Learn What AAA Auto Insurance Covers for Rentals

Understanding AAA Rental Car Coverage Basics

AAA auto insurance offers rental car reimbursement coverage as an optional add-on to your standard policy. This coverage helps pay for the cost of renting a vehicle when your car is being repaired after a covered accident or other insured loss. Unlike some insurance companies that include rental coverage automatically, AAA typically requires you to add this protection to your policy during the enrollment process or when making changes to your existing coverage.

Rental car coverage operates on a reimbursement basis, meaning you generally pay for the rental upfront and then submit a claim to AAA for reimbursement. The amount AAA pays back depends on several factors, including your coverage limit, the actual rental cost, and whether the rental meets the terms outlined in your policy. Most AAA policies that include rental coverage will reimburse you up to a maximum daily amount, such as $30, $45, or $75 per day, depending on which coverage limit you selected when you purchased the policy.

The coverage typically applies when your vehicle is unavailable due to a covered loss. This might include situations where your car is being repaired after a collision, theft, or damage from weather events. However, the coverage generally does not apply to routine maintenance like oil changes or scheduled service, since your vehicle would still be available for use during that time.

AAA members may also receive discounts when renting vehicles through AAA partnerships with major rental companies like Hertz, Budget, and Avis. These discounts can help reduce rental costs even beyond what your insurance reimbursement covers. It's worth checking with AAA about current rental discounts in your area before booking a vehicle.

Practical Takeaway: Review your current AAA policy documents to understand whether you have rental car coverage included and what your daily reimbursement limit is. If you don't have this coverage and frequently rely on your vehicle, consider discussing whether adding it might provide protection that matches your needs.

Coverage Limits and Daily Reimbursement Amounts

AAA rental car coverage comes with specific daily limits that determine how much the insurance company will reimburse you each day you rent a vehicle. Common daily limits range from $30 to $75 per day, though these amounts can vary based on your specific policy and the state where you live. Understanding these limits is crucial because they directly affect how much of your actual rental costs AAA will pay back to you.

For example, if your policy includes a $45 daily limit and you rent a car for $60 per day, AAA would reimburse you $45 per day, leaving you responsible for the additional $15 daily cost. If you rent the car for five days, you would receive $225 in reimbursement while paying $300 total out of pocket. Some policies also include maximum limits on the total number of days covered, such as 30 days per claim, which means that even if your car is in the repair shop for two months, the coverage might only reimburse you for the first 30 days of rental costs.

When selecting your coverage limit, consider how much typical rental cars cost in your area and how long repairs to your vehicle might reasonably take. In 2023, the average daily cost for a standard rental car in the United States ranged from $40 to $70 per day, depending on location and vehicle type. Urban areas and popular travel destinations typically have higher rental rates. If you live in a city with higher rental costs, a $30 daily limit might cover less than half your actual rental expenses, whereas a $75 limit would provide more substantial coverage.

Some AAA members increase their rental coverage limits after going through a major repair. For instance, someone whose vehicle required a month-long repair process might realize their original $30 daily limit would have left them paying hundreds of dollars out of pocket. Adjusting coverage limits after understanding your specific situation can help better protect you in future situations.

Practical Takeaway: Calculate what rental cars typically cost in your area and estimate how long your vehicle might reasonably be in the shop for common repairs. Use this information to determine whether your current daily limit adequately covers your needs or whether adjusting your coverage might be worthwhile.

What Types of Situations Trigger Rental Coverage

AAA rental car coverage activates when your vehicle becomes unavailable due to a covered loss under your auto insurance policy. The most common trigger is a collision—when your car is damaged in an accident and requires repairs at a body shop. During the repair period, which might last from several days to several weeks depending on the damage severity, your rental coverage would help pay for a temporary vehicle.

Other covered losses that typically trigger rental reimbursement include comprehensive coverage events. These are losses that occur from causes outside your control, such as theft, vandalism, natural disasters, falling objects, animal collisions, or weather damage like hail or flooding. If a tree branch falls on your car during a storm and damages the roof and windshield, you would file a comprehensive claim, and your rental coverage would apply while repairs are being made.

Uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage losses may also trigger rental benefits, depending on your policy. These scenarios involve accidents caused by drivers who either have no insurance or insufficient insurance to cover damages. The claim process and rental coverage availability in these situations can be more complex, so reviewing your specific policy language or contacting AAA directly about your coverage is important.

However, rental coverage does not typically apply to routine maintenance and scheduled service. If you take your car to the shop for an oil change, tire rotation, or annual inspection, you would not receive rental reimbursement since the vehicle is not damaged and the service is preventive in nature. Similarly, warranty repairs, recalls, and manufacturer buyback situations usually fall outside the scope of rental coverage because they involve manufacturer responsibility rather than insured losses.

The timeline also matters. Rental coverage typically begins when your vehicle enters the repair facility and ends when the repairs are completed and your vehicle is ready for pickup. If your insurance company declares your vehicle a total loss and you receive payment for the car's value instead of having it repaired, rental coverage generally ends, since the vehicle is no longer being repaired.

Practical Takeaway: Keep documentation of any accidents or damage incidents you report to AAA, noting the date you brought your vehicle in for repairs and the expected completion date. This information will help support your rental reimbursement claim and ensure you receive payment for all eligible days.

The Claims Process for Rental Reimbursement

Filing a rental car claim with AAA involves several steps that begin with reporting the initial loss to your insurance company. When you experience an accident, theft, or other covered damage, you should contact AAA to file a claim as soon as possible. At this time, inform AAA that you will need a rental vehicle and ask about the process for submitting rental reimbursement claims. Some AAA offices can provide guidance on approved rental facilities or rental companies that have partnerships with AAA.

After reporting the initial loss and receiving a claim number, you should locate a rental vehicle. Many people rent from major companies like Enterprise, Hertz, Budget, or Avis, which have locations throughout most communities. You will be responsible for paying the rental cost upfront, either with a credit card or through your own payment method. AAA does not typically pay rental companies directly; instead, you submit documentation of the rental cost for reimbursement after the fact.

To submit a rental reimbursement claim, you will need to gather specific documentation. This typically includes your original AAA claim number, the rental agreement showing the vehicle type, rental dates, and total cost, receipts for the rental payment, and proof that your vehicle was in the repair shop during the rental period. The repair shop estimate or repair invoice can serve as proof that your vehicle was being worked on during the dates you rented an alternative vehicle.

You can submit rental claims through several methods, depending on what AAA offers in your region. Many members can submit claims online through the AAA website or mobile app by uploading photos of receipts and documents. Others may mail physical copies of documentation to their local AAA office. Some AAA locations allow members to submit claims in person. Processing times typically range from 5 to 15 business days, though this can vary depending on claim volume and documentation completeness.

If your claim is denied or if you believe the reimbursement amount is incorrect, you have the right to dispute the decision. This might involve providing additional documentation or having a conversation with an AAA claims representative about the specific policy language related to your situation. Understanding why a claim was denied can help
