Remove Your Amazon Credit Card From Your Account

Understanding the Amazon Credit Card and Why You Might Remove It

The Amazon credit card, officially called the Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Card or Amazon Rewards Visa Card depending on your account type, is a co-branded credit card issued by Chase Bank in partnership with Amazon. This card offers rewards on purchases made through Amazon and at other retailers. Understanding what this card does and how it connects to your Amazon account is the first step in deciding whether removal is right for your situation.

Many Amazon customers link their credit card to their account for convenient shopping. When you have a card on file, Amazon remembers your payment method, making checkout faster. However, there are several reasons why someone might choose to remove a credit card from their account. Perhaps you've paid off the card and no longer use it. Maybe you're concerned about storing payment information online and prefer to use a different payment method. You might have upgraded to a newer card and want to clean up your account by removing older payment options. Some people remove cards when they're switching banks or financial institutions. Others simply prefer to maintain minimal payment information stored with online retailers as a privacy practice.

Removing a card from your Amazon account is different from closing the credit card itself with your bank. When you remove the card from Amazon, you're simply telling Amazon to stop storing that particular payment method. The credit card account itself continues to exist with Chase Bank. You can still use that card elsewhere or pay off any remaining balance directly through your bank. This distinction matters because removing the card from Amazon won't affect your credit score or your relationship with Chase—it only changes what payment methods Amazon has on file for you.

Practical takeaway: Before removing your card, identify your reason for doing so. Know that removal from Amazon is separate from closing the card with your bank, and removing payment information from a retailer won't impact your credit history.

Step-by-Step Instructions for Removing Your Card Through Your Computer

Removing your Amazon credit card using a computer or laptop involves accessing your account settings through Amazon's website. This method gives you the clearest view of your stored payment methods and allows you to manage multiple cards if you have them linked to your account.

Start by opening your web browser and going to amazon.com. Sign into your account using your email address or phone number and your password. Once you're logged in, look for the "Account" option, which is typically located in the upper right corner of the page near your name. Click on "Account" to access your account menu. From the dropdown menu that appears, select "Your Account" or look for a link that says "Login & security" or "Accounts & Lists."

Navigate to the payment settings section. You're looking for a page labeled "Manage payment methods," "Your payments," or "Payment options." The exact wording may vary slightly depending on when Amazon last updated their interface, but the concept remains the same. On this page, you'll see a list of all payment methods currently stored on your Amazon account. This might include credit cards, debit cards, bank accounts for Amazon Pay, or other payment options you've added over time.

Find the specific card you want to remove. Amazon displays cards using the last four digits of the card number, the card type (Visa, Mastercard, American Express), and the expiration date. For example, you might see "Visa ending in 4829, expires 08/2026." Locate the card you want to delete. Next to each card, you should see an "Edit" button or a trash/delete icon. Click on the delete option. Amazon may ask you to confirm this action by displaying a message that says something like "Are you sure you want to delete this payment method?" Click "Yes" or "Confirm" to complete the removal.

After deletion, the card will no longer appear in your list of saved payment methods. If you attempt to make a purchase on Amazon and this was your only payment method on file, you'll need to enter a different payment method at checkout. Keep in mind that if you have an active subscription (such as Amazon Prime membership or an Amazon Music subscription) that charges to this card, you'll need to update the payment method for that subscription separately, or your subscription may be interrupted.

Practical takeaway: Use your computer to access Account settings, navigate to payment methods, find your card by the last four digits, and click delete. Confirm when prompted, then verify the card no longer appears in your list.

Removing Your Card Using the Amazon Mobile App

The Amazon mobile app, available for both iPhone and Android devices, allows you to manage your payment methods on the go. The steps are similar to using a computer but with slight differences in navigation to accommodate the app's layout.

Open the Amazon shopping app on your phone and ensure you're logged into your account. Look for the menu icon, which typically appears as three horizontal lines (called a hamburger menu) usually located at the bottom right of the screen on iPhone apps or at the bottom center on Android apps. Tap this menu to open your options. Scroll through the menu options until you find "Account" or "Your Account." Tap on it to enter your account settings.

Within your account section, look for "Your Account," "Login & security," or "Payment options." The app interface changes periodically, but these section names have remained relatively consistent. Tap on the option that relates to payment methods or payment settings. This takes you to a page showing your stored payment information. You'll see the same card display format as the website version—card type, last four digits, and expiration date.

Locate the card you want to remove from your list. Unlike the computer version, the app may display the delete option differently. You might see a trash icon, a three-dot menu icon (⋯), or an "Edit" link. Tap on whichever option appears next to your card. If a menu appears with multiple options, select "Delete" or "Remove." The app will likely ask you to confirm your action. Tap "Yes," "Confirm," or "Delete" depending on the exact wording displayed on your screen.

The card will be removed immediately. Return to your payment methods list to verify that the card no longer appears. The mobile app sometimes requires you to refresh or navigate back and forth to display updated information, so if the card still shows, try exiting the payment settings and re-entering to see the current version of your saved methods.

Practical takeaway: Open the Amazon app, tap the menu icon, go to Your Account, select payment methods, find your card, tap the delete option, and confirm removal. Refresh the page to verify deletion.

What Happens When You Remove Your Card and Managing Subscriptions

Understanding the consequences of removing your card helps you avoid unexpected interruptions in your Amazon services. When you delete a payment method, Amazon can no longer charge that card for purchases or subscriptions, which means you need to have alternative payment methods set up or update your subscriptions accordingly.

If the card you're removing was your primary payment method—the one Amazon uses by default when you make purchases—removing it won't prevent you from shopping. Instead, when you proceed to checkout on your next purchase, Amazon will prompt you to select a different payment method or enter new payment information. You can use another card you have on file, a bank account linked through Amazon Pay, a gift card balance, or even enter a new card's information at that time. This is actually a useful safety feature because it prevents charges from being automatically applied to a card you no longer want to use.

However, subscriptions and recurring charges require special attention. If you're paying for Amazon Prime membership, Amazon Music, Prime Video, or any third-party subscriptions through Amazon (like magazine subscriptions or streaming services), and those subscriptions charge to the card you're about to remove, you must update the payment method for each subscription before deleting the card. Otherwise, your subscription may be interrupted, and you could lose access to these services.

To update subscriptions, go to your account settings and look for "Memberships and Subscriptions" or a similar option. You'll see a list of all active subscriptions and which payment method each one uses. For any subscription charging to the card you want to delete, click on that subscription and update it to charge to a different payment method instead. Only after you've updated all subscriptions should you proceed with removing the card from your account.

Additionally, if you have any pending refunds or transactions that were supposed to post to the card you're removing, those may be delayed or returned to Amazon as unable to process. It's worth checking your recent order history to ensure no refunds are in progress. If you do have pending refunds, consider waiting until they
