The building itself sits along the Tennessee River in a distinctive structure designed by architect Jon Jerde. The design creates two main sections: the River Journey on the lower floors and the Ocean Journey on the upper floors. This layout allows visitors to explore creatures from freshwater environments first, then transition to saltwater exhibits as they move through the building. The architecture uses natural lighting and water features throughout, creating an immersive experience that reflects both the indoor and outdoor environments of Chattanooga.

Understanding the aquarium's layout and offerings helps you plan a visit that matches your interests and available time. The facility operates year-round, though visiting during different seasons offers different experiences. Winter months tend to have smaller crowds, while summer vacation periods bring families from across the region. The aquarium employs over 300 staff members and maintains partnerships with various conservation organizations to support research and education about aquatic life.

Practical takeaway: Before planning your visit, spend time on the Tennessee Aquarium's official website to review current exhibits, special events, and any temporary closures or changes to operations. This information helps you decide which sections matter most to your group and how much time to allocate for your visit.

One of the signature exhibits in the River Journey is the Tennessee River system display, which showcases native species that live in and around the river that flows through Chattanooga. Visitors can observe catfish, sturgeon, turtles, and other animals that inhabit this important waterway. Another notable section features the Amazon River environment, with exhibits of piranhas, anacondas, river dolphins, and other creatures from South American rainforest rivers. The Southeast Asia rivers section displays freshwater rays, giant catfish, and creatures adapted to tropical river systems.

Interactive elements throughout the River Journey allow visitors to participate in learning activities. Touch tanks where visitors can feel certain species like stingrays and starfish are positioned throughout the section. Educational signage provides information about the animals' behavior, diet, habitat needs, and conservation status. Video displays and interactive screens offer additional details about specific species or ecosystems. Staff members are stationed throughout to answer questions and share information about the creatures on display.

The River Journey also features a section focused on the life cycles and behaviors of various freshwater species. Exhibits explain how fish migrate, how they adapt to seasonal changes, and how pollution and habitat loss affect river ecosystems. This educational approach helps visitors understand not just what the creatures look like, but how they live and why protecting their habitats matters.

Practical takeaway: Plan to spend at least 2-3 hours exploring the River Journey section. Start at the top level and work your way down, which creates a natural flow through the exhibits and helps you pace your visit without backtracking.

Discovering the Ocean Journey Exhibits

The Ocean Journey section features saltwater creatures and marine ecosystems from around the world's oceans. This portion of the aquarium displays jellyfish, sea turtles, sharks, rays, seahorses, and hundreds of other marine species. One of the most notable exhibits is the Blacktip Reef Shark tank, which features multiple species of sharks native to coral reef environments. The large tank allows visitors to observe these creatures in a setting that mimics their natural habitat. Another signature exhibit is the Jellyfish gallery, which displays various jellyfish species in specialized tanks with lighting designed to showcase their translucent bodies and bioluminescent qualities. Information displays explain how sea turtles face threats from fishing nets, plastic pollution, and habitat loss. The aquarium works with conservation partners to rescue injured turtles and rehabilitate them for release back into the ocean. Visitors can observe turtles undergoing rehabilitation and learn about how they can help protect these creatures.

The Ocean Journey also features an interactive section where visitors can learn about deep ocean creatures that live in darkness thousands of feet below the surface. Exhibits explain bioluminescence, pressure adaptations, and other characteristics of deep-sea life. A section on coral reefs educates visitors about reef ecosystems, the diversity of life they support, and the threats they face from climate change and pollution. Another area focuses on ocean conservation, discussing sustainable fishing practices and marine protected areas.

Practical takeaway: Allocate another 2-3 hours for the Ocean Journey exhibits. The large shark tank and jellyfish gallery are popular spots that may have crowds, so visit these areas during less busy times of day if possible, or plan to return to them after exploring other sections.
