Working in the oil change industry involves hands-on automotive maintenance work. Technicians perform tasks including draining old oil, replacing oil filters, checking fluid levels, and installing new oil according to manufacturer specifications. The work is physically demanding and requires attention to detail, as proper oil changes are essential for vehicle engine health. Unlike larger automotive repair shops that handle major repairs, quick-service oil change businesses focus on routine maintenance that most vehicle owners need annually or every few months.

Career opportunities at Take 5 span from entry-level positions to management roles. Entry-level technicians typically earn between $22,000 and $28,000 annually, depending on location and experience. Shift supervisors and assistant managers earn between $28,000 and $35,000, while store managers can earn $35,000 to $50,000 or more depending on store performance and location. These figures represent national averages based on industry labor data and vary significantly by geographic region and individual store profitability.

The oil change industry has shown steady demand. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, automotive service technician and mechanic positions are expected to see modest growth through 2032. Quick-service oil change facilities represent a specific segment within this broader field. Many people enter this industry as their first job or as a stepping stone toward other automotive careers involving diesel mechanics, heavy equipment maintenance, or general automotive repair.

Practical Takeaway: Before pursuing a position at Take 5, research specific locations in your area to learn about typical shift schedules, store hours, and local wage rates. Speak with current or former employees to understand the day-to-day work environment.

Entry-Level Technician Positions and Requirements

Take 5 Oil Change hires entry-level technicians who perform the core work of the business. These positions typically require no prior automotive experience, though mechanical aptitude and attention to detail are valued traits. Most locations require applicants to be at least 18 years old and possess a high school diploma or equivalent. A valid driver's license is standard, as technicians may move customer vehicles within the service bay.

Entry-level technicians begin their employment through an on-the-job training program that covers the company's specific procedures and safety protocols. Training usually lasts one to two weeks and includes classroom instruction combined with hands-on work under the supervision of experienced staff. Trainees learn the company's safety standards, including proper use of equipment, handling of used oil and fluids, and procedures for protecting customer vehicles and personal safety. New technicians work alongside experienced staff before handling customer vehicles independently.

Responsibilities of entry-level technicians include draining used oil from customer vehicles, replacing oil filters, checking and topping off other fluids such as windshield washer fluid and coolant, and inspecting belts and hoses. Technicians also clean windshields, check tire pressure, and note any visible maintenance issues for the service advisor to discuss with customers. The work occurs in a service bay with hydraulic lifts that raise vehicles to allow access underneath. Technicians use hand tools and power tools to complete tasks efficiently within the quick-service model.

Physical demands are significant. Technicians spend most of their shift standing and moving, reaching under vehicles, and working with tools. The work involves exposure to used motor oil, grease, and other automotive fluids. Proper personal protective equipment including uniforms, safety glasses, and gloves are provided and required. The fast-paced environment means technicians may service ten to fifteen vehicles per shift, depending on store traffic and efficiency.

The position can serve as an introduction to automotive work. Some technicians use entry-level experience to pursue additional training in related fields. Vocational schools and community colleges offer automotive service technician programs that take one to two years to complete. Others may pursue manufacturer-specific certifications in transmission service, air conditioning repair, or other specializations.

Practical Takeaway: If considering an entry-level technician role, observe a location during business hours to understand the pace and physical demands. Ask about the training schedule and whether the store offers flexible hours for those pursuing additional education.

Service Advisor and Customer-Facing Roles

Service advisors represent the customer-facing side of Take 5 operations. These roles involve greeting customers, explaining services, processing payments, and addressing customer concerns. Service advisors work in the front office area and interact with every customer that comes through the drive-through. The position requires strong communication skills, basic math competency, and the ability to remain calm during busy periods. Most locations require high school diploma or equivalent and basic computer proficiency for operating point-of-sale systems.

Service advisor responsibilities include checking customers in, explaining the oil change service and available options, answering questions about vehicle maintenance, processing credit card and cash payments, and providing receipts. Advisors may suggest additional services such as air filter replacement, fluid top-offs, or other maintenance items based on observations made by technicians during the service. They track customer vehicle information and create records for repeat customers. During busy periods, advisors may handle multiple customers and phone calls simultaneously while maintaining accuracy and courtesy.

Pay for service advisor positions typically ranges from $20,000 to $26,000 annually, depending on location and experience. Some locations offer commission structures where advisors earn additional compensation based on services sold. This creates potential for higher earnings at high-volume stores, though base salary remains the primary compensation component. Customer service experience from retail, food service, or hospitality industries is often valued when hiring service advisors.

The role requires understanding basic automotive maintenance concepts to communicate effectively with customers. While technicians perform the actual work, advisors explain what services are being performed and why they may be needed. A service advisor might explain that an older air filter reduces fuel efficiency or that low transmission fluid could indicate a potential problem. This education role helps customers understand maintenance schedules and make informed decisions about their vehicles.

Career progression from service advisor to shift supervisor or store management is common within the company. Advisors who demonstrate strong sales skills, customer service ability, and reliability often move into leadership positions. Some advisors combine this experience with automotive training to transition into technician roles, while others pursue management tracks.

Practical Takeaway: If you have customer service experience from other industries, emphasize this background when contacting Take 5 about service advisor positions. Ask about sales metrics and commission structures at specific locations to understand earning potential.

Shift Supervisor and Assistant Manager Opportunities

Shift supervisors and assistant managers represent the first step into leadership within Take 5 locations. These positions typically involve overseeing daily operations during scheduled shifts, ensuring service quality, managing staff scheduling, and addressing customer issues. Candidates for these roles usually have at least one to two years of experience in an entry-level position at Take 5 or similar automotive service environment. Some external hires with relevant management experience in other industries may also be considered.

Responsibilities for shift supervisors and assistant managers include opening or closing the store depending on assigned shift, ensuring all staff members are performing duties correctly, troubleshooting equipment problems, managing customer complaints, handling cash and payment processing, and training new technicians or service advisors. These roles involve roughly 50 percent hands-on work alongside technicians and 50 percent administrative and supervisory duties. During high-volume periods, supervisors may return to performing technical work while monitoring overall operations.

Compensation for shift supervisors and assistant managers typically ranges from $28,000 to $35,000 annually. Some positions include bonus structures tied to store performance metrics such as customer satisfaction scores, sales targets, or operational efficiency. Benefits often include health insurance options, paid time off, and potentially a 401(k) retirement plan, though specific offerings vary by location and company policies. A few locations may offer additional perks such as vehicle discount programs or employee referral bonuses.

Key competencies for these roles include leadership ability, problem-solving under pressure, and basic business understanding. Supervisors must make decisions about scheduling, inventory management, and customer service issues. They track performance metrics, maintain cleanliness and safety standards, and ensure compliance with company procedures and local health regulations. Written and verbal
