Understanding Your SSDI Application Status

What SSDI Is and How the System Works

Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) is a federal program that provides monthly payments to people who have a medical condition that prevents them from working. The program is run by the Social Security Administration (SSA), a government agency. Unlike some benefits programs, SSDI requires that you have a work history—you must have paid Social Security taxes through previous employment to be considered.

SSDI is different from Supplemental Security Income (SSI), which is another Social Security program. SSI does not require a work history and is based on financial need. Some people receive both programs, but they have separate rules and requirements. Understanding which program you might be looking at is an important first step.

When you submit information to the SSA about your condition and work history, the agency reviews your case to determine whether your situation meets their criteria. This process involves medical documentation, work records, and a formal review. The SSA receives millions of submissions each year—in 2023, the agency processed over 3 million requests for various Social Security programs combined.

The SSDI program was created in 1956 as part of the Social Security system. It currently serves approximately 8.7 million people in the United States who receive monthly payments averaging around $1,550. However, the amount varies based on your individual work history and earnings record.

Practical takeaway: Before checking your case status, confirm that SSDI is the right program for your situation. If you have recent work history and have paid Social Security taxes, SSDI may be relevant. If you have limited work history, SSI or other programs might be more appropriate. You can read about both on the official SSA website.

The Stages of an SSDI Case From Submission to Decision

Your SSDI case moves through several distinct stages after you submit your information. Understanding these stages helps you know what to expect and why your case might take time. The entire process typically ranges from a few months to over a year, depending on the complexity of your medical situation and the current volume of cases being reviewed.

The first stage is the initial review. During this time, the SSA checks whether your submission is complete and whether you meet basic requirements like having sufficient work history. This stage usually takes 1 to 3 weeks. You may receive a notice asking for additional information if something is missing. It is important to respond promptly if the SSA requests documents or clarification.

The second stage is medical evaluation. The SSA reviews your medical records, doctor's reports, and any test results you have submitted. They may also request that you see a doctor selected by the SSA for an independent examination. This stage can take several weeks to several months. The SSA has offices in each state that coordinate with doctors and specialists to review medical evidence.

The third stage is the decision phase. After reviewing all medical and work history information, the SSA makes a determination. You will receive a written notice explaining the decision. If the answer is no, the notice will explain why. If you disagree with the decision, you have the right to request reconsideration or an appeal. Many cases are initially denied but approved upon appeal—approximately 35% of cases denied at the initial level are approved when appealed to a judge.

The fourth stage is ongoing for those approved. Once you begin receiving payments, the SSA continues to monitor your case. You may have periodic reviews to confirm that your condition still prevents work. The frequency of these reviews depends on your diagnosis and situation.

Practical takeaway: Knowing which stage your case is in helps you understand what happens next. Write down the date you submitted your information and use that timeline to estimate which stage you might be in. If more than two months have passed and you have not heard anything, it is reasonable to contact the SSA to ask about your case status.

How to Check Your Case Status Online and by Phone

The SSA provides several methods to check the status of your case. The most direct method is through the official SSA website at ssa.gov. You can create or log into your "my Social Security" account, which is a personalized portal where you can view information about your Social Security record, including any pending cases or decisions.

To use the online portal, you will need to verify your identity. The SSA uses a secure verification process that may involve answering questions about your personal history or using a video verification method. This process takes 10 to 15 minutes. Once you have verified your account, you can log in anytime to check your status. The portal shows whether a case is still pending, when the SSA last reviewed your case, and whether a decision has been made.

If you prefer to speak with someone directly, you can call the SSA's toll-free number at 1-800-772-1213. This number operates Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. local time. When you call, have your Social Security number ready. You will likely wait on hold, as the SSA receives a very high volume of calls each day. Calling earlier in the week and earlier in the day typically means shorter wait times. The average wait time for a representative was about 15 minutes in 2023, though this varies.

You can also visit a local Social Security office in person. Find the office nearest you through the office locator on ssa.gov. Going in person can sometimes result in shorter waits than calling the national line, particularly if you visit early in the morning on a Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday. However, many offices recommend calling ahead or requesting an appointment through the website first.

When checking your status, you will typically learn the following: whether your case is still being reviewed, what stage the review is in, whether the SSA needs additional information from you, and whether a decision has been made. The notice you receive will not predict the outcome—it simply describes where your case stands in the process.

Practical takeaway: Set up your "my Social Security" account now, even if your case is still pending. This gives you a reliable way to check status 24 hours a day without waiting on hold. Write down your account login information in a safe place. If you do not use a computer regularly, ask a trusted family member to help you set up the account or to check it for you periodically.

Understanding Case Status Notices and What They Mean

The SSA sends written notices throughout your case. These notices inform you of progress, request information, or provide a final decision. Learning to read these notices carefully helps you understand where your case stands and what action, if any, you need to take.

An "Acknowledgment of Claim" notice is typically the first notice you receive. It confirms that the SSA received your submission and provides a claim number. This notice is sent within 1 to 2 weeks of your submission. Keep this number—you will use it when calling the SSA or checking your status online.

A "Request for Medical Evidence" or "Request for Work History Information" notice means the SSA needs additional documentation to move forward. This is routine and does not indicate a problem. The notice lists exactly what documents are needed and provides a deadline for submission, typically 10 days. It is important to gather the requested information and send it by the deadline, as missing the deadline can delay your case or result in a negative decision.

A "Medical Examination Appointment" notice means the SSA has scheduled you to see a doctor for an independent evaluation. This is a standard part of the process. You will be told where to go, when to go, and what to bring. The appointment is free. Missing this appointment without contacting the SSA beforehand can result in your case being denied, so mark the date clearly and arrange transportation if needed.

A "Decision Notice" is the final determination. It will state either that you have been approved for benefits or that your case has been denied. If approved, it will show the monthly payment amount and when payments will start. If denied, it will explain the reason. The notice will also describe your right to appeal and the timeframe for doing so—typically 60 days.

Some notices are "Continuing Disability Review" forms, sent to people already receiving benefits. These ask you to provide updated information about your medical condition and work status. These must also be completed and returned on time.

Practical takeaway: Read every notice from the SSA carefully and do not discard any of them. Keep all notices in a folder. If a notice requests information or an appointment, respond or comply within the stated
