Understanding Jesus's Teachings About God

Who Jesus Was and His Role as a Teacher

Jesus of Nazareth lived in first-century Palestine and is the central figure of Christianity. According to historical and religious sources, he spent approximately three years traveling through Judea and Galilee teaching about God, morality, and the kingdom of heaven. The four Gospels—Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John—in the New Testament contain accounts of his life and teachings, though scholars note these texts were written 40 to 70 years after his death and reflect the perspectives of early Christian communities.

Jesus taught primarily through speaking directly to crowds and his twelve chosen followers, called disciples. He used various teaching methods including parables (short stories with moral lessons), direct instruction, and questions that encouraged people to think deeply about their beliefs. Unlike many Jewish teachers of his time who focused on interpreting religious law, Jesus emphasized internal transformation and a direct relationship with God. His teachings were radical for his era, challenging social hierarchies and religious practices that were considered normal.

Different Christian traditions interpret Jesus's role differently. Some view him as God's son sent to save humanity, while others see him primarily as a teacher and moral exemplar. Regardless of these theological differences, Jesus's teachings about God remain central to Christian faith and have influenced billions of people across nearly 2,000 years. Understanding what Jesus taught about God requires examining the specific statements and parables recorded in the Gospels and considering the historical and cultural context in which he taught.

Practical Takeaway: When reading about Jesus's teachings, consider that the Gospels represent accounts written by believers after his lifetime. Different Gospel writers emphasize different aspects of Jesus's message, so comparing accounts across Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John provides a fuller picture of what he taught about God.

God as a Loving Father: The Core of Jesus's Message

One of the most distinctive aspects of Jesus's teaching was his presentation of God as a loving, caring father rather than a distant or fearful judge. This concept appears throughout the Gospels and represents a significant shift from how many people in his time understood God. In Matthew 6:25-34, Jesus teaches his followers not to worry about food or clothing, saying that God the Father knows what they need and cares for them. He uses examples from nature—how God feeds the birds of the air and clothes the lilies of the field—to illustrate that God's care extends to all creation.

The Aramaic word Jesus used for God was "Abba," which translates to "Father" and carries connotations of intimacy, closeness, and even tenderness. This was considered somewhat radical because most Jewish people referred to God more formally. By using "Abba," Jesus was suggesting that people could have a personal, intimate relationship with God rather than relating to God only through religious institutions and laws. He encouraged his followers to address God as "Father" in their prayers, teaching them what is now called the Lord's Prayer, which begins with "Our Father."

Jesus illustrated God's love through several parables. The parable of the Prodigal Son (Luke 15:11-32) tells of a father who welcomes back a rebellious son with celebration and forgiveness. The story emphasizes that God's love is not conditional on human performance or achievement. Another parable, the lost sheep (Matthew 18:10-14), describes a shepherd leaving ninety-nine sheep to search for one lost sheep, suggesting that God cares deeply about each individual person and values those who are lost or marginalized.

This vision of God as loving father also meant that Jesus taught forgiveness as a fundamental religious obligation. In Matthew 18:21-22, Peter asks how many times he should forgive someone, and Jesus responds that forgiveness should be unlimited. He based this teaching on the idea that God has forgiven humans, and therefore humans should forgive each other. This represented a different approach than some contemporary religious teachings that emphasized punishment for wrongdoing.

Practical Takeaway: Jesus's emphasis on God as a caring father highlights that in his teaching, relationship with God is personal and based on trust rather than on fear or rigid rule-following. This concept shapes how different Christian denominations understand prayer, forgiveness, and spiritual growth.

God's Kingdom: What Jesus Taught About God's Plans and Future

A central theme in Jesus's teaching was the kingdom of God (or kingdom of heaven, as Matthew's Gospel often calls it). Jesus spoke about this concept frequently, and understanding what he meant is important to understanding his view of God. In Mark 1:15, Jesus announces: "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news." This statement suggests that God's kingdom is not only a future reality but is arriving or becoming present through Jesus's ministry.

Jesus taught that God's kingdom operates according to different values than worldly kingdoms. In Matthew 5:3-12, the Beatitudes describe who is blessed in God's kingdom: the poor in spirit, those who mourn, the meek, the hungry for righteousness, the merciful, the pure in heart, the peacemakers, and those persecuted for righteousness. These descriptions overturn conventional ideas about success and status. They suggest that God values humility, compassion, and integrity rather than wealth, power, or social position.

Many of Jesus's parables specifically describe what the kingdom of God is like. The kingdom of God is compared to a mustard seed that grows into a large tree (Matthew 13:31-32), suggesting gradual, organic growth. It is also compared to yeast mixed into dough that causes it to rise (Matthew 13:33), again emphasizing transformation and hidden power. Another parable compares the kingdom to a treasure hidden in a field, so valuable that a person would sell everything to obtain it (Matthew 13:44). These parables suggest that God's kingdom is worth any sacrifice and that it operates through processes of growth and transformation rather than through force or coercion.

Jesus also taught that entering God's kingdom requires a fundamental change in how people live. In Matthew 6:33, he teaches: "Strive first for the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well." This suggests that making God's kingdom the primary focus of life leads to other goods following naturally. The kingdom is not merely a future destination but something that shapes present living—how people treat others, what they value, and how they use their resources.

Practical Takeaway: Jesus's teaching about God's kingdom emphasizes that God's values and plans often contradict what society considers important. His parables about the kingdom suggest understanding God requires rethinking what truly matters in life and recognizing that spiritual transformation often happens gradually through internal change rather than external circumstances.

God's Concern for the Marginalized and Outcasts

Jesus's teachings reveal that God has particular concern for people society had marginalized or rejected. This was demonstrated both in what Jesus taught and in who he spent time with. In Luke 4:18, Jesus quotes the prophet Isaiah to describe his mission: "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free." This statement indicates that Jesus understood God's concern to extend especially toward those suffering or excluded.

Jesus's interactions with specific groups illustrated this teaching. He spent time with tax collectors, who were considered traitors because they collected taxes for the occupying Roman government. He dined with Zacchaeus, a chief tax collector, indicating God's willingness to associate with and include those whom society condemned. He healed on the Sabbath, breaking religious laws to help people in need, suggesting that God's compassion takes priority over institutional rules. He spoke with a Samaritan woman at a well, crossing ethnic and gender boundaries that were considered rigid in his culture.

Jesus's teaching about judgment in Matthew 25:31-46 explicitly connects God's care for the marginalized to spiritual significance. In this passage, Jesus describes a final judgment where people are separated based on how they treated "the least of these"—the hungry, the thirsty, the stranger, the naked, and the prisoner. Those who cared for them are blessed, while those who ignored them face judgment. Jesus is presented as identifying himself with the suffering and marginalized, suggesting that how people treat vulnerable others directly reflects their relationship with God.

The parable of the good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37) further illustrates this principle. In the story, a Jewish man is beaten and left on the
