What to Expect at the Millington DMV in Tennessee

What to Bring to the Millington DMV

The Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security's Millington office is located at 7475 Trinity Road in Millington, Tennessee. Before you visit, gathering the right documents will save you time and help your transaction move more smoothly. The specific documents you need depend on what service you're seeking, but certain items are necessary for most visits.

For identification purposes, you'll need to provide proof of identity. Valid options include a current passport, a previous Tennessee driver's license or ID, a certified birth certificate, or documents from other states. Many people don't realize that expired licenses can still serve as proof of identity, though you cannot use an expired license as your primary form of identification for driving. Make sure any documents you bring are originals or certified copies—photocopies are not accepted.

Proof of residency in Tennessee is also required for most transactions. The DMV accepts utility bills dated within the last 60 days, lease agreements, mortgage documents, property tax assessments, insurance policies, bank statements, or government-issued mail. Your name and current address must appear on the document. If you've recently moved, bring documentation showing your previous address and a document showing your new address to establish your timeline in the state.

If you're applying for a Real ID-compliant license or ID card, you'll need additional documentation. This includes proof of Social Security number (Social Security card, W-2 form, or tax return) and two forms of proof of residency. Real ID cards are required for federal buildings, military bases, and domestic air travel starting May 7, 2025, though Tennessee continues to issue both Real ID and standard licenses.

For vehicle-related transactions, bring your current registration, the vehicle's title or proof of ownership, proof of insurance, and your vehicle identification number (VIN). When renewing a vehicle registration, you can bring your renewal notice if you received one, though it's not required.

Practical takeaway: Create a checklist based on your specific transaction type before leaving home. Check the official Tennessee DMV website or call the Millington office at (901) 876-6520 to confirm all required documents for your particular situation, as requirements can vary based on individual circumstances.

Hours of Operation and Planning Your Visit

The Millington DMV operates during standard business hours that align with most Tennessee driver service centers. The office is typically open Monday through Friday, with specific hours that may shift seasonally. Most transactions during morning hours (9 a.m. to 11 a.m.) tend to have shorter wait times compared to afternoon periods, particularly around lunch time and late afternoon when people leave work.

The DMV does not accept appointments in the traditional sense, but you can obtain a ticket number when you arrive. This ticket system helps manage the flow of customers throughout the day. When you enter the facility, you'll see a machine or desk area where you select your transaction type and receive a number. The display screens show which numbers are currently being served and help you understand your position in the queue.

Wait times vary considerably depending on the day of the week and time of month. Mid-month periods (around the 15th through 20th) often see higher volume because of registration renewal deadlines. Mondays and Fridays also tend to be busier than midweek days. If you can visit on a Wednesday or Thursday afternoon, you may experience shorter waits, though this is not guaranteed and can change based on staffing and seasonal factors.

The Millington location serves a significant portion of Shelby County and surrounding areas, which means it handles a substantial volume of transactions. During peak times, wait times can range from 30 minutes to over two hours. The facility has multiple service windows, and staff attempt to balance efficiency with accuracy in completing your transaction.

Plan to bring entertainment or something to occupy your time while waiting. Many people bring phones, books, or work they can complete during their wait. The facility typically provides seating, though it can become crowded during busy periods. Arriving early in the day generally offers the best experience, particularly if you're seeking services with complex documentation requirements.

Practical takeaway: Visit on a Wednesday or Thursday between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. to minimize wait times. Bring all required documents and a form of payment before arriving. If you need to reschedule or confirm current hours, call ahead, as holiday schedules and special closures may affect normal operations.

Common Transactions at the Millington Location

The Millington DMV handles most standard driver and vehicle services available throughout Tennessee. Understanding what transactions are available at this location helps you determine whether you can complete your business there or if you need to visit a different facility.

Driver's license renewal and replacement is one of the most common transactions. If your license has expired or is expiring soon, you can renew it in person at Millington. Renewals typically cost between $27 and $32 for a five-year license, depending on whether you choose a standard license or a Real ID-compliant card. If your license was lost or stolen, the replacement fee is similar, and you'll receive a new license number and card at your visit.

New driver's license issuance for people who have never held a Tennessee license requires additional steps. You'll need to pass a vision screening at the DMV and pay the standard fee. First-time licenses involve a written knowledge test and a driving skills test, which are typically scheduled separately at a testing facility rather than completed on the spot at the Millington office.

Vehicle registration transactions, including new registrations and renewals, are handled at Millington. When you register a vehicle, you'll receive license plates and a registration certificate. Renewal notices are typically mailed before your registration expires, and you can complete the renewal at the DMV office. Online renewal is also available for some registrations through the Tennessee DMV website, which may be faster than visiting in person.

Title services for vehicles, including transfers when you buy or sell a vehicle, obtaining a duplicate title, or addressing title problems, are available at this location. If you're purchasing a vehicle, the seller provides documentation, and you complete the transfer process at the DMV. This typically takes longer than a simple registration renewal because of the additional documentation involved.

ID card services for non-drivers are also available. These cards serve as official identification but do not permit driving. They use the same form of identification and residency documentation as driver's licenses and are useful for people who don't drive but need a state-issued ID.

Practical takeaway: Review your specific need before visiting. If you're renewing your license or registration, you may be able to complete the transaction online or by mail, which would save you a trip to the office. Call (901) 876-6520 to confirm your transaction type can be completed at Millington rather than at a specialized testing location.

Payment Methods and Fees

Understanding the fees associated with your transaction and knowing what payment methods are accepted helps you prepare before your visit. DMV fees in Tennessee are set by state law and are the same across all locations, though the type of service you need determines your total cost.

The most common fees people encounter are for driver's license renewal or replacement (approximately $27 for a standard five-year license or $32 for a Real ID card), vehicle registration renewal (varies based on vehicle weight and type, typically $25 to $35 for most passenger vehicles), and title services (varies, but typically $15 to $30 depending on the transaction). These are base fees, and additional costs may apply in certain situations, such as vanity license plates, which cost extra.

The Millington DMV accepts cash, personal checks, debit cards, and credit cards. However, specific payment methods accepted may vary by window or transaction type, so it's wise to bring multiple payment options. Some windows may have technical issues with card readers at any given time, and having a backup payment method prevents delays. If you're unsure about a specific fee amount, you can call ahead to confirm the exact cost of your transaction.

If you're completing multiple transactions during a single visit—for example, renewing both your license and your vehicle registration—you'll pay separate fees for each service. Some people choose to handle these separately to spread out their costs, while others prefer to complete everything in one visit despite higher total payment.

Be aware that if you're replacing a lost or stolen license or registration document, replacement fees may be similar to renewal fees, but you should ask staff about your specific situation since some
