Learn What Documents You Need for a Texas ID

Overview of Texas ID Document Requirements

A Texas ID is an official identification card issued by the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS). Unlike a driver's license, a Texas ID does not permit you to operate a vehicle. Instead, it serves as a valid form of state identification for everyday situations such as opening bank accounts, boarding domestic flights, entering government buildings, or proving your age at establishments that check identification.

The Texas ID card contains your photograph, signature, address, date of birth, and a unique identification number. According to the DPS, approximately 2.3 million Texans hold a Texas ID card as their primary form of state identification. The card is valid for six years for adults aged 18 and older, and for five years for applicants under 18 years old. Some special circumstances, such as certain medical conditions or religious beliefs, may allow for modifications to the standard card features.

When you visit a DPS driver license office to obtain a Texas ID, you will need to present specific documents to verify your identity, residency, and Social Security number. The DPS maintains strict documentation standards to prevent fraud and ensure that only eligible individuals receive identification cards. Each document you bring must be genuine and current, or in some cases, within a certain timeframe of acceptance.

Understanding which documents the DPS accepts can help you prepare before your office visit. Bringing the correct documents on your first visit reduces the chance that you will need to return multiple times to complete the process. The DPS processes Texas ID applications at over 250 service centers across the state, making the service widely accessible to residents. Visit times vary by location, but most offices maintain extended hours including some evening and Saturday appointments.

Practical Takeaway: Gather your documents before visiting a DPS office. Check the specific requirements for your situation on the official DPS website or by calling your local office to confirm which documents you need to bring.

Proof of Identity Documents

Proof of identity is the first category of documentation you must provide when obtaining a Texas ID. These documents verify that you are who you claim to be. The DPS accepts a variety of identity documents, and you typically need to present one document from this category, though some situations may require more than one.

A valid U.S. passport is one of the strongest forms of identity proof. If you have a passport, it contains your photograph, signature, date of birth, and other identifying information that the DPS can verify through federal databases. A passport book remains valid for 10 years for adults. If your passport has expired, the DPS may still accept it as proof of identity, though you should verify this with your local office before your visit.

A certified birth certificate is another widely accepted identity document. Texas birth certificates are issued by the Texas Vital Statistics unit or by the county clerk in the county where you were born. If you were born outside of Texas, you can obtain a certified copy from the state vital records office in your birth state. A certified birth certificate includes a raised seal and an official signature, which distinguishes it from a regular copy. The DPS will not accept photocopies or uncertified versions. Birth certificates remain valid indefinitely, so even older certificates are acceptable as long as they are certified.

Additional identity documents recognized by the DPS include valid military identification, Native American tribal documents, permanent resident cards (green cards), employment authorization documents, and certain school identification cards issued by recognized institutions. Some applicants may present a combination of documents if a single document does not fully establish identity. For example, if you were known by a different name at birth, you might present both your birth certificate and a marriage certificate or court order documenting the name change.

Foreign documents require special handling. If your identity document is from another country, it must be accompanied by an official English translation prepared by a certified translator. The DPS will not accept documents in foreign languages without certified translation. Certain foreign documents, such as passports from countries with which the United States maintains formal diplomatic relations, may be accepted if they are still valid.

Practical Takeaway: A passport or certified birth certificate are your most straightforward identity documents. If you do not have either, check the DPS website for a complete list of alternative documents your office will accept.

Proof of Residency in Texas

To obtain a Texas ID, you must prove that you currently live in Texas. The DPS requires documentation that shows your name and current Texas address. This residency requirement ensures that the ID accurately reflects where you live and prevents individuals from obtaining multiple IDs in different states.

Utility bills are among the most commonly accepted residency documents. A utility bill for electricity, natural gas, water, or garbage service showing your name and current Texas address will satisfy this requirement. The bill must be dated within the last 60 days. Most utility companies issue bills monthly, so a recent bill from your current provider is straightforward to obtain. If you receive paperless bills via email, you can print a copy from your account on the utility company's website.

Lease agreements and rental contracts also serve as proof of residency. If you rent your home, apartment, or room, a signed lease showing your name, the property address, and the lease period may be presented. The lease must clearly indicate a Texas address. Month-to-month leases are acceptable. If you recently moved and your lease shows a future start date within the next few weeks, some offices may accept it if accompanied by additional documentation showing your previous address.

Bank statements, mortgage documents, and homeowner insurance policies all provide evidence of residency. A mortgage statement from your lender showing your name and Texas property address, or a homeowner insurance policy for a Texas property, demonstrates that you maintain a Texas residence. These documents must be recent, typically dated within the last 60 to 90 days. A bank statement showing your name and Texas address also works, though statements must come from a bank or credit union, not just credit card companies.

Government documents can serve as residency proof. Property tax records, vehicle registration documents, and hunting or fishing licenses issued by Texas show your address on file with state agencies. A vehicle registration from the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles is particularly strong evidence. An unexpired hunting or fishing license issued by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department also counts. Voter registration documents and tax forms filed with the State of Texas are sometimes accepted depending on your local office's policies.

If you cannot provide one of these standard documents, the DPS may accept a combination of documents, such as a letter from your employer on company letterhead showing your name and work address in Texas along with a utility bill, or a school enrollment document with your address. Some people in transitional housing situations may use documents such as a shelter verification letter or a mail delivery service receipt.

Practical Takeaway: Bring a recent utility bill or lease agreement. These are the fastest documents to obtain and most offices process them immediately. Have a backup option ready in case your first document is not accepted.

Social Security Number Documentation

The DPS requires verification of your Social Security number as part of the Texas ID application process. This requirement helps prevent identity fraud and ensures that the DPS has accurate information for background checks and database maintenance. You must provide documentation that contains your name and full Social Security number, and the DPS will verify this information through federal Social Security Administration records.

An original or certified Social Security card is the most direct form of verification. This is the card you received from the Social Security Administration, printed with your name and nine-digit Social Security number. Many people have misplaced their original card, so if you do not have it, you can request a replacement from the Social Security Administration. You can apply for a replacement card online through the Social Security Administration website, by phone, or by visiting a local Social Security office. Replacement cards typically arrive within 7 to 14 business days.

Tax documents provide Social Security number documentation. A W-2 form from your employer, a 1099 form if you are self-employed, or your most recent federal tax return (Form 1040) all display your Social Security number alongside your name. These documents must be original or certified copies. Tax returns should be the complete document, not just a copy of the first page. The year shown on the tax document should be recent, typically within the last two years, though the DPS may accept older documents in some cases.

Financial institution documents may include your Social Security number. A bank statement or credit union statement showing your account in your name with your Social Security number can serve this purpose. The statement must clearly display your full Social Security number, not a masked version. Some banks now mask Social Security numbers on statements for security reasons, so if your statement shows only the last four digits, it will not
