Stop Junk Mail Before It Arrives Guide

Understanding What Junk Mail Is and Why It Arrives

Junk mail—also called unsolicited mail, bulk mail, or advertising mail—refers to promotional materials and offers that arrive at your mailbox without your request. This includes catalogs, credit card offers, insurance quotes, real estate flyers, restaurant coupons, and other marketing materials from companies trying to reach potential customers. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the average American receives about 41 pounds of junk mail per year, with only about 5% of it being opened and read. The rest typically ends up in the trash.

Companies obtain mailing lists through several methods. Some purchase your information from data brokers—companies that collect and sell personal information from public records, past purchases, and online activities. Others get your name from warranty cards you fill out, subscriptions you've signed up for, or surveys you've completed. When you move to a new address and file a change of address form with the Post Office, that information can be sold to marketing companies. Retailers and service providers may also sell customer information to third parties unless you specifically request otherwise.

Mail marketers use demographic targeting to identify who they think might want their products. They look for factors like age, income level, homeownership status, and purchase history. Someone who recently bought a house might receive multiple offers for home improvement services, insurance, and moving companies. Young professionals might get credit card offers and investment materials. Parents with young children often see catalogs for children's products and educational services.

Understanding this process matters because it shows you have options for stopping mail at the source. You're not dealing with random chance—specific companies have chosen to send you these materials based on information they hold about you. By taking action with the right organizations, you can reduce or stop the flow of unsolicited mail reaching your address.

Practical Takeaway: Junk mail is sent because companies believe your demographic profile suggests you might purchase their products. Most junk mail comes from data brokers selling your information or from companies you've interacted with in the past. Knowing this helps you understand where to direct your efforts to stop unwanted mail.

Using the Mail Preference Service to Reduce Marketing Mail

The Mail Preference Service (MPS) is a program run by the Data & Marketing Association (DMA), a trade organization for the direct marketing industry. This service allows you to register your name and address to request that marketers stop sending you unsolicited mail offers. When you register with MPS, participating companies in their network agree to remove your name from their mailing lists. However, it's important to understand that MPS is a voluntary program—not every company participates, and those who do aren't legally required to honor requests immediately.

You can register with the Mail Preference Service in two ways. The first is online through their website at dmachoice.com. You can create an account, enter your mailing address, and manage your preferences for different types of mail. The online registration typically takes effect within a few weeks. The second method is through mail—you can send a letter to the Mail Preference Service address requesting removal from mailing lists. Include your full name, complete mailing address, and a note requesting that your name be removed from mailing lists. Send this letter to: Mail Preference Service, DMA Choice, 225 Reinekers Lane, Alexandria, VA 22314.

The process works by having participating marketers cross-reference their mailing lists against the MPS database. When your name and address are in the system, companies that check the list will see you've requested to not receive marketing mail and remove you from their outgoing shipments. This can reduce credit card offers, insurance quotes, financial services offers, and other types of marketing mail by an estimated 75% or more. Results typically appear within 3 to 6 months, though some people report seeing changes in 1 to 2 months.

Keep in mind that MPS does not stop all junk mail. Mail from companies you've done business with in the past may continue, since they consider themselves relationship mail rather than unsolicited marketing. Nonprofit organizations, political campaigns, and local businesses often don't participate in MPS. Some national companies also choose not to participate. Additionally, MPS registrations typically last three years before you need to renew them, so mark your calendar to reregister when your term is about to expire.

Practical Takeaway: Register with the Mail Preference Service through dmachoice.com or by mail to reduce national marketing mail by a significant amount. Expect results within a few months, and plan to renew your registration every three years to maintain the reduction in junk mail.

Opting Out of Credit Card and Insurance Offers

Credit card offers represent one of the largest categories of junk mail received by Americans. According to consumer research, households with good credit scores receive an average of 6 to 10 credit card offers per year. Banks and credit card companies purchase lists of pre-screened consumers from credit bureaus and data brokers. These pre-screened offers happen because the Fair Credit Reporting Act allows credit bureaus to sell consumer information for marketing purposes, though it also gives you a right to opt out of this practice.

To stop receiving prescreened credit card and insurance offers, you can contact the nationwide consumer reporting agencies that provide this information. There are two ways to do this. The first is to call 1-888-5-OPTOUT (1-888-567-8688). This is the official phone number maintained by the major credit bureaus. When you call, you can choose to opt out for five years or permanently. The call takes just a few minutes—you'll provide your personal information and indicate your preference. The bureaus use this information to add your name to their opt-out list, and they stop selling your name to credit card companies and insurance companies almost immediately.

The second method is to visit optoutprescreen.com, the official website for prescreened offer opt-outs. On this site, you can fill out an online form providing your name, address, date of birth, and Social Security number (this information is requested to verify your identity and ensure only you can make changes to your preferences). You'll select whether you want to opt out for five years or permanently. After you submit the form, the major credit bureaus—Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion—receive your request within a few business days.

It's important to note that opting out of prescreened offers does not affect your credit score or your ability to apply for credit. It simply removes you from the lists that companies use to send unsolicited offers. Some marketing mail may still arrive from companies offering special programs to existing customers or from companies that use different marketing channels. However, the volume of credit card and insurance offers typically drops significantly—many people report receiving very few offers after opting out.

Practical Takeaway: Call 1-888-567-8688 or visit optoutprescreen.com to stop receiving prescreened credit card and insurance offers. You can opt out for five years or permanently. This action is separate from other junk mail efforts and specifically targets the largest source of many people's unsolicited mail.

Requesting Removal from Company Mailing Lists

Beyond the national programs, you can contact individual companies directly to request removal from their mailing lists. This approach works well for catalogs you've received, companies you've done business with, and organizations sending you repeated offers. Start by reviewing the mail you receive to identify the sources. Many pieces of junk mail include contact information, either on the envelope itself or on the marketing material inside. Some include small cards that say "To remove from future mailings, call..." or "Visit [website] to manage your preferences."

For catalog companies, most include a phone number or website where you can request removal from their mailing list. When you call, have your mailing address ready and ask to be removed from their mailing list entirely. For online retailers and subscription services, look for an account settings page or preferences section where you can adjust communication options. Many websites now have an option to manage marketing preferences that allows you to opt out of physical mail while keeping your account active for online purchases.

If the mail doesn't include obvious contact information, you can find company contact details through an internet search. Search for "[Company Name] mailing list removal" or "[Company Name] catalog removal" to find their specific process. Some large companies have dedicated customer service lines for managing preferences. For example, major retailers often maintain opt-out programs for their marketing catalogs. Write down each company's removal request—some take 4 to 8 weeks to process, so keeping
