Learn What ID TSA Accepts for Air Travel

Understanding TSA ID Requirements for Air Travel

When you arrive at an airport in the United States, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) requires passengers to show a valid form of identification before entering the security checkpoint. This is a federal requirement that applies to all travelers, regardless of age or destination. The TSA uses ID verification as part of its security screening process to confirm that the person boarding the flight matches the name on the airline ticket.

The specific ID documents accepted by TSA are standardized across all U.S. airports, though some forms of identification are more widely recognized than others. Understanding which documents the TSA will accept can help you prepare for your trip and avoid delays at security. The TSA maintains an official list of acceptable documents on its website, which is regularly updated to reflect changes in state-issued ID formats and federal requirements.

It's important to note that different situations require different types of identification. For example, a driver's license works for most domestic flights, but international travel may require a passport. Additionally, some travelers—such as children under 18—have different requirements than adult passengers. Military personnel, federal employees, and immigrants may have unique documents they can present instead of standard civilian IDs.

The TSA's ID requirements serve multiple purposes beyond security screening. They help prevent identity fraud, ensure that airline records match passenger information, and support law enforcement efforts. By learning what documents are accepted, you can prepare your travel documents in advance and move through airport security more smoothly.

Practical Takeaway: Review your identification documents at least one week before your flight. Confirm that your ID is not expired and that your name matches the name on your airline ticket exactly. If these don't match, contact your airline before arriving at the airport.

Primary Government-Issued IDs the TSA Accepts

The most commonly accepted form of identification at TSA checkpoints is a valid state-issued driver's license. A driver's license from any of the 50 states, as well as the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, will be accepted for domestic flights. The license must be current and not expired, though the TSA allows licenses that expired during the COVID-19 pandemic with some flexibility through specific dates (travelers should verify current policies on the TSA website).

A U.S. passport or passport card is another primary form of ID that TSA accepts. Passports are issued by the U.S. State Department and are valid for international travel as well as domestic flights. A passport book is the traditional form, but a passport card—which is smaller and wallet-sized—is also acceptable. Both must be current and not expired. Passports are particularly useful for travelers who move frequently or live in states where obtaining a driver's license may be difficult.

State-issued identification cards serve the same purpose as driver's licenses but are issued to people who do not drive. These non-driver ID cards are produced by state departments of motor vehicles and contain similar security features and verification information as driver's licenses. They are accepted for all domestic flights and must follow the same expiration requirements as driver's licenses.

Military ID cards, including those issued to active-duty service members, retirees, and dependents, are accepted by TSA. These include the Common Access Card (CAC) and military dependent ID cards. Military retirees and their family members have a separate form of military ID that is also accepted. Veterans who do not hold a current military ID must use other forms of identification.

Federal employee ID cards issued by government agencies are accepted at TSA checkpoints. These cards are issued to federal workers and contain security features that verify government employment. Some federal agencies issue multiple types of ID cards, and all valid federal employee IDs will be accepted.

Practical Takeaway: If you have multiple forms of government-issued ID, keep your primary ID (driver's license or passport) in an easily accessible location at the airport. If your ID is lost or damaged, you should still contact your state's motor vehicle department immediately—you may still be able to fly with additional verification steps.

Additional Acceptable Forms of Identification

Beyond standard driver's licenses and passports, the TSA accepts several other forms of government-issued identification. A permanent resident card, also known as a "green card," is accepted for domestic and international travel. This card is issued to foreign nationals who have been authorized to live and work permanently in the United States. The card must be current and not expired.

Employment authorization documents (EAD) issued by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) are also accepted by TSA. These documents authorize foreign nationals to work in the United States and contain identifying information and security features. An EAD must be current to be used as identification at the airport.

Trusted Traveler Program cards represent another category of acceptable identification. These include cards from programs such as Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI, and FAST. These cards are issued by U.S. Customs and Border Protection to pre-screened low-risk travelers. Holders of these cards often move through airport security more quickly because they have already undergone background checks. However, the actual Trusted Traveler card itself must be presented as identification.

For travelers under 18, a birth certificate combined with another form of identification (such as a school ID) may be accepted, though regulations vary. Some states accept state-issued ID for minors, which is similar to adult ID cards. Infants and very young children traveling with an adult guardian generally do not need their own ID if they are on the same reservation as the adult.

Native American tribal identification cards, issued by federally recognized Indian tribes, are accepted by TSA. These cards must contain a photo and identifying information similar to state-issued IDs. Each tribe may issue slightly different formats, but the TSA recognizes valid tribal IDs from federally recognized tribes.

Foreign government-issued passports are accepted for all travelers, whether they are foreign nationals or U.S. citizens traveling on a foreign passport. The passport must be current and not expired. This is particularly important for international travel, where your foreign passport may be your primary travel document.

Practical Takeaway: If your primary ID is damaged, lost, or expired before your trip, check the TSA website for a complete and current list of alternative IDs you may carry. Keep a photo of your valid ID on your phone as a backup, and bring any secondary forms of identification that match your airline ticket name.

ID Verification Rules for Different Types of Travelers

Domestic travelers face different ID requirements than those flying internationally. For domestic flights—flights between two points within the United States—TSA requires one form of valid government-issued photo identification. A driver's license, state ID, passport, or military ID will satisfy this requirement. The identification must be current (not expired) and must match the name on your airline ticket. Approximately 97% of domestic air passengers use a standard driver's license or state ID at security checkpoints.

International travelers have more specific requirements. To travel outside the United States and return, a U.S. citizen must have a valid U.S. passport. A passport card is acceptable for travel to Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, and Caribbean nations if traveling by sea, but a full passport book is required for air travel to most international destinations. Non-U.S. citizens traveling internationally must have a valid passport from their country and any required visas or travel authorizations.

Minors traveling within the United States generally do not require their own ID if they are traveling with a parent or legal guardian on the same reservation. However, the TSA recommends that minors have some form of identification. If a minor is traveling alone or with someone other than a parent (such as a grandparent or older sibling), they should have a birth certificate, school ID, or state-issued minor ID card. Some airlines have additional age verification requirements beyond TSA security screening.

Travelers with disabilities or medical conditions may need to carry additional documentation. If you use medical equipment at the airport (such as a wheelchair, cane, or oxygen), you do not need special ID, but you should inform TSA officers about your equipment. Medications must be in original containers with your name on them. If you have a service animal, your animal does not need ID, but you should have documentation from a licensed healthcare provider verifying that your animal is a service animal.

Transgender and non-binary travelers should ensure that their ID matches the name and gender marker they present at the airport. If your ID does not match your appearance, you may experience additional screening, but TSA policy does not allow officers to refuse entry
