Signs Your First Period Is Coming

Physical Changes in Your Body

One of the earliest signs that your first period may be coming is noticing changes in your body. These physical changes happen because your hormone levels are shifting as your body prepares for menstruation. Most girls begin their period between ages 12 and 13, though it can happen earlier or later. Understanding what to expect helps you recognize these changes when they occur.

Breast development and tenderness is often one of the first signs. Your breasts may feel sore, swollen, or tender to the touch in the weeks or months before your period starts. This happens because hormones called estrogen and progesterone are increasing. The tenderness might feel similar to a dull ache or sensitivity when you wear certain shirts. This breast development can last for several years as your body continues to mature.

Body hair growth is another physical change you may notice. You might see hair starting to grow in new places, including under your arms, on your legs, and in your pubic area. This hair tends to be darker and thicker than the fine hair you may have had before. The amount and rate of hair growth varies greatly from person to person. Some girls notice this hair growth years before their first period, while for others it happens closer to the time menstruation begins.

Changes in your skin can also occur. Some girls develop acne or oily skin as hormone levels shift. You might notice small bumps or pimples appearing on your face, back, or chest. This happens because oil glands in the skin become more active. Keeping your face clean and using gentle skincare products can help manage these changes. It's worth noting that skin changes often continue throughout the teenage years.

Practical takeaway: Start keeping track of physical changes you notice in your body. Write down when you see new hair growth, breast changes, or skin changes along with the date. This creates a personal timeline that can help you recognize patterns and anticipate when your period might arrive. Many girls find it helpful to mark these observations on a calendar or in a notes app on their phone.

Emotional and Mood Changes

Your emotions and mood may shift noticeably in the weeks or days before your period arrives. These changes are caused by fluctuations in hormones, particularly progesterone and serotonin levels. Understanding that these mood changes are normal and temporary can help you manage them better. Research shows that about 75% of menstruating people experience some mood changes related to their cycle.

Many girls report feeling more irritable or "moody" before their period. You might find yourself getting frustrated more easily about things that normally wouldn't bother you much. Small annoyances might feel bigger than they are. You could have arguments with friends or family members over minor issues, or feel snappy when people talk to you. This irritability typically lasts a few days to a week before menstruation begins and goes away once your period starts or shortly after.

Sadness or feeling down is another common emotional sign. You might feel unexpectedly tearful, sad, or depressed without having a specific reason. Movies, songs, or stories that wouldn't normally make you cry might suddenly make you emotional. This sadness typically isn't a sign of depression but rather a temporary mood shift related to hormone changes. The feelings usually improve within a few days after your period starts.

Anxiety or nervousness can also increase before your period. You might feel worried about things you normally handle fine, or feel on edge without knowing exactly why. Some girls describe feeling restless or unable to relax. Difficulty concentrating at school or focusing on homework sometimes accompanies this anxiety. These feelings are temporary and should decrease once menstruation begins.

Emotional fatigue or feeling overwhelmed is another possibility. Everything might feel more difficult or stressful than usual. You might want more alone time or feel less interested in activities you normally enjoy. Some girls describe this as feeling emotionally drained. This temporary withdrawal from social activities is normal and typically passes quickly.

Practical takeaway: When you notice strong mood changes, remind yourself that they may be related to your upcoming period. This awareness can help prevent conflicts with friends and family. If you feel irritable or sad, try giving yourself grace and not being hard on yourself. Talking to a trusted adult about mood changes can help you feel more prepared. Many girls find that deep breathing, physical activity, or time with supportive friends helps during these emotional shifts.

Changes in Appetite and Food Cravings

Shifts in what and how much you want to eat can be a sign that your period is approaching. Hormonal changes affect not just your mood but also your appetite and food preferences. Many people experience noticeable changes in eating patterns in the days or weeks before menstruation begins. These changes are completely normal and happen to the majority of menstruating people at some point.

Increased appetite or feeling hungrier than usual is one of the most common signs. You might find yourself wanting to eat larger portions at meals or snacking more frequently throughout the day. This increased hunger can feel quite strong and persistent. Some girls report feeling hungry even shortly after eating a full meal. This happens because your body needs more calories during this part of your cycle as your metabolism increases slightly.

Specific food cravings are extremely common before a period. Many girls crave sweet foods like chocolate, candy, or sugary snacks. Others crave salty foods like chips or pretzels. Some people want heavier foods like pasta, bread, or fried foods. Cravings for chocolate are so common that researchers have studied them specifically—studies show that up to 97% of women experience food cravings before their period at some point in their lives. These cravings make sense because the foods people crave often contain substances that temporarily boost mood or energy.

Loss of appetite occasionally happens to some people instead of increased hunger. You might feel less interested in eating or have a smaller appetite than normal. Some girls report that foods they normally enjoy don't appeal to them, or that they feel full more quickly. This is less common than increased appetite but still a normal variation in how people's bodies respond to hormonal changes.

Food sensitivity or nausea can occur in some cases. Certain foods might upset your stomach or taste different than they normally do. Some girls feel slightly queasy or experience mild nausea. This is usually mild and temporary. Eating smaller, more frequent meals and drinking plenty of water can help manage these symptoms.

Practical takeaway: Plan ahead for appetite changes by having nutritious snacks available. Keep options like fruit, nuts, yogurt, cheese, and whole grain crackers on hand. If you crave chocolate or sweets, having some available means you can satisfy the craving without keeping only unhealthy options around. Stay hydrated by drinking water throughout the day, as this helps manage both cravings and overall wellness. Tracking when cravings happen helps you recognize the pattern and know when your period might be coming.

Sleep Changes and Energy Levels

Alterations in how you sleep and your overall energy levels often occur before your first period arrives. Hormonal shifts affect your body's sleep-wake cycle and can influence how tired or energized you feel. Recognizing these sleep and energy changes helps you understand your body better and plan accordingly. Many girls notice these changes are among the most obvious signs that their period is approaching.

Excessive tiredness or fatigue is very common in the days or week before menstruation. You might feel worn out even after getting normal amounts of sleep. Activities that usually feel manageable might suddenly feel exhausting. Getting up in the morning might be harder than normal. You might find yourself needing to nap during the afternoon or wanting to go to bed earlier than usual. This fatigue is real and not something you should push through without giving your body the rest it needs.

Difficulty sleeping or insomnia can happen to some people. You might have trouble falling asleep even though you feel tired, or you might wake up multiple times during the night and have trouble falling back asleep. Your sleep might feel light or restless rather than deep and refreshing. Some girls have racing thoughts at night that make it hard to settle down. These sleep problems are usually temporary and improve once your period starts.

Increased energy or restlessness is another possibility that some people experience. Rather than feeling tired, you might feel wound up, energetic, or like you have nervous energy. You might feel like you need to move around or exercise but then feel frustrated that you can't fully settle into activities. This restlessness can make it hard to concentrate at school or sit through classes.
