Turn Off Push Notifications on Your Devices

Understanding Push Notifications and Why You Might Want to Turn Them Off

Push notifications are messages that appear on your device screen, even when you're not actively using an app or website. They pop up as alerts, badges on app icons, or banner notifications to grab your attention. These messages come from applications, websites, social media platforms, news outlets, and other services you've installed or subscribed to. When a notification arrives, it typically produces a sound, vibration, or visual indicator to let you know something has happened—like a new message, a sale at a store, a sports score update, or a reminder about an upcoming event.

Many people find push notifications helpful for staying informed about important updates. However, the constant stream of notifications can become overwhelming. Studies show that the average smartphone user receives dozens of notifications per day, with some users reporting over 100 notifications daily. This volume can interrupt your work, disturb your sleep, drain your battery, and create unnecessary anxiety. Research from the University of California found that it takes an average of 23 minutes to refocus on a task after an interruption. When you're receiving multiple notifications throughout the day, these interruptions add up and significantly impact your productivity and mental well-being.

You might want to turn off push notifications if you're experiencing notification fatigue, struggling to concentrate, finding your phone distracting, or simply prefer a quieter device experience. Some people choose to disable all notifications, while others prefer to keep notifications from important contacts or apps while turning off notifications from less critical services. Understanding how to manage your notifications gives you control over when and how your devices interrupt you.

Practical Takeaway: Before making changes, spend one day tracking which notifications you actually value and which ones you find annoying. This awareness helps you make intentional choices about which notifications to keep and which to disable.

Turning Off Push Notifications on iPhone and iPad

Apple devices use a centralized notification system that lets you control notifications at multiple levels. You can turn off all notifications on your device, disable notifications for specific apps, or customize how individual apps send you notifications. The most direct way to access these settings is through the Settings app, which appears as a gray gear icon on your home screen.

To turn off all notifications on an iPhone or iPad, open Settings and tap "Notifications." At the top of this screen, you'll see an option for "Allow Notifications." Toggling this off will disable all push notifications from all apps on your device. However, most people prefer to keep notifications from certain apps while disabling others. To do this, scroll down through the list of installed apps in the Notifications settings. Each app has its own entry where you can toggle notifications on or off, and also customize how that specific app sends notifications.

When you tap on an individual app in Notifications settings, you'll see several customization options. "Allow Notifications" toggles that app's notifications on or off completely. Below that, you can choose "Lock Screen," "Notification Center," or "Banners" to specify where notifications appear. You can also set a "Notification Sound" for that app, choose whether badges appear on the app icon showing unread items, and decide whether notifications show a preview of their content. Some apps offer a "Critical Alerts" option, which bypasses the Do Not Disturb setting for truly urgent messages. The "Group Notifications" option lets you choose whether multiple notifications from the same app appear separately or stacked together.

An additional feature called "Scheduled Summary" bundles notifications from selected apps and delivers them at a specific time you choose—like 9 AM or 6 PM—rather than throughout the day. This significantly reduces interruptions while still keeping you informed. To set this up, go to Notifications settings, select an app, scroll down, and toggle on "Time Sensitive Notifications" or "Scheduled Summary" depending on your iOS version.

Practical Takeaway: Start by organizing notifications into three categories: apps you want notifications from immediately, apps you'd prefer to hear from in a scheduled summary, and apps you want to disable completely. Implement these changes gradually over a few days so you can adjust and make sure you're not missing important information.

Managing Push Notifications on Android Devices

Android devices from manufacturers like Samsung, Google, OnePlus, and others follow similar principles to Apple but with some differences in how you access these settings. The notification system on Android is flexible and provides numerous ways to customize your notification experience. Like iPhone, you can manage notifications globally or on a per-app basis, and you can customize how each app notifies you.

To access notification settings on most Android devices, open Settings and look for "Apps," "Applications," or "Notifications" depending on your device model and Android version. From there, you can view all installed apps and access individual app settings. Alternatively, you can long-press on an app icon directly from your home screen or app drawer, which will show a menu with an option to access notification settings for that specific app. You can also open your notification panel by swiping down from the top of your screen twice, then look for a settings gear icon or "Notification Settings" option.

When you enter an app's notification settings, you'll typically see options to toggle notifications completely on or off for that app. You can also set the notification importance level, which determines how the notification behaves. High importance notifications display as pop-ups or banners and make sounds or vibrations. Medium importance notifications appear silently in your notification panel. Low importance notifications may not show any visual or audio alert at all. Many apps also let you customize which specific types of notifications you receive—for example, you might want email notifications but not promotional notifications from the same app.

Android offers a feature called "Do Not Disturb" that silences notifications during specific times you set. You can access this in Settings under "Sound and Vibration" or "Notifications." You can schedule Do Not Disturb to activate automatically during your sleep hours or during work hours, and you can set exceptions for notifications from starred contacts or specific apps you designate as priority. Some Android devices also offer a "Focus Mode" or "Digital Wellbeing" feature that lets you pause app notifications or limit app usage during specific periods.

Practical Takeaway: Use your Android device's Do Not Disturb scheduling feature to create notification-free windows during your sleep time and peak work hours, while still allowing emergency calls or messages from important contacts to come through.

Controlling Notifications from Web Browsers

Beyond your phone or tablet, you may receive push notifications from websites through your web browser. These are notifications that appear on your desktop or laptop computer, and they come from websites you've visited that requested permission to send notifications. Your browser stores these permission settings and manages which websites can send you notifications. This is different from app notifications because these permissions exist within your browser rather than being managed by your device's operating system.

Most modern browsers—including Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge, and Opera—support website push notifications. When you visit a website for the first time, it may display a prompt asking for permission to send notifications. You'll see a message like "Would you like to receive notifications from this website?" If you click "Allow," the website can send you notifications going forward. If you click "Block," the website cannot send notifications. The key point is that this permission is specific to that website and your browser, not shared across all your browsers.

To manage notification permissions in Chrome on a computer, click the three vertical dots menu in the upper right corner, then go to Settings, and select "Privacy and Security" followed by "Site Settings" and "Notifications." Here you'll see lists of websites you've allowed or blocked for notifications. You can toggle any permission on or off, remove permissions entirely, or set Chrome to always ask before allowing notifications. Firefox uses a similar system—go to Settings, Privacy and Security, scroll to "Permissions," and click "Settings" next to "Notifications" to manage these permissions. In Safari on Mac, go to System Preferences, Websites, and Notifications to see and manage notification settings for each website.

You can also manage notifications directly from the notifications themselves. When a notification pops up, you can usually right-click or access a menu within that notification to see options for that website's future notifications. This is often faster than digging through settings when you realize a particular website's notifications are annoying. Additionally, you can disable all website notifications in your browser settings entirely if you don't want any website notifications at all.

Practical Takeaway: Periodically review your browser's notification permissions (monthly is reasonable) and remove permissions from websites whose notifications you no longer find useful. This prevents notification clutter from building
