Send Money With a Credit Card Using Western Union

How Western Union Credit Card Transfers Work

Western Union allows you to send money using a credit card as your payment method. Unlike sending money from a bank account, using a credit card means the funds come directly from your card's available credit rather than your checking or savings account. This process involves several steps, and understanding how it works can help you make informed decisions about whether this method suits your needs.

When you initiate a transfer with a credit card at Western Union, the company processes your card information through their payment system. The credit card acts as the funding source for the money order or transfer you're sending. Western Union accepts major credit cards including Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and Discover at most locations and through their online platform.

The transaction flow works like this: You visit a Western Union agent location or go online, select your transfer amount, provide recipient details, and choose to pay with your credit card. The agent or online system processes the card, assigns a reference number to your transfer, and provides you with a receipt. The recipient can then collect the funds using that reference number at any Western Union location worldwide, or in some cases, the money can be delivered directly to their bank account or mobile wallet.

One important distinction: Using a credit card with Western Union means you're borrowing money from your credit card company temporarily. You'll need to pay your credit card bill later, just like any other credit card purchase. The transaction appears on your credit card statement, and interest may apply if you carry a balance. This differs from using a debit card, where funds are withdrawn immediately from your bank account.

The timing of the transfer depends on the delivery method you select. Cash pickups at Western Union locations typically occur within minutes to hours. Bank deposits may take one to three business days depending on the receiving bank. Mobile wallet transfers can be even faster, sometimes completing within hours in certain countries.

Practical Takeaway: Before using your credit card with Western Union, understand that you're creating a debt on your card that you'll need to repay. Check your credit limit to ensure you have enough available credit for the transfer amount, and consider the interest rate you'll pay if you can't pay off the charge immediately.

Fees and Costs Associated With Credit Card Transfers

Western Union charges fees for money transfers, and these fees vary based on several factors including the amount being sent, the destination country, the delivery method, and how you pay. When using a credit card specifically, you may encounter additional costs beyond the standard transfer fee. Understanding the complete cost picture helps you determine if this method makes financial sense for your situation.

Standard Western Union transfer fees typically range from $3 to $50 or more, depending on the transfer amount and destination. For example, sending $100 domestically might cost around $3 to $10, while sending $500 internationally could cost $20 to $50. The company uses a tiered fee structure where larger amounts generally have proportionally lower fees, though the absolute dollar amount increases.

When you use a credit card instead of cash or a debit card, some Western Union locations may charge an additional processing fee. This card processing fee can range from $0.50 to $3 or more per transaction. Some locations and payment methods may not charge this extra fee, so it's worth asking before completing your transaction. Online transfers through Western Union's website may have different fee structures than in-person transfers at agent locations.

Beyond Western Union's fees, you need to consider costs from your credit card company. If you can't pay off the transfer immediately, interest will accrue on the balance. Credit card interest rates typically range from 15% to 25% annually, though some cards offer lower promotional rates. For a $500 transfer that costs $25 in Western Union fees, you'd owe $525 total. If you carry this balance for a month at 20% annual interest, you'd pay approximately $8.75 in interest charges. Over several months, this interest compounds significantly.

Some credit cards offer cash advance fees, which apply when you use your card to access cash or cash-like products. Western Union transfers might be classified as cash advances by your card company, triggering these additional fees. Cash advance fees are typically 3% to 5% of the transaction amount, with a minimum fee of $5 to $10. This means a $500 transfer could trigger a $15 to $25 cash advance fee on top of Western Union's charges.

Exchange rates matter for international transfers. Western Union applies an exchange rate to currency conversions, and this rate is typically less favorable than the mid-market rate you'd see in financial news. The difference, called the markup, represents additional cost to you. Depending on the currency pair, this markup can range from 2% to 7% of your transfer amount.

Practical Takeaway: Calculate the total cost before sending. Add Western Union's transfer fee, any credit card processing fee, potential cash advance fees, interest charges if you won't pay the balance immediately, and exchange rate markups. Compare this total to alternative methods like bank transfers, peer-to-peer payment apps, or other money transfer services to determine the most cost-effective option for your specific transfer.

Step-by-Step Process for Sending Money With Your Credit Card

The process for sending money through Western Union with a credit card differs slightly depending on whether you use an in-person agent location or the online platform. Both methods are straightforward, but knowing the specific steps helps you complete your transfer correctly and avoid delays or errors.

For In-Person Transfers at Western Union Agent Locations:

• Locate a nearby Western Union agent. You can find these at many grocery stores, pharmacies, check-cashing services, and dedicated Western Union offices. Use the Western Union location finder on their website or call 1-800-448-1492 to find the nearest agent.
• Bring a valid government-issued photo ID. Western Union requires identification for all transactions as part of their anti-money laundering compliance procedures. This can be a driver's license, passport, state ID, or military ID.
• Provide the recipient's information to the agent. You'll need the recipient's full name, and for cash pickups, you can either provide their Western Union Money Transfer Control Number (MTCN) or they can pick up using your name and ID information. For bank deposits or mobile wallet transfers, you'll need additional details like their bank account number or mobile number.
• Tell the agent your transfer amount and that you want to pay with a credit card. The agent will confirm the fees and the total amount you'll be charged to your card.
• Provide your credit card to the agent. They'll run the card through their payment terminal, similar to any retail purchase. You may be asked to enter your PIN or sign a receipt, depending on the card type and terminal.
• Receive your receipt and the MTCN (reference number). This 10-digit number is crucial—it's how the recipient will collect the money. Keep this receipt safe and share the MTCN with your recipient through a secure method, separate from sharing the amount being sent.

For Online Transfers Through Western Union's Website or Mobile App:

• Visit Western Union's website (westernunion.com) or open their mobile app. Create an account if you don't have one, or sign into your existing account with your email and password.
• Click on "Send Money" or the equivalent option on the platform. You'll be guided through a series of questions about who you're sending to and where they are located.
• Enter the recipient's details. This includes their full name and the country where they'll collect the money. For some delivery methods, you'll need their bank account information or phone number.
• Specify the amount you want to send. The platform will instantly show you the transfer fee, the exchange rate (if international), and the total amount you'll be charged.
• Select your delivery method. Options typically include cash pickup at a Western Union location, bank deposit to the recipient's account, or mobile money wallet transfer. Processing times vary by method.
• Choose your credit card as the payment method from the available options. Enter your card number, expiration date, and CVV security code if this is your first time using this card on the platform.
• Review all transaction details carefully before confirming. Check the recipient's name, the amount, the fees, and the delivery method.
• Confirm the transfer and receive your MTC
