Reset Your Netgear Router Password Information Guide
Understanding Your Netgear Router and Why Passwords Matter
Your Netgear router is the device that brings internet to every computer, phone, and smart device in your home or small office. It acts like a security gate between your devices and the outside internet. The password that protects your router—called the admin password—is one of the most important passwords you own, though many people don't realize it.

When you set up a new Netgear router, it comes with a default password. This default password is the same on thousands of routers. If someone knows your router model number, they could potentially access your router using that default password. Once inside, they could change your settings, monitor your internet activity, steal your Wi-Fi connection, or cause other problems. This is why changing your router password from the default is so important.
Many people confuse two different passwords. The first is your Wi-Fi password—the one you share with guests so they can connect to your internet. The second is your admin password—the one that controls the router itself. You should change both, but the admin password is the most critical because it protects the entire device.
Netgear routers typically have a default username of "admin" and a default password that varies by model. Some common defaults include "password," a blank password, or a code printed on the router's label. According to cybersecurity data, routers with unchanged default passwords are compromised at rates significantly higher than those with custom passwords.
Practical takeaway: Your router password needs to be strong and different from your Wi-Fi password. Take time to learn about the difference between these two passwords before you begin the reset process.
Locating Your Router's Reset Information and Default Credentials
Before you can reset your Netgear router password, you need to find where the default credentials are stored. Every Netgear router has this information printed somewhere on the device itself or in the documentation that came with it.

The physical router has several labels. On the back of most Netgear routers, you'll find a white or silver sticker that contains important information. This sticker typically includes the model number, serial number, and the default login credentials. The sticker might say something like "Default login: admin" and show a default password. The exact location of this sticker varies—sometimes it's on the back panel, sometimes on the bottom, and sometimes on the side. You may need to turn the router over or move any cables to see it clearly.
If you cannot find the sticker or it's worn away and illegible, check the documentation. Most Netgear routers come with a quick start guide or instruction booklet. This booklet usually includes a section on default settings. If you no longer have the physical booklet, you can find the user manual online by searching for your specific router model number on Netgear's support website.
The router's model number is crucial for finding the right information. You'll see model numbers like R6700, R7000, R8000, RS400, or similar designations. Write down your exact model number because different models sometimes have different default passwords. Once you have the model number, you can search the Netgear support page, and it will show you the default credentials for that specific model.
Some newer Netgear routers use a "routerlogin.net" address to access settings, while older models may use "routerlogin.com" or an IP address like 192.168.1.1. The correct address for your model is also found on the sticker or in the manual.
Practical takeaway: Spend 10 minutes locating your router model number and default login information now. Taking this step first prevents confusion and frustration when you actually begin the reset process.
Accessing Your Router's Admin Panel Through a Web Browser
To reset your Netgear router password, you must access the router's admin panel—the control center where all settings live. This panel is reached through a web browser on any device connected to your network.

Start by opening any web browser on a computer, tablet, or phone that is connected to your router. You can use Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge, or any other browser. In the address bar at the top, type the login address for your specific router. For most Netgear routers made in the last several years, this address is "routerlogin.net" or "routerlogin.com." If neither of these works, you may have an older model that uses the IP address "192.168.1.1" instead. Try each address one at a time.
After typing the address and pressing Enter, you should see a login screen within a few seconds. This screen will have two text boxes—one for username and one for password. The username is almost always "admin" for Netgear routers. In the password field, enter the default password that you found on the sticker or in your documentation.
If the login works, you'll see the router's main dashboard. This page shows information like your network status, connected devices, and various settings options. The dashboard layout differs depending on your router model, but all Netgear routers organize settings in a similar way with menus on the left or top of the screen.
If the login screen rejects your password, the most common reasons are: you've already changed the password and don't remember it, you entered the password incorrectly (these are case-sensitive), or you have an older router model that uses different credentials. If you changed the password previously and cannot remember it, you'll need to perform a factory reset, which is covered in a later section.
Practical takeaway: Open a browser and locate your router's login screen right now, before attempting to change the password. Knowing you can reach this screen first prevents problems during the actual password change.
Steps to Change Your Admin Password in the Settings Menu
Once you're logged into the admin panel, changing your password involves finding the administration or settings section. The exact location varies by router model and software version, but the process is generally straightforward.

Look for a menu labeled "Administration," "Settings," "Advanced," or sometimes "System Settings." On newer Netgear routers with a more modern interface, this may be in the top right corner of the screen or in a hamburger menu (three horizontal lines). Click on this menu to expand it and see the available options.
Within the administration section, locate the option for "Set Password," "Change Password," "Router Password," or "Admin Password." Some older Netgear routers label this as "Router Access." Click on this option to open the password change dialog.
The password change screen will typically ask for three pieces of information. First, you may be asked to enter your current password. Type in the default password that got you into the system. Second, you'll see a field for "New Password." Enter your desired new password here. Third, there's usually a "Confirm Password" or "Retype Password" field where you type your new password again to confirm you didn't make a typo.
When choosing a new password, Netgear recommends passwords that are at least 8 characters long, though many routers support up to 20 characters or more. A stronger password contains a mix of uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols. For example, "NetgearRouter2024!" is stronger than "password123." Avoid using common words or patterns. Write down your new password in a secure location—a password manager, a locked drawer, or a secure note app—so you don't forget it. Unlike account passwords that can sometimes be reset, a forgotten router password often requires a factory reset to recover from.
After entering your new password twice, look for a "Save," "Apply," or "OK" button. Click this button to save your change. The router will process the change, which usually takes a few seconds. You may see a message saying the change was successful or that the router is rebooting. During this reboot, the router temporarily disconnects your devices from the internet, but this is normal and only lasts a minute or so.
Practical takeaway: Create a strong new password before you log into the router. Write it down in a safe place immediately after you've set it successfully.
Changing Your Wi-Fi Password and Network Settings
While you're in the admin panel, this is an ideal time to change your Wi-Fi password as well. This is different from the admin password you just changed, but it
