Learn How Veteran Discounts Work at Car Rentals

Understanding Veteran Discounts at Major Car Rental Companies

Veteran discounts at car rental companies work as price reductions offered to military service members and veterans. These discounts typically range from 5% to 25% off standard rental rates, though the exact percentage varies by company and rental conditions. Most major car rental agencies—including Enterprise, Hertz, Budget, Avis, and National—maintain veteran discount programs year-round.

The core concept behind these discounts is straightforward: rental companies offer reduced rates to veterans as a form of recognition for military service. Unlike some promotions that come and go seasonally, veteran discounts remain available consistently. However, the discount amount and terms depend on factors like the specific rental location, vehicle class, rental dates, and current company promotions running at that time.

Different companies structure their programs differently. Some require you to show military identification at the rental counter, while others allow you to enter a military discount code during the online booking process. A few companies partner with military verification services that confirm your veteran status electronically. Enterprise, for example, offers discounts through their website when you enter a military code. Hertz provides veteran rates through their website and toll-free reservations line. Budget allows veterans to book through military travel portals that automatically apply discounts.

It's important to understand that these are not government-run programs. Car rental companies choose to offer these discounts as part of their business practices. The discounts apply to the base rental rate but typically do not include taxes, fees, or additional charges like insurance, fuel options, or equipment rentals.

Practical Takeaway: Contact your preferred rental company directly or visit their website to learn about their specific veteran discount structure. Different companies offer different discount amounts and require different verification methods, so comparing options can help you find the best rate for your needs.

Which Veterans and Service Members May Receive Discounts

Car rental companies generally extend discounts to veterans, active-duty military members, National Guard members, and Reserve personnel. However, the definition of "veteran" and which service members get discounts varies by company. Understanding who specific companies serve helps you determine where to book your rental.

Active-duty service members typically have the easiest path to receiving discounts since they carry military identification that companies recognize immediately. Reserve and National Guard members are usually included in veteran discount programs, though they must be able to provide documentation of their status. Retired military personnel receive discounts at virtually all major rental companies.

Veterans who received a discharge designation of "Honorable" or "General Under Honorable Conditions" generally may access veteran discounts. Those with other discharge statuses should contact rental companies directly, as policies vary. Spouses and family members of veterans typically do not receive veteran discounts themselves, though some companies occasionally offer military discounts to military family members under specific promotions.

The timeframe for receiving discounts extends indefinitely for veterans—there is no expiration date on veteran status for discount purposes. Whether you separated from service 5 years ago or 40 years ago, you may still access veteran discounts. Some companies even offer discounts to surviving spouses of service members who died while on active duty or to surviving spouses of veterans, though this varies considerably by company.

Proof of military service is necessary to receive these discounts. This might include a military ID card, veteran health identification card, discharge papers (DD Form 214), or other official military documentation. Having this documentation ready before you make a reservation helps the process move smoothly.

Practical Takeaway: Gather your military documentation before booking. This might include your military ID card, VA health card, or discharge papers. Knowing exactly which documents your chosen rental company accepts prevents delays at the rental counter.

How to Book a Rental Using Veteran Discounts

The booking process for veteran discounts varies depending on whether you book online or through a phone reservation line. Understanding the different methods helps you choose the option that works best for you. Most companies offer multiple ways to reserve a car while using your military discount.

For online bookings, most rental companies have a specific field or section on their website where you enter a military discount code. Enterprise uses code "MILITARY" or company-specific codes provided through military organizations. Hertz requires entering a rate code during the booking process. Budget integrates veteran discounts directly into their website when you select military affiliation options. National and Avis similarly have online fields where you indicate your military status.

When booking by phone, inform the reservation agent that you are a veteran or active-duty service member seeking the military rate. The agent will apply the discount and may ask for verification information. Some companies verify your military status over the phone by asking questions or requesting information from their military verification service.

Third-party booking sites that specialize in military travel, such as MilitaryCAC.com, ShopMyExchange.com, or MWR travel portals, often have veteran discounts built into their system. These sites automatically apply military rates when you book through them. Using these portals eliminates the need to enter codes separately.

The timing of your booking matters somewhat. Booking well in advance sometimes offers better rates, but rental prices fluctuate based on demand, season, and location. Weekday rentals typically cost less than weekend rentals. Renting during off-peak travel seasons generally provides lower baseline rates.

Practical Takeaway: If booking online, look for a military discount code or military affiliation option on the rental company's website before completing your reservation. If you don't see one, call the company's reservation line and ask about military rates—they may provide rates not advertised online.

Documentation Requirements and What to Bring

Having the correct documentation when you pick up your rental car ensures a smooth transaction without delays. Different rental companies accept different forms of military documentation, and having the right papers prevents complications at the counter.

A current military ID card represents the easiest and most widely accepted form of documentation. Active-duty service members, National Guard members, Reserve members, and retired military personnel all receive military ID cards that rental companies recognize immediately. These cards clearly show military status and typically include a photo for identification verification.

Veterans without a current military ID may use other official documents. A VA Health Identification Card, issued by the Department of Veterans Affairs to eligible veterans, is accepted by most major rental companies as proof of veteran status. A discharge document, officially called the Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty (DD Form 214), serves as permanent proof of military service. Some rental locations also accept letters from the VA confirming veteran status.

When you arrive at the rental counter, present your military documentation before or when presenting your driver's license. This allows the agent to confirm your eligibility for the military rate shown on your reservation. If you booked online with a military code, the reservation already reflects the discount, but you may still be asked to show documentation.

Beyond military documentation, bring the same items required for any car rental: a valid driver's license, proof of insurance (or be prepared to purchase rental insurance), and a credit card for the rental transaction. The credit card must be in the renter's name. Some rental locations require a second form of identification.

If you're renting a car but lack current military ID, contact your rental company before picking up the vehicle to confirm they accept your documentation. This prevents arriving at the counter only to discover your documents don't meet their requirements.

Practical Takeaway: Bring your military ID card if you have one, along with your driver's license, proof of insurance, and credit card. If you lack a current military ID, contact your rental company beforehand to confirm they accept your alternative documentation—such as your DD Form 214 or VA health card.

Typical Discount Amounts and How They Compare

Veteran discounts at car rental companies typically range from 5% to 25% off the standard rate, though actual discounts depend on multiple factors. Understanding what discount percentages typically look like helps you evaluate whether a given rate represents a good value.
