Update Your Phone Number on Facebook Guide

Why You Might Need to Update Your Phone Number on Facebook

Your phone number on Facebook serves several important purposes in how you use the platform. Facebook uses your phone number to help you recover your account if you forget your password, to verify your identity when logging in from new devices, and to enable two-factor authentication for added security. Additionally, if you change your phone number in real life—whether due to switching carriers, relocating to a different country, or simply getting a new device—keeping your Facebook phone number current ensures you maintain access to your account when you need it most.

Many Facebook users don't realize they have a phone number on file, or they may have entered an old or incorrect number years ago. According to Facebook's 2023 security report, accounts with updated contact information experience significantly fewer lockout situations. When your phone number becomes outdated, you might face difficulties recovering your account during emergencies, missing important security notifications, or having trouble confirming your identity to Facebook's systems.

Your phone number also connects to Facebook's other services. If you use Facebook Login to sign into other apps and websites, having an updated phone number on file provides an additional layer of verification. Some third-party apps and services linked to your Facebook account may also attempt to contact you at the phone number listed in your profile.

Understanding when and why to update this information helps you maintain control over your account and stay informed about security matters. The process itself takes only a few minutes, but the preparation and understanding of the process can prevent confusion.

Practical Takeaway: Review your current phone number on Facebook at least once per year, or whenever you change phone carriers or devices. This habit prevents lockout situations and keeps your account recovery options available.

How to Access Your Phone Number Settings on Facebook

Finding your phone number settings on Facebook requires navigating through the account settings menu. The process differs slightly depending on whether you're using Facebook on a computer or mobile device, but the basic steps remain consistent. Facebook has maintained this settings structure since 2019, making it relatively stable across different account types.

On a computer or tablet using Facebook's web version, begin by clicking the downward-facing arrow in the top-right corner of your screen. This arrow appears next to your profile picture. From the dropdown menu that appears, select "Settings and privacy," then click "Settings." You'll see a left-hand menu with various options. Look for the "Personal information" section and click on it. Within this section, you'll find "Contact information," which contains your phone number field.

If you're using Facebook on a smartphone app, the navigation differs slightly. Tap the three horizontal lines (called a hamburger menu) at the bottom-right corner of your screen. Scroll down and select "Settings and privacy," then tap "Settings." From there, scroll down until you find "Personal information," and tap it. Select "Contact information" to access your phone number field.

Facebook's interface occasionally changes minor details, such as button positions or menu label wording, but the fundamental path to phone number settings has remained consistent. Some accounts may have slightly different menu structures if they're part of special programs or have parental controls enabled.

Practical Takeaway: Bookmark or take a screenshot of the path to your contact information settings so you can return to them quickly in the future without needing to search through multiple menus.

Steps for Updating Your Phone Number

Once you've located your contact information settings, the actual update process is straightforward. Facebook displays your current phone number prominently, along with options to edit or remove it. The system handles phone numbers from virtually every country and uses a standardized international format.

To update your number, click or tap the edit button next to your current phone number. Facebook will display your existing number with an "Edit" option nearby. Click this option, and the phone number field becomes editable. You can now select all the text in the field and delete it before entering your new number. When typing your new number, include the country code and area code. For United States numbers, this means entering the format: +1 (XXX) XXX-XXXX, where XXX represents your area code and line number digits.

Facebook's system automatically recognizes country codes, so if you're entering a number from outside the United States, the system will format it according to your country's standard. For example, a United Kingdom number would begin with +44, while a Canadian number uses +1 like the United States. You don't need to manually add these codes—Facebook's system often fills them automatically based on your account location settings.

After entering your new number, look for a "Save" or "Confirm" button. Facebook may send a verification code to your new phone number to confirm you own that number and can receive text messages there. Check the text messages on your new phone, find the code Facebook sends, and enter it into the verification field on Facebook's website. This verification step ensures that someone else hasn't changed your phone number without your permission.

If you don't receive a verification code within five minutes, Facebook offers options to retry the SMS or use an alternative verification method. Some accounts may receive a phone call with the verification code instead of a text message, depending on your settings and location.

Practical Takeaway: Have your new phone number ready and your phone in hand during the update process. Keep your new phone accessible for at least 15 minutes after updating to ensure you can receive and enter the verification code.

Important Considerations Before You Update

Before changing your phone number on Facebook, consider several factors that might affect your account security and access. First, determine whether you still have access to your old phone number or the device it was on. If you've already switched to a new phone and discarded or sold your old one, you should update your number as soon as possible. Leaving an outdated phone number on file creates security risks, as someone who obtains that old number could potentially use it to gain access to your account.

If you're switching phone numbers but will still have temporary access to your old number, you might wait until you've verified your new number is properly set up on Facebook before closing out your old phone account. This provides a brief buffer period where you can address any unexpected access issues. However, don't delay this update indefinitely—aim to complete it within a week of receiving your new number.

Consider whether you have other recovery options set up on your account besides your phone number. Facebook recommends having multiple ways to recover your account, including backup email addresses. If you only have a phone number as your recovery method, you're more vulnerable to problems. While updating your phone number, take a moment to verify that you also have an up-to-date email address and possibly security questions set up.

If you're experiencing issues with two-factor authentication or account recovery before making this change, you might want to document those issues. Sometimes updating your phone number resolves technical problems, but other times it reveals deeper account security issues that need separate attention.

Practical Takeaway: Before updating, write down your current phone number and keep it safe for at least one month. If problems arise with your new number, you may need your old number to verify your identity to Facebook's support team.

Troubleshooting Common Phone Number Update Issues

Sometimes the phone number update process doesn't go smoothly. The most frequent issue is not receiving the verification code text message. This can happen for several reasons, including network delays, carrier filtering, or having an international number that Facebook's system initially misformats. If you don't receive a code after five minutes, Facebook provides a "Didn't receive a code?" option that allows you to request a new code or switch to phone call verification instead.

Another common problem occurs when users enter their phone number in an incorrect format. Facebook requires country codes and specific formatting, though the system is relatively forgiving about spacing and punctuation. If your number is rejected, try entering it with a plus sign followed by the country code, then your complete phone number without dashes or spaces: +1XXXXXXXXXX for US numbers.

Some users report that Facebook claims their phone number is already associated with another account. This sometimes happens when you previously used the same number on a different Facebook account that still exists. You may need to remove the number from that other account first, or contact Facebook's support if you no longer have access to the old account. Facebook's support page on phone number issues provides a form to report this situation.

International users sometimes encounter issues when their country's phone numbering system doesn't align with what Facebook's system expects. In these cases, contacting
