Understanding Tire Load Index 116 Rating

What Is a Tire Load Index and Why It Matters

The tire load index is a numerical rating that tells you the maximum weight a single tire can safely carry. This rating appears on the sidewall of your tire, usually as a two or three-digit number. For example, a load index of 116 means that particular tire can support a maximum load of 2,756 pounds when properly inflated and operating under the conditions specified by the tire manufacturer.

Understanding this rating is important because using tires with an insufficient load index can lead to tire failure, blowouts, and loss of vehicle control. Every vehicle has a specific weight requirement based on its design, and your tires must be rated to handle that weight safely. The load index works in combination with the tire's speed rating (the letter that follows the load index) to give you complete information about the tire's capabilities.

The load index system was developed by the Tire and Rim Association and is standardized across the tire industry worldwide. This means a tire with a load index of 116 from any manufacturer will have the same weight capacity. The system uses a numbered scale that ranges from 0 to 150, with higher numbers indicating greater load capacity. Most passenger vehicles use tires with load indexes between 85 and 110, while load index 116 is common on SUVs, crossovers, and light trucks that need to carry heavier loads.

Your vehicle's door jamb or owner's manual specifies the correct tire load index for your specific make and model. It is illegal and unsafe to install tires with a load index lower than what your vehicle manufacturer recommends. Installing tires with a higher load index than required is acceptable and provides an extra safety margin, though it will not improve your vehicle's performance.

Practical Takeaway: Locate your vehicle's tire placard (usually found on the inside of the driver's side door) and note the recommended tire size and load index. Compare this number to the tires currently on your vehicle to confirm they meet your manufacturer's specifications.

Breaking Down the Load Index 116 Rating

A load index of 116 specifically indicates that each tire can carry a maximum of 2,756 pounds under standard conditions. To put this in perspective, a typical passenger car weighs between 2,800 and 3,500 pounds total, while an SUV or light truck typically weighs between 4,000 and 6,000 pounds. Because a vehicle's weight is distributed across four tires, each tire does not need to support the entire vehicle weight—it only supports approximately one-quarter of it, plus any additional load you add.

Load index 116 falls into the medium-to-high range for passenger tires. Common load indexes you might encounter are 95 (1,521 pounds), 104 (1,984 pounds), 110 (2,469 pounds), 116 (2,756 pounds), and 120 (3,086 pounds). The difference between each load index number represents a small but significant increase in weight capacity. Going from load index 110 to 116 adds 287 pounds of capacity per tire, which may not seem like much, but across four tires that equals 1,148 pounds of additional carrying capacity for your entire vehicle.

Tires rated at load index 116 are commonly found on mid-size and full-size SUVs, crossovers, minivans, and pickup trucks. Vehicles like the Chevrolet Tahoe, Ford Explorer, Toyota 4Runner, and Honda Pilot frequently come equipped with tires rated at or near load index 116. Sedans and smaller vehicles typically use lower load indexes, while heavy-duty trucks and commercial vehicles may use load indexes of 130 or higher.

The load index rating assumes the tire is properly inflated to the pressure specified by the vehicle manufacturer (not the pressure listed on the tire sidewall, which is the maximum pressure). Underinflated tires cannot support their rated load and may overheat, leading to premature wear or failure. Overinflated tires can reduce traction and create an uncomfortable ride. Maintaining correct tire pressure is essential for the load index to be valid.

Practical Takeaway: If you are shopping for replacement tires, look for tires with a load index that matches or exceeds your vehicle manufacturer's recommendation. Never downgrade to a lower load index, as this compromises safety.

How Load Index Is Calculated and Tested

The load index rating is determined through rigorous laboratory testing conducted according to standards set by organizations like the Tire and Rim Association and the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). Tire manufacturers must test each tire model to determine its maximum safe load capacity under controlled conditions. These tests measure how much weight a tire can support at a specific inflation pressure and speed before it fails or shows signs of damage.

The testing process involves placing a tire on a drum or machine that simulates road conditions while gradually increasing the load on the tire. Engineers monitor factors like temperature, sidewall deflection, and structural integrity. They test multiple samples of the same tire to ensure consistency and safety. The tire is considered to have reached its load limit when it fails structurally or shows permanent deformation that would make it unsafe for continued use.

Once the maximum safe load is determined through testing, manufacturers assign a load index number from the standardized scale. This scale was created so that a tire with load index 116 has the same capacity regardless of the brand or model. A Michelin tire rated at 116 will safely carry 2,756 pounds, just as a Goodyear or Bridgestone tire rated at 116 will carry the same weight. This standardization allows vehicle manufacturers to specify a load index in their recommendations, knowing that any tire meeting that rating will work correctly.

The testing also accounts for safety margins. The maximum load a tire can carry in testing is higher than the load index rating it receives. This means there is built-in protection, and the rated capacity is conservative. Tire manufacturers do not rate tires at their absolute maximum; instead, they rate them at a level that provides durability and safety under normal driving conditions over the tire's expected lifespan.

Practical Takeaway: Understanding that load index comes from actual physical testing performed by manufacturers should reinforce why using the correct rating is important—the numbers are based on real engineering data and safety testing, not estimates.

Matching Load Index to Your Vehicle's Requirements

Finding the correct load index for your vehicle begins with locating your vehicle's tire placard, also called the tire information label. This placard is typically found on the inside of the driver's side door jamb, but it can also be located inside the fuel door, on the spare tire cover, or in your owner's manual. The placard lists the vehicle manufacturer's recommended tire size and includes the load index as part of the tire size specification.

A typical tire size might look like this: 265/60R18 110H. In this example, 265 is the tire width in millimeters, 60 is the aspect ratio (sidewall height as a percentage of width), R indicates radial construction, 18 is the wheel diameter in inches, 110 is the load index, and H is the speed rating. When you read the tire size on your vehicle's placard, the load index is already included in that specification. Your job is to match replacement tires to that exact specification, or to a specification with an equal or higher load index.

You should never install a tire with a load index lower than your vehicle manufacturer recommends. Doing so could result in tire overload, overheating, blowouts, or structural failure. However, you may install a tire with a higher load index if it comes as part of a larger tire size upgrade. Some people upgrade to a larger wheel and tire combination, which typically includes a higher load index. As long as the larger tire and wheel combination fits your vehicle and the load index meets or exceeds your manufacturer's requirements, this is acceptable.

When you take your vehicle to a tire shop for replacement tires, bring your vehicle's placard information or your owner's manual. A reputable tire shop will verify that the tires they install match your vehicle's requirements. If you are ordering tires online, use a tire size calculator or check your placard carefully to ensure you select the correct size and load index before purchasing.

Practical Takeaway: Take a photo of your vehicle's tire placard or write down the exact tire size and load index recommendation. Keep this information in your phone or wallet so you
