Learn How Wise Transfers Money Worldwide

How Wise Works: An Overview of International Money Transfers

Wise (formerly known as TransferWise) is a financial technology company that helps people and businesses send money across borders. The service operates in over 80 countries and supports transfers in more than 40 currencies. Rather than using traditional banking systems, Wise uses a process called the "local transfer method" to move money between countries.

Here's how the basic process works: When you send money through Wise to another country, the company doesn't actually move your physical funds across borders. Instead, Wise holds money in multiple countries simultaneously. When you send dollars from the United States to someone in the United Kingdom, Wise takes your dollars and holds them in their U.S. account. At the same time, they take funds from their UK account and send those British pounds to the recipient. This method reduces the time transfers take and lowers costs compared to traditional international wire transfers.

Wise charges a transparent fee for each transfer, which is displayed before you complete the transaction. The company also applies real mid-market exchange rates—these are the same rates you see on Google or financial websites, not the marked-up rates that traditional banks often use. As of 2024, Wise reports processing over $150 billion in annual transfer volume, indicating substantial usage across different user types.

The service operates through a web platform and mobile app available on iOS and Android. Users can initiate transfers from their computer or phone at any time. Transfer speeds vary depending on the currency corridor and the day of the week, but many transfers between major countries complete within 1-2 business days.

Practical Takeaway: Understanding Wise's method of holding money in multiple countries helps explain why their transfers are faster and cheaper than traditional banks. The company's model relies on currency matching rather than international fund movement, which is a fundamentally different approach than conventional banking systems.

Setting Up Your Wise Account and Verification Process

Creating a Wise account begins with visiting their website or downloading their app. You'll need to provide basic personal information including your name, email address, and date of birth. The registration itself is free and takes only a few minutes to complete.

After initial registration, Wise requires identity verification before you can send money. This is a legal requirement under anti-money laundering and know-your-customer (KYC) regulations that financial institutions must follow. Wise uses automated verification systems that analyze your submitted information against government databases and identity documents.

The verification process typically involves uploading a government-issued ID, such as a passport, driver's license, or national ID card. For most users in developed countries, automated verification completes within minutes. Wise may request additional information if the initial verification cannot be completed automatically. This might include a video selfie or proof of address documentation like a recent utility bill or bank statement.

Once your identity is verified, you can add payment methods to fund your transfers. Wise accepts bank transfers, debit cards, and credit cards in most regions. Some users also fund their account by transferring money from another Wise account. The payment method you choose affects both the transfer fee and the speed of your transaction. Bank transfers typically have lower fees but may take longer, while card payments are faster but carry higher fees.

For recipients, Wise collects information about where the money should go. You'll need the recipient's bank account details or, in some corridors, you can send money to their Wise account directly. Different countries require different information—UK recipients need a sort code and account number, while US recipients need a routing number and account number.

Practical Takeaway: Plan for the verification process to take anywhere from a few minutes to several hours. Have a government-issued ID ready and ensure your address information matches your official documents. If sending to someone for the first time, collect their complete bank details in advance to avoid delays.

Understanding Wise Fees and Exchange Rates

Wise's fee structure consists of two components: a transfer fee and an exchange rate markup. The transfer fee is a fixed or percentage-based charge that covers the cost of processing your transaction. As of 2024, transfer fees typically range from $0.41 to $12 for bank transfers and $1.52 to $8 for card transfers, though these amounts vary by corridor and transfer amount. Percentage-based fees usually apply to larger transfers, typically ranging from 0.35% to 2% of the amount sent.

The exchange rate Wise applies is the mid-market rate, which is the real-time rate you would see on financial websites. Unlike many banks that mark up exchange rates by 4-8%, Wise applies the mid-market rate directly. This means if you're sending $1,000 to the UK and the mid-market rate is 1.27 GBP per USD, you receive approximately £1,270 (minus Wise's stated fee) rather than a worse rate.

Wise provides complete fee transparency before you confirm any transfer. When you enter the amount you want to send, the platform displays the exact amount the recipient will receive, the exchange rate being applied, and all fees being charged. There are no hidden fees or surprise charges added later. This transparency is one of the key differences between Wise and traditional banks, which often provide fee information only after the transaction completes.

For recipients, most transfers arrive with no additional charges deducted. However, some banks may charge their own receiving fees, which would be separate from Wise's charges. These recipient bank fees vary by country and bank and are typically $1-$15 for international transfers.

The cost-effectiveness of Wise compared to banks depends on your specific transfer corridor. For common routes like US to UK or Australia to US, Wise typically saves 50-80% compared to bank fees and rates. For transfers to developing countries or less common corridors, savings may vary. You can compare costs by getting quotes from both your bank and Wise for your specific transfer route.

Practical Takeaway: Always review the quote screen before confirming your transfer—this shows your exact costs and what the recipient will receive. For recurring transfers, calculate your total annual cost with Wise versus your bank to understand potential savings over time. Consider that different payment methods (bank transfer vs. card) create different fees for the same destination.

Transfer Speed and Processing Times

Transfer speed through Wise varies based on several factors including the currency pair, the day of the week, and the payment method you use. Most transfers between major currencies and developed countries complete within 1-2 business days. However, understanding the specific timelines for your particular transfer corridor helps set realistic expectations.

Transfers originating from bank account payments typically process faster than card payments because banks have established relationships with Wise for fund settlement. Bank transfers from a US account to the UK, for example, often complete within 24 hours on business days. If you initiate a transfer on Friday evening, it may not begin processing until Monday morning, which could extend delivery to Tuesday or Wednesday.

Card-funded transfers have different timing. When you pay with a debit or credit card, Wise must first receive the card payment from your card issuer, which creates an additional processing step. Card-funded transfers typically take 2-3 business days for delivery, though some routes complete faster. The card itself may also take 1-5 business days to authorize, during which Wise holds your transfer in a pending state.

Transfers to certain countries or emerging markets may take longer. Transfers to countries with less developed banking infrastructure or those using less common currencies might take 3-5 business days or occasionally longer. Wise provides estimated delivery times for each specific corridor when you create your transfer, so you can see the expected timeframe before committing.

Weekend and holiday processing affects timing because most banks don't process international transfers on weekends or national holidays. A transfer initiated on Friday may not reach the recipient until Wednesday or Thursday of the following week. Wise's website displays business day calculations, so if you see "1-2 business days," that means 24-48 hours of actual processing time, not calendar days.

For time-sensitive transfers, some Wise routes now offer faster delivery options. The Wise app shows which transfers can be expedited and displays the additional cost. Priority processing typically delivers funds within hours rather than days for supported corridors.

Practical Takeaway: Check the estimated delivery time for your specific route when creating a transfer—don't assume all transfers take the same amount of time. For urgent payments, verify whether priority processing is available before initiating the transfer. Account for
