. This familiar test—often called the Snellen test—measures whether you have 20/20 vision or if you have nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism. The letters get progressively smaller as you move down the chart, and the eye doctor notes where your vision begins to blur.

Next, you'll likely go through automated screening machines that measure various aspects of your eye health. These machines are painless and quick. They may measure the shape of your cornea, the pressure inside your eye, and how your eyes focus light. Some machines can detect early signs of conditions like glaucoma or cataracts. These screening tools provide the eye doctor with baseline measurements to compare against future visits and to track any changes in your vision.

The eye doctor will then perform what's called a refraction test using a device called a phoropter. This machine has multiple lenses that flip in front of your eyes, and the doctor will ask you which lens combination makes the letters on the chart look sharper: "Is it better with this lens or this one?" This process helps determine your exact prescription for glasses or contacts. The refraction test typically takes 5-10 minutes and is completely painless, though it requires your honest feedback about what you see.

The eye doctor will also examine the health of your eye structures using a slit lamp—a microscope with a bright light that lets them see the front part of your eye in detail. They'll check your cornea, lens, and iris for any signs of problems. Many eye doctors also dilate your pupils using special drops so they can examine the back of your eye, including the retina and optic nerve. Dilation takes about 20-30 minutes to wear off, and during that time your vision may be blurry and you may be sensitive to light.

Practical takeaway: Eye exams include several tests to measure vision and eye health. The refraction test determines your prescription, while dilated exams check the back of your eye. Plan for sensitivity to light for 20-30 minutes after dilation.

Understanding Your Prescription Results

After the eye doctor completes your exam, they'll discuss your prescription with you. Your prescription is measured in a standardized format that looks like a combination of numbers and abbreviations. Understanding these numbers helps you make informed decisions about glasses or contacts.

Your prescription includes several key measurements. The "sphere" (marked as SPH or with a plus or minus sign) measures how much lens power you need to focus light correctly. A negative number means you're nearsighted (myopic), and a positive number means you're farsighted (hyperopic). The "cylinder" (marked as CYL) measures astigmatism, which is an uneven curve in your cornea or lens. The "axis" (marked as AXIS) describes the direction of the astigmatism. If you wear bifocals or progressive lenses, you'll also see an "add" measurement for reading power.

For example, a prescription might read: Sphere -2.50, Cylinder -0.75, Axis 180. This means you have moderate nearsightedness with a small amount of astigmatism. The numbers may be different for each eye, which is completely normal. About 65% of people have different prescriptions in each eye.

The eye doctor will explain whether your vision has changed since your last exam and discuss how significant the change is. A small change—less than 0.50 diopters—is considered stable. Larger changes may affect how you see and whether you need to update your glasses or contacts. The doctor will also discuss any eye health findings, such as early signs of dry eye, presbyopia (age-related focusing difficulty), or other concerns.

Ask the eye doctor for a written copy of your prescription. By law, you have the right to receive this information whether you're purchasing glasses from LensCrafters or elsewhere. This prescription is yours to keep and use at any optical provider you choose.

Practical takeaway: Your prescription includes specific measurements (sphere, cylinder, axis) that describe your vision correction needs. Request a written copy for your records, which you can use at any eyewear provider.

Selecting Frames and Lens Options

Once your prescription is determined, LensCrafters opticians help you select frames that work for your face shape, lifestyle, and style preferences. The frame selection process involves trying on different styles to see what looks good and feels comfortable. A properly fitting frame should sit evenly on your nose, with the top of the frame aligned with your eyebrows and the bottom resting on your cheeks. The frame should not slide down your nose or pinch your temples.

LensCrafters offers frames at various price points. Basic frames may start around $50-100, while designer frames can range from $150-400 or more. The frame cost is separate from the lens cost. During the selection process, opticians can help you understand the differences between frame materials: plastic frames are lightweight and come in many colors, metal frames are durable and often adjustable, and combination frames blend both materials.

After selecting frames, you'll choose your lens options. This is an important decision that affects your visual comfort. Standard plastic lenses are the baseline option. Anti-reflective coating reduces glare from screens and headlights, which about 30% of glasses wearers add. Scratch-resistant coating protects lenses from everyday wear. UV protection blocks harmful ultraviolet light. Progressive lenses (also called no-line bifocals) provide seamless vision at multiple distances—these are common for people over 40 who need reading correction as well as distance correction.

LensCrafters also offers specialty lenses for specific needs. Blue light filtering lenses may reduce eye strain from screen time, though research on their effectiveness is still developing. Polarized lenses reduce glare from reflective surfaces like water or snow. High-index lenses are thinner and lighter, which some people prefer for stronger prescriptions. Transitions lenses darken in sunlight and clear indoors, combining glasses and sunglasses in one pair.

The total cost of glasses typically ranges from $150-500 depending on frame choice and lens options. Many insurance plans cover a portion of glasses costs, usually $100-200 annually. Ask about LensCrafters' current promotions,
