Understanding What Matters to Women: A Free Guide

Why Understanding Women's Priorities Matters

Women make up roughly half the world's population, yet their needs, concerns, and values are often overlooked or misunderstood in business, policy, and everyday interactions. Research consistently shows that what matters to women differs in important ways from generalized assumptions about human behavior. Studies from organizations like Pew Research Center and the World Economic Forum reveal that women prioritize factors like workplace flexibility, safety, financial security, healthcare access, and family support differently than marketing and policy often assumes.

The stakes of this misunderstanding are real. When organizations don't understand women's actual priorities, they create products, services, and policies that don't address real needs. For example, medical research has historically excluded women from studies, leading to medications and treatments designed based on male physiology. Women with heart disease often have different symptoms than men, but doctors trained on male-centered research patterns sometimes miss these warning signs. Similarly, workplace policies designed without considering women's caregiving responsibilities, safety concerns, or career development patterns create barriers that don't exist for men.

Understanding what matters to women also matters economically. Women control or influence roughly 70-80% of consumer spending decisions globally. Women entrepreneurs are starting businesses at higher rates than men, yet they receive a significantly smaller share of venture capital funding. When companies and investors understand women's priorities—whether in product design, service delivery, or funding criteria—they make better decisions that serve larger markets and stronger communities.

This guide explores research-backed insights into what matters to women across different life stages, circumstances, and backgrounds. Rather than treating women as a single group, the information recognizes that women's priorities vary by age, culture, economic situation, family structure, and personal goals. The goal is to move beyond stereotypes toward understanding based on data and real experiences.

Takeaway: Misunderstanding women's priorities leads to ineffective products, policies, and services. Accurate understanding creates better outcomes for individuals and organizations.

Career and Economic Security: What Women Say Matters Most

Survey data consistently ranks financial security and meaningful work as top priorities for women. According to Pew Research Center studies, approximately 78% of women say having a good job is important to their sense of identity and purpose, comparable to men's responses. However, women and men often define "good job" differently. Women more frequently prioritize flexibility, workplace culture, and feeling valued alongside salary—while men more often emphasize salary progression as the primary measure of job quality.

Women face specific economic challenges that shape their priorities. In the United States, women earn approximately 84 cents for every dollar men earn on average, with the gap wider for women of color. This wage gap compounds over time, affecting retirement savings, home ownership, and financial independence. For women supporting families alone—roughly 33% of households with children—economic security takes on heightened urgency. Single mothers earning median income spend a significantly higher percentage of earnings on childcare than married couples, making affordable childcare a critical economic factor rather than merely a convenience.

Career advancement represents another distinct priority. Research from the Harvard Business School found that while women want advancement opportunities equally with men, they often face different barriers. Women report that "prove-it-again" bias requires them to repeatedly demonstrate competence, while men's competence is often assumed after initial demonstration. Women also navigate motherhood differently in workplace contexts—taking time out of workforce reduces earnings trajectory, while men rarely face equivalent career penalties for parenthood.

Entrepreneurship reveals another dimension of women's economic priorities. Women-owned businesses represent approximately 42% of all businesses in the U.S., yet receive only 2-3% of venture capital funding. Studies show women entrepreneurs prioritize business models that create social impact alongside profit, seek mentorship and community connection, and value work-life integration more than traditional male-dominated venture-backed models. This reflects different priorities in what "success" means.

Understanding these economic priorities matters because policy, workplace practices, and financial products can better address real barriers. Flexible work arrangements, transparent pay scales, affordable childcare options, and mentorship programs addressing specific advancement barriers show companies understand what women actually prioritize in economic life.

Takeaway: Women prioritize financial security and meaningful work, but define "good work" differently than traditional career models assume—emphasizing flexibility, culture, and values alongside compensation.

Health, Safety, and Wellbeing Across Life Stages

Women's health priorities shift significantly across different life stages, yet healthcare systems often treat women's health as a single category rather than evolving needs. Adolescent girls prioritize reproductive health education and mental health support. Women of reproductive age focus on pregnancy planning, contraception options, and managing work alongside potential motherhood. Midlife women address hormonal changes, preventative screening, and chronic disease management. Older women prioritize maintaining independence, managing multiple health conditions, and addressing age-related health changes.

Mental health represents a critical but often underaddressed priority. Women experience depression and anxiety disorders at rates roughly 40-60% higher than men, according to the National Institute of Mental Health. However, the causes and presentations often differ. Women's depression frequently connects to relationship stress, caregiving burden, and social isolation, while traditional mental health screening focuses on individual factors. Women also report feeling unheard by healthcare providers—approximately 40% of women report dismissive treatment when discussing physical symptoms, particularly pain. This "being taken seriously" represents a fundamental priority women identify repeatedly in health surveys.

Safety—both physical and medical—ranks as a core health priority. Women experience high rates of intimate partner violence, with one in four women experiencing severe intimate partner violence in their lifetime according to the CDC. This reality shapes women's everyday priorities: route planning, situational awareness, and having trusted people to talk to about safety concerns. In medical contexts, safety includes concerns about medication side effects, reproductive autonomy, and being heard about body changes. Women prioritize having healthcare providers who listen, respect their concerns, and involve them in decisions rather than directing treatment.

Preventative health and wellness also matter more to women than media often portrays. Women aren't primarily concerned with appearance-focused wellness; rather, they prioritize functional health—maintaining energy to manage responsibilities, preventing chronic diseases, staying mobile and independent as they age, and managing stress. Research from the American Psychological Association shows women invest more time researching health information, comparing treatment options, and managing family members' health alongside their own.

Understanding these health priorities means recognizing that women's health communication should address actual concerns: mental health access, being heard by providers, practical health management alongside life demands, and safety. Healthcare systems that acknowledge these priorities—offering flexible appointments, providers trained in listening to women's concerns, mental health integration, and safety resources—better serve women's actual needs.

Takeaway: Women's health priorities evolve across life stages and center on being heard by providers, addressing mental health, maintaining functional wellness, and physical safety—not just managing illness.

Relationships, Family Structure, and Social Connection

Family relationships and social connection consistently rank among women's highest priorities across research studies. However, "family" doesn't mean one thing. Women may prioritize relationships with children, parents, partners, siblings, or chosen family networks differently depending on life circumstances. Data from the General Social Survey shows women invest more time in maintaining relationships and communication than men do on average, reporting greater satisfaction from these investments but also experiencing more stress from relationship conflicts.

Motherhood represents a major life priority for many women, yet the experience has become increasingly complicated. Approximately 71% of women have children by age 40, but the percentage varies significantly by education level and economic situation. What matters to mothers has shifted dramatically—the majority of mothers now work for pay, changing how women balance motherhood with economic contributions. Yet workplace and policy structures often haven't adapted to this reality. Women report that "having it all" remains primarily their responsibility: managing children's schedules, organizing household work, and maintaining career progression, while partners contribute less in most partnerships.

For women without children, different social priorities emerge. Research shows childless women often prioritize career development, creative pursuits, friendship networks, and community involvement more intensely. Yet these women report feeling socially pressured to justify not having children, and sometimes experience workplace discrimination assuming they have more "availability" for demanding schedules. Understanding that motherhood represents one path among many—equally valued but not universally chosen—matters for policies and culture.

Caregiving for aging parents represents another family priority increasing for women. Approximately 34% of caregivers for aging parents are women, and women typically spend more hours on caregiving work than men. This caregiving often happens simultaneously with motherhood, creating the "sandwich generation" experience. Women prioritize maintaining these family
