Learn How Walmart Credit Cards Work

Overview of Walmart Credit Cards

Walmart offers two main credit card options for shoppers: the Walmart Credit Card and the Walmart Mastercard. Both cards are issued through Capital One and serve different purposes depending on where you shop and what benefits matter most to you. The Walmart Credit Card can be used only at Walmart and Sam's Club locations, while the Walmart Mastercard works anywhere Mastercard is accepted, including online retailers, restaurants, gas stations, and other merchants worldwide.

As of 2024, Walmart Credit Card holders report using their cards for various reasons. Some use them primarily for the cashback rewards on everyday purchases, while others value the potential for special financing offers on larger purchases. The cards do not charge annual fees, which means there are no yearly costs just for holding the card in your wallet.

Understanding how these cards work requires looking at several key components: how rewards accumulate, what interest rates apply, how payments work, and what terms and conditions govern the account. Each of these elements affects how much value you might get from using a Walmart credit card compared to using cash, debit, or other payment methods.

The cards also come with different reward structures. The Walmart Credit Card offers 3% cashback at Walmart and Sam's Club locations when you fuel up at their pumps, 2% cashback on Sam's Club purchases (for members), and 1% cashback on all other purchases at Walmart and Sam's Club. The Walmart Mastercard offers different rewards, including 3% cashback at Walmart and Sam's Club, 1% cashback at gas stations and on travel purchases, and 1% cashback on all other purchases.

Practical Takeaway: Before applying, determine which card matches your shopping habits. If you shop exclusively at Walmart and Sam's Club, the Walmart Credit Card might offer better rewards in those locations. If you shop at multiple retailers and want flexibility, the Walmart Mastercard provides broader usability.

How Rewards and Cashback Work

Walmart's credit card rewards programs operate on a straightforward cashback system rather than point-based rewards. Cashback means you earn a percentage of your purchase amount back as cash, which typically shows up as a credit on your account statement or can be used toward future purchases. The reward percentages vary depending on where you use the card and which card you hold.

For the Walmart Credit Card, the structure breaks down into three tiers. At Walmart stores and Sam's Club locations, you earn 1% cashback on most purchases. When you use the card to pay for fuel at Walmart or Sam's Club fuel stations, this increases to 3% cashback. If you have a Sam's Club membership and use your card for Sam's Club purchases (excluding fuel), you earn 2% cashback. These percentages accumulate over time—each time you make a purchase, that percentage applies to your total amount spent.

The Walmart Mastercard offers a different reward structure since it works everywhere. You earn 3% cashback when you shop at Walmart and Sam's Club. At gas stations outside of Walmart locations and when you travel (including airline tickets, hotels, and rental cars), you earn 1% cashback. All other purchases made anywhere Mastercard is accepted earn 1% cashback. This broader structure makes sense for people who shop at various stores and want a single card for multiple purposes.

Cashback rewards typically appear as statement credits, meaning the amount shows up as money credited back to your account. You can often choose how to use this credit—some cardholders let it reduce their balance owed, while others use it as a discount on future purchases. The cashback does not expire as long as your account remains open and in good standing, though policies vary by card issuer.

To illustrate with a real example: if you spend $100 on groceries at Walmart using the Walmart Credit Card, you would earn $1 in cashback. If you spent that $100 on fuel at a Walmart fuel station, you would earn $3 in cashback instead. Over the course of a year, someone who spends $5,000 at Walmart and $1,200 on fuel could earn around $86 in cashback rewards annually through the card's structure.

Practical Takeaway: Track where you spend the most money to determine if the rewards structure offers meaningful value. Focus on categories where you earn higher percentages, and consider whether the cashback savings outweigh any interest charges if you carry a balance.

Interest Rates, Annual Percentage Rate, and Fees

The interest rate on a Walmart credit card—known as the Annual Percentage Rate or APR—determines how much you pay if you carry a balance beyond your due date. Unlike rewards, which you want to maximize, interest rates are costs you want to minimize. Walmart credit card APRs typically range from about 17% to 26% for standard purchases, depending on your creditworthiness and current economic conditions. This means if you carry a $1,000 balance for a full year without making additional payments, you could pay between $170 and $260 in interest charges alone.

The actual APR you receive depends on factors that Capital One (the card issuer) considers, including your credit score, payment history, and current debt levels. People with higher credit scores often receive lower APR offers, while those with lower scores may face higher rates. Your APR might also change over time—card issuers can increase or decrease rates, though they must provide notice of any changes.

It is important to understand that the interest rate applies to carried balances, not to the rewards you earn. If you pay off your entire balance each month before the due date, you pay zero interest charges. The rewards and cashback you earned remain yours to keep. This is why many financial advisors suggest using credit cards strategically—pay them off monthly and collect rewards without incurring interest costs.

Walmart credit cards have no annual fees, which distinguishes them from premium credit cards offered by other banks. This means you can hold the card without paying yearly costs, even if you do not use it regularly. However, there are other potential fees to understand. Late payment fees typically range from $25 to $39 if you miss a payment deadline. Over-limit fees may apply if your balance exceeds your credit limit (though many issuers no longer charge these). Balance transfer fees and cash advance fees may also apply in certain situations, usually around 3% to 5% of the amount transferred or withdrawn.

Real-world scenario: A cardholder with a $3,000 balance at 22% APR who makes only minimum payments could take over five years to pay off the debt and pay approximately $1,600 in interest charges. The same person who pays the balance in full each month would pay zero interest and keep all the rewards earned.

Practical Takeaway: Treat a Walmart credit card primarily as a rewards tool rather than a borrowing tool. Avoid carrying balances when possible, because interest charges quickly exceed any cashback benefits you earn. If you must carry a balance, understand that it will cost you significantly.

How to Use Your Walmart Credit Card and Payment Process

Using a Walmart credit card in stores and online is straightforward. At physical Walmart or Sam's Club locations, you swipe, insert, or tap your physical card at the checkout terminal just like any other credit card. Online, you can enter your card details during checkout to complete your purchase. The Walmart Mastercard works the same way wherever Mastercard is accepted. You simply present your card, and the merchant processes it through their payment system.

Making payments on your Walmart credit card account can be done through several methods. Most cardholders set up accounts on Walmart's website or through the Walmart mobile app, where they can view their balance, transaction history, and due dates. From there, you can make payments online using a bank account (ACH transfer), which typically takes one to three business days to process. You can also mail a check to the address listed on your statement, though this takes longer. Some people set up automatic payments so that their account deducts a fixed amount from their bank account on a specific date each month.

Understanding the billing cycle and due date is essential. Your billing cycle typically runs about 30 days and covers all purchases made during that period. At the end of the cycle, you receive a statement showing your balance, available credit, minimum payment amount, and due date. The minimum payment is the smallest amount you must pay by the due date to keep your account in good standing. Minimum payments are
