Learn Where to Find Your Credit Card CVV

Understanding What a CVV Is and Why It Matters

A CVV, or Card Verification Value, is a three or four-digit security code printed on your credit card. This code serves as an extra layer of protection when you make purchases online or over the phone. The CVV helps merchants verify that you actually possess the physical card and aren't just using a stolen credit card number.

Different card companies use different names for this security feature. Visa and Mastercard call it a CVV2, American Express refers to it as a CID (Card Identification Number), and Discover uses the term CVV2. Despite the different names, they all serve the same purpose: to reduce fraudulent transactions.

According to the Federal Reserve, fraud losses on credit and debit cards totaled over $28 billion in recent years. The CVV is one of several tools designed to combat this type of fraud. When you provide your CVV during an online transaction, the merchant sends it to the payment processor, who verifies it matches the card issuer's records. This verification happens within seconds.

The CVV is never stored in the magnetic stripe or computer chip on your card, and legitimate merchants cannot store it after a transaction. This design means that even if a database is hacked, criminals cannot retrieve CVVs because they were never saved. The code only exists on the physical card and in your card issuer's secure systems.

Practical takeaway: Your CVV is a critical security feature that you should protect just like you protect your PIN. Never share it with anyone, and only enter it on secure, official payment websites.

Locating the CVV on Visa and Mastercard

For Visa and Mastercard holders, the CVV is located on the back of your card. Look at the white signature strip on the reverse side. To the right of this strip, you will see a series of numbers. The last three digits of this number sequence make up your CVV. These three digits appear after the full credit card number that is printed or embossed on the back.

The placement is consistent across virtually all Visa and Mastercard products. Whether you have a basic card, a rewards card, or a premium card, the CVV will always be in this same location on the back. The code is typically printed in a slightly smaller font than the card number itself.

Some cards print the CVV in a more visually distinct way. You might see it printed in reverse on some cards, which is intentional—it's part of the anti-counterfeiting design. This reverse printing makes it harder for someone to photograph or scan your card details without your knowledge. If you look at your card and the three digits appear backwards, this is normal and expected.

The CVV on Visa and Mastercard cards is always exactly three digits long. Never look for a four-digit code on these card types, as that would indicate an American Express card or a similar variant. If you're unsure whether you're looking at the correct numbers, double-check that you're looking at the back of the card and that the numbers appear after the full card number printed on the back signature strip area.

Practical takeaway: For Visa and Mastercard, turn your card over, locate the white signature strip on the back, and find the three-digit number that appears to the right of it. This is your CVV.

Finding the CVV on American Express Cards

American Express cards have a different CVV layout compared to Visa and Mastercard. For American Express cardholders, the security code is located on the front of the card, not the back. Look at the front right side of your American Express card, near the edge. The CVV appears slightly above the credit card number.

The American Express CVV is four digits long, not three. This longer code is called the Card Identification Number or CID. It's one of the few times you'll see a four-digit CVV code in the payment card industry. This length difference is one way to immediately identify an American Express card's security code from other card types.

The four-digit code on American Express cards is usually printed in a smaller font and positioned in a specific location on the front of the card. Because it's on the front of the card, it's more visible and accessible than the back-of-card codes on other card types. This positioning is intentional, as American Express designed their cards with this particular security feature layout.

American Express also integrates additional security features into their card design. The code is printed in a specific way that makes it difficult to reproduce if someone is attempting to counterfeit a card. The printing quality and placement are part of American Express's overall security strategy to protect cardholders from fraud.

Practical takeaway: For American Express cards, look at the front of your card on the right side. Find the four-digit number printed above your credit card number. This four-digit code is your CVV or CID.

Locating the CVV on Discover Cards

Discover cardholders can find their CVV in the same location as Visa and Mastercard users. The code appears on the back of your Discover card, positioned to the right of the white signature strip. Like Visa and Mastercard, the Discover CVV is three digits long.

Discover cards follow the standard three-digit CVV format used by most major card issuers. The code is printed in the same general location and style as other cards with back-of-card security codes. If you're holding a Discover card and looking for the CVV, the process is identical to finding it on a Visa or Mastercard.

One thing to note about Discover cards is that they are sometimes less widely accepted internationally than Visa or Mastercard. However, the security features, including the CVV, remain consistent with industry standards. When you use your Discover card online or over the phone and need to provide your CVV, you'll be entering the same three-digit code found on the back of your card.

Discover, like other card issuers, never stores your CVV after a transaction completes. The code is only used at the moment of purchase to verify that you possess the physical card. This temporary use of the CVV is a key reason why it provides such effective fraud protection.

Practical takeaway: For Discover cards, turn your card over and locate the three digits to the right of the signature strip on the back. This is your CVV, using the same positioning as Visa and Mastercard.

Understanding When and Where to Use Your CVV

Your CVV is required in specific payment situations. The most common scenario is online shopping. When you purchase something on a website and reach the checkout page, you will typically see a field labeled "CVV," "Security Code," "Card Verification Value," or "CVC." This is where you enter your three or four-digit code. The website uses this information to verify your identity and reduce fraud risk.

Phone orders represent another situation where merchants may request your CVV. When you call a company to place an order and provide your credit card information verbally, the representative may ask for your CVV. This code helps the merchant confirm that you actually have the card in your possession. It's a reasonable request from a legitimate business.

Subscription services and recurring payments often require your CVV when you initially set up the payment method. Services like streaming platforms, software subscriptions, or membership programs use the CVV to verify your card during the initial transaction. After this verification, the service may store your card number for future charges, but they cannot legally store the CVV itself.

There are situations where you should never provide your CVV. Never give your CVV to someone who calls you claiming to be from your bank or credit card company. Legitimate financial institutions will never ask for your CVV over the phone. Never enter your CVV on an unsecured website—look for "https://" in the address bar and a lock icon, which indicate an encrypted connection. Never share your CVV via email, text message, or social media. These methods are not secure.

Practical takeaway: Provide your CVV only when making a legitimate online purchase, placing a phone order with an authorized merchant, or setting up an authorized subscription service. Never volunteer this information and always verify you're dealing with a trusted company before sharing it.
