Understanding the Costco Anywhere Visa Card

What the Costco Anywhere Visa Card Is and How It Works

The Costco Anywhere Visa Card is a rewards credit card issued by Citibank in partnership with Costco. Unlike store-specific credit cards that only work at one retailer, this card functions as a general-purpose Visa that you can use at millions of locations worldwide. The card is designed specifically for Costco members and offers cash back rewards on purchases made both inside Costco warehouses and at other merchants.

The card operates like a standard credit card. You receive a physical card and can link it to digital wallets such as Apple Pay, Google Pay, or Samsung Pay for contactless payments. When you make a purchase, the transaction is processed through the Visa network, and you accumulate rewards based on the merchant category and your spending amount. Your monthly statement arrives from Citi, and you make payments directly to the card issuer rather than to Costco.

One important distinction is that this card is separate from your Costco membership. You need an active Costco membership to obtain the card, but the card itself and your membership are two different relationships. Your membership allows you to shop at Costco warehouses, while the credit card is a financial product from Citi. You can keep your membership and cancel the card, or vice versa, though certain benefits tie the two together.

The Costco Anywhere Visa Card replaced the previous American Express-based Costco card in 2015, giving Costco members access to a card accepted at vastly more locations since Visa has broader merchant acceptance than American Express. This shift reflected changing consumer preferences and the practical advantage of using the card outside of Costco for everyday purchases.

Practical Takeaway: Think of the Costco Anywhere Visa Card as two products in one: a Costco membership benefit and a general-purpose rewards credit card. You can use it anywhere Visa is accepted, not just at Costco, but you must be a Costco member to obtain it.

Rewards Structure and Cash Back Categories

The Costco Anywhere Visa Card operates on a tiered rewards structure where different types of purchases earn different percentages of cash back. Understanding these tiers helps you maximize the value of the card depending on your spending patterns.

At Costco warehouses and Costco.com, you earn 4% cash back on eligible gas purchases (including Costco gas stations), 3% cash back on travel purchases made through the Costco Travel website or booked directly with airlines and hotels, and 2% cash back on all other purchases at Costco locations and Costco.com. For all other merchants worldwide, you earn 1% cash back on purchases. This means if you spend $500 on groceries at Costco, you receive $10 in cash back. If you spend $100 at a restaurant outside of Costco, you earn $1 in cash back.

The 4% gas category is particularly valuable for high-volume users. A household that spends $200 monthly on gas—which is reasonable for families with regular commutes—would earn $8 per month or $96 annually just from gas purchases. Over five years, that represents $480 in cash back from gas alone. However, this 4% rate applies only to gas purchases at Costco gas stations and certain other designated fuel retailers, not to gas purchased at non-Costco stations.

Travel rewards through Costco Travel offer 3% cash back on flights, hotels, rental cars, and vacation packages booked through this service. A family booking a $3,000 vacation package through Costco Travel would receive $90 back. This encourages members to use Costco's travel booking service rather than booking directly with airlines or hotels outside the Costco ecosystem.

Cash back rewards are not automatic deposits—you receive them as an annual reward certificate that appears on your statement. You can use this certificate to make purchases at Costco warehouses or on Costco.com. If you earned $200 in cash back during a year, Costco sends you a $200 certificate valid at Costco locations. This structure means the cash back is useful specifically for Costco shopping, which keeps the rewards within the Costco ecosystem.

Practical Takeaway: The 4% cash back at Costco gas stations and 3% on Costco Travel purchases offer the strongest returns. However, all cash back comes as annual Costco certificates, so you must visit a Costco to use the rewards rather than receiving direct cash deposits.

Fees, Annual Costs, and When the Card Makes Financial Sense

The Costco Anywhere Visa Card carries an annual fee of $65 for the standard card, with a $120 annual fee for the Costco Anywhere Visa Card Executive version, which offers enhanced rewards. This fee structure means you should evaluate whether your expected cash back rewards justify the annual cost before obtaining the card.

Let's work through a financial example. If you spend $2,000 annually at Costco, earning an average of 2.5% cash back (a blend of different categories), you would accumulate $50 in rewards. After subtracting the $65 annual fee, you would lose $15 on the transaction. However, if you spend $4,000 annually at Costco plus $2,000 on Costco gas at 4% ($80), your total rewards would be approximately $180, which exceeds the $65 fee by $115. This shows that the card's value depends directly on your spending volume and spending mix.

The card offers no foreign transaction fees, which matters for international travelers. If you travel internationally and make purchases in foreign currencies, you pay no additional fee beyond the standard exchange rate conversion. This contrasts with many other credit cards that charge 2-3% for foreign transactions. For someone taking an international trip and spending $2,000, avoiding a 2% fee saves $40.

There are no other common fees associated with the card. Citi does not charge late fees, annual percentage rate (APR) fees in the standard sense, or cash advance fees at the rates some other cards charge. However, standard credit card interest applies to any unpaid balance at the card's variable APR, which changes with market conditions. Currently, the APR ranges from approximately 17.99% to 26.99%, meaning carrying a balance is expensive.

The Executive version of the card costs $120 annually but offers 3% cash back on Costco purchases instead of 2%, 3% at gas stations instead of 4%, 3% on travel instead of 3%, and 2% on travel and restaurants outside Costco instead of 1%. For someone spending heavily at Costco and on Costco Travel, the Executive version might return more cash back than the standard version, but this requires annual spending of approximately $3,000-$4,000 to offset the higher annual fee.

Practical Takeaway: Calculate your annual Costco spending before obtaining this card. You need roughly $2,600-$3,000 in annual Costco purchases to generate enough cash back rewards to offset the $65 annual fee. If your Costco spending is below this threshold, the card's value is questionable.

How to Obtain the Card and Member Requirements

To obtain the Costco Anywhere Visa Card, you must hold an active Costco membership. Costco offers several membership tiers: the Gold Star membership (standard membership), the Executive membership, and certain regional variations. All membership tiers provide the same card product, though benefits may differ slightly. If you do not have a Costco membership, you would need to establish one before the card is available to you.

Once you have an active membership, you can request the card through several channels. At a Costco warehouse, you can visit the membership desk and speak with a representative. The process typically takes less than 15 minutes. You fill out a brief application that requests basic information: your full name, Social Security number for credit verification, address, and income information. The membership desk representative submits this information to Citibank, which makes a credit decision.

You can also request the card online through Costco.com if you log into your membership account. The online application process is similar but conducted digitally. You enter the same information, and Citi receives the application electronically. Response times vary, but many applicants receive a decision within hours or a few business days.
