Learn Where to Find Your Taxpayer ID Number

Understanding Your Taxpayer ID Number and Why It Matters

A Taxpayer ID Number is a unique nine-digit identifier that the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) assigns to individuals and entities for tax purposes. This number appears on tax documents, W-2 forms, 1099 forms, and other official correspondence from the IRS. Understanding what this number is and why you need it forms the foundation for locating it when required.

For most U.S. citizens and permanent residents, the Taxpayer ID Number is your Social Security Number (SSN). The Social Security Administration assigns this number when you're born or when you first become eligible to work in the United States. Your SSN serves dual purposes—it's your Social Security identifier and your primary tax identification number. However, not everyone uses an SSN as their Taxpayer ID. Some individuals and business entities use an Employer Identification Number (EIN) instead, which is a nine-digit number that the IRS issues to businesses, trusts, estates, and certain non-citizens who cannot obtain an SSN.

The IRS uses your Taxpayer ID Number to track your income, monitor tax filings, process refunds, and maintain your tax history. Financial institutions, employers, and other entities report information to the IRS using your Taxpayer ID Number. This is why having access to your correct number is essential when filing taxes, claiming tax credits, or dealing with any IRS matters. Without your correct Taxpayer ID Number, the IRS cannot match documents to your account, which can delay refunds or create compliance issues.

According to IRS records, the agency processes hundreds of millions of tax documents annually using Taxpayer ID Numbers. Errors in reporting this number—such as transposing digits—account for a significant portion of delayed refunds and tax account discrepancies. Knowing where to find your correct number helps prevent these problems from occurring.

Practical Takeaway: Your Taxpayer ID Number is either your Social Security Number or your Employer Identification Number. Both are nine-digit identifiers that the IRS uses to track all your tax information. Keeping this number accurate and accessible is fundamental to managing your tax affairs smoothly.

Locating Your Social Security Number as Your Taxpayer ID

If you're a U.S. citizen or permanent resident who works in the United States, your Social Security Number serves as your Taxpayer ID Number. This nine-digit number appears on your Social Security card, which you should have received when you were born or when you first became authorized to work in the country. Finding your Social Security Number is typically straightforward because it appears on many official documents you already possess.

One of the most obvious places to find your Social Security Number is on your actual Social Security card. This card, issued by the Social Security Administration, displays your name and your nine-digit Social Security Number clearly on the front. If you still have your original card or a replacement card, you can look at it directly. However, many people store their Social Security cards in safe places—such as locked boxes, safes, or files—and may not have immediate access to them. For this reason, it's worth knowing other places where your number appears.

Your most recent tax return contains your Social Security Number. Federal income tax returns filed with the IRS show your Taxpayer ID Number on the first page of your return. If you filed taxes last year, you can locate your return through several methods. Taxpayers who maintain paper records of their filed taxes can pull out their tax documents. The Social Security Number appears near the top of the first page of Form 1040, which is the standard individual income tax return form. You can also contact a tax professional who filed your return on your behalf—they should have copies of your filed documents and can provide your number.

Pay stubs and W-2 forms from employment also display your Social Security Number. Your employer reports your wages to the IRS using your Social Security Number on a W-2 form, which you receive by January 31st each year if you were employed during the previous year. Your regular pay stubs from your employer may also show your Social Security Number, though some employers mask this information for security reasons. If you've kept any pay stubs from the current or previous year, you can find your number there.

Bank and investment account statements sometimes display your Taxpayer ID Number. When you opened a bank account, brokerage account, or other financial account, the financial institution asked for your Social Security Number for tax reporting purposes. Your account statements may show this number, either in full or partially masked for security. Checking a recent statement from any major account you hold is another way to locate your number.

Practical Takeaway: To find your Social Security Number, start by checking your Social Security card, recent tax returns, W-2 forms, current pay stubs, or financial account statements. These documents all contain your number and are likely already in your possession or available through your employer or financial institutions.

Finding Your Employer Identification Number for Business and Non-Citizen Identification

Some individuals and entities use an Employer Identification Number (EIN) instead of a Social Security Number as their Taxpayer ID Number. An EIN is a nine-digit number that the IRS issues to businesses, estates, trusts, non-profit organizations, and certain non-citizens who cannot obtain a Social Security Number. If you own a business, operate as a sole proprietor with employees, manage a trust or estate, or are a non-citizen working in the United States, you may need to locate your EIN rather than your Social Security Number.

The IRS assigns EINs to help distinguish business entities from individual taxpayers. Unlike Social Security Numbers, which are tied to a person's identity from birth, EINs are specific to a business structure or entity. This means a single person might have multiple EINs if they operate multiple businesses or own multiple entities. The EIN is used on business tax returns, payroll documents, employment-related filings, and any correspondence with the IRS concerning business activities.

Your IRS Determination Letter is often one of the first places where an EIN appears. When you apply for an EIN through the IRS, the agency sends a Determination Letter or confirmation document that displays your newly assigned nine-digit number. If you have this original letter from the IRS, your EIN is clearly shown on it. Many business owners file this document with their business records or store it with their tax documents. If you've kept correspondence from the IRS concerning your business, look for the EIN on that correspondence.

Business tax returns filed with the IRS show your EIN prominently. The most common business tax returns are Form 1040-SE for self-employed individuals, Form 1120 for corporations, Form 1120-S for S corporations, Form 1065 for partnerships, and Form 990 for non-profit organizations. The EIN appears near the top of these forms. If you or your accountant filed any of these returns in prior years, the EIN is shown on the first page. Copies of your filed business returns—whether you maintain paper copies or have digital records—display your EIN.

Business correspondence from the IRS typically includes your EIN. Any notice, letter, or document the IRS sends regarding your business will reference your EIN. If you've received any IRS correspondence about your business in the past few years, the EIN appears on that correspondence. Additionally, if you've ever contacted the IRS about your business account, the representative would have noted your EIN during that interaction.

Bank accounts opened under your business name or an employment tax account will reference your EIN. Business bank accounts require an EIN for tax reporting purposes. Your business bank statements, checks, and banking documents may show your EIN. Similarly, if you've registered for payroll tax accounts or sales tax accounts with your state or federal government, those accounts are associated with your EIN, and the account numbers or confirmations from those registrations will reference it.

The IRS provides online resources for businesses that have lost their EIN information. Through the IRS website, you may be able to retrieve information about your EIN through the Business Services Online portal or by contacting the IRS directly. The IRS maintains records of all assigned EINs, and you can reach them by phone during business hours to inquire about your business's identification number.

Practical Takeaway: If you operate a business or manage a trust or estate, your Taxpayer ID Number may be an EIN. Look for it on your IRS Determination Letter, business tax returns, business bank statements, or any correspondence from the IRS regarding your business.
