Understanding Leg and Foot Numbness Causes and Solutions

What Causes Leg and Foot Numbness

Numbness in the legs and feet happens when nerves stop sending signals properly to your brain. This sensation can range from a mild tingling to complete loss of feeling. Understanding what causes this numbness is the first step toward addressing it.

One of the most common causes is compression of nerves. When a nerve gets squeezed by surrounding tissue, bone, or muscle, it cannot function properly. This compression can happen in many places along the path from your spine to your toes. Pressure on a nerve may develop suddenly or over months and years.

Diabetes stands as one of the leading medical causes of leg and foot numbness. High blood sugar levels can damage the outer covering of nerves, a condition called diabetic neuropathy. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 37 million people in the United States have diabetes, and roughly one-third of them experience nerve damage. This type of numbness often starts in the feet and moves upward over time.

Sciatica occurs when the sciatic nerve—the longest nerve in the human body—becomes irritated or compressed. This typically causes numbness or tingling that runs from the lower back, through the buttocks, and down one leg. A herniated disc in the spine is a frequent cause of sciatica.

Other significant causes include:

• Vitamin B12 deficiency, which affects nerve function throughout the body
• Alcohol use disorder, which can cause alcoholic neuropathy affecting the feet and hands
• Hypothyroidism, an underactive thyroid that slows metabolism and affects nerves
• Multiple sclerosis, an autoimmune disease that damages nerve coverings
• Spinal stenosis, a narrowing of spaces in the spine that can pinch nerves
• Infections such as Lyme disease or shingles
• Chemotherapy medications used in cancer treatment
• Kidney or liver disease

Practical takeaway: Keep a record of when numbness occurs, what activities trigger it, and how long it lasts. This information helps you and your healthcare provider identify patterns and potential causes.

How Nerve Compression Creates Numbness

Nerve compression is like stepping on a garden hose—water cannot flow properly when the hose is squeezed. Similarly, when tissue presses on a nerve, electrical signals cannot travel along that nerve pathway. The brain then fails to receive sensation signals from the affected area, resulting in numbness or tingling.

The spine contains 31 pairs of nerves that branch out to every part of your body. Between each vertebra are small openings called foramen through which these nerves exit. If a disc herniates, bone spurs develop, or ligaments thicken, these openings can narrow. This narrowing compresses the nerves passing through, causing numbness in the legs or feet depending on which nerve is affected.

Piriformis syndrome demonstrates another compression example. The piriformis is a small muscle deep in the buttocks. When this muscle tightens or spasms, it can press against the sciatic nerve running underneath it. People with this condition often experience numbness, tingling, or pain that radiates down the back of the leg.

Carpal tunnel syndrome in the wrist provides a familiar example of nerve compression, though it affects the hand rather than the legs. The median nerve passes through a narrow tunnel in the wrist. Repetitive hand motions, swelling, or inflammation can compress this nerve. The same principle applies to leg and foot numbness—compression reduces the nerve's ability to function.

Pressure on nerves can develop gradually or suddenly. Gradual compression might result from weight gain, muscle tightening from poor posture, or degenerative disc disease where discs slowly lose water and height. Sudden compression can occur after an injury, a fall, or a car accident that displaces a disc or causes swelling.

The severity of symptoms depends on how much pressure exists and how long it has been present. Mild compression might cause intermittent tingling. Severe compression can create complete numbness or weakness that interferes with walking and balance. The longer compression continues without relief, the greater the risk of permanent nerve damage.

Practical takeaway: Pay attention to positions and activities that make numbness better or worse. If numbness improves when you change position or stretch, nerve compression is likely involved. This information guides conversations with your healthcare provider about treatment options.

Systemic Diseases That Affect Nerve Function

Several whole-body diseases damage nerves throughout the body, not just in one area. These systemic conditions affect multiple body systems and commonly cause leg and foot numbness as one symptom among many.

Diabetes is the most prevalent systemic disease causing numbness in developed countries. When blood sugar remains elevated, glucose molecules attach to proteins and fats in nerve tissue, causing damage. This process is called glycation. Over time, high blood sugar thickens blood vessel walls, reducing oxygen flow to nerves. The combination of direct glucose damage and reduced oxygen supply creates diabetic peripheral neuropathy. In the United States, diabetes accounts for approximately 60 percent of non-traumatic leg amputations, most often preceded by numbness and loss of protective sensation.

Vitamin B12 deficiency impairs nerve cell maintenance and myelin formation. Myelin is the protective coating around nerves, similar to plastic insulation around electrical wires. Without adequate B12, myelin breaks down and nerves cannot conduct signals properly. B12 deficiency also causes anemia, fatigue, and cognitive problems. Vegans, people with pernicious anemia, and those taking certain diabetes medications face higher B12 deficiency risk.

Hypothyroidism slows overall metabolism, including nerve function and repair. The thyroid produces hormones that regulate how quickly cells work. When thyroid hormone levels drop, nerve cells repair themselves more slowly and conduct signals less efficiently. Approximately 4.6 percent of the U.S. population over age 12 has hypothyroidism, and numbness can be an early sign.

Autoimmune diseases like lupus and Sjögren's syndrome cause the immune system to attack nerve tissue. Multiple sclerosis specifically damages myelin throughout the central nervous system. These conditions create inflammation that interferes with nerve signaling and can cause numbness in various body parts including the legs and feet.

Kidney and liver disease allow toxic substances to accumulate in the blood. These toxins damage nerves and can cause uremic neuropathy (from kidney disease) or hepatic neuropathy (from liver disease). Both conditions create progressive numbness, typically starting in the feet.

Practical takeaway: If you have a chronic disease diagnosis, ask your healthcare provider specifically about nerve complications. Understanding which diseases can cause numbness helps you recognize early warning signs and pursue treatment before significant damage occurs.

Lifestyle Factors and Environmental Triggers

Beyond medical conditions, everyday habits and environmental exposures contribute to leg and foot numbness. Understanding these factors gives you insight into what might be causing your symptoms and what you can modify.

Prolonged sitting creates pressure on the sciatic nerve and other nerves running through the legs and buttocks. Office workers, truck drivers, and others who sit for extended periods frequently report numbness. When you sit, the weight of your body compresses the nerves running under and through the buttocks. This is why "falling asleep" of a leg happens—the position cuts off nerve signals temporarily. Regularly changing position and taking breaks from sitting reduces this pressure.

Tight clothing restricts blood flow and compresses nerves. Tight waistbands, restrictive pants, or narrow shoes can press on nerves and blood vessels supplying the legs and feet. Chronic compression from tight clothing can contribute to ongoing numbness. Choosing looser clothing and properly fitting shoes prevents this type of compression.

Alcohol consumption damages nerves through multiple mechanisms. Alcohol is toxic to nerve cells, depletes vitamin B1 (thiamine), and causes malnutrition. People who drink heavily often develop alcoholic neuropathy, characterized by numbness starting in the feet. The damage can be permanent if drinking continues, though some improvement occurs with abstinence and B1 supplementation.
