Learn How to View Saved Passwords on Mac

Understanding Mac Password Storage and Security

macOS stores passwords in a secure system called Keychain, which functions as a digital vault for your sensitive login information. This system has been a core part of Apple's operating system since the early 2000s and continues to be one of the most secure ways to manage passwords on personal computers. When you enter a password in Safari, Mail, or other Mac applications, the system asks whether you want to save it. If you agree, that password gets encrypted and stored in Keychain rather than on your hard drive in plain text.

The Keychain system uses encryption technology to protect your stored passwords. Each password is secured with your Mac user account password, meaning someone would need access to your Mac and your login credentials to view your saved passwords. This layered security approach is why Apple recommends using a strong Mac login password—it's the key that protects all your stored credentials. When you or an application needs to use a saved password, Keychain automatically fills it in without showing you the actual password characters.

Understanding this storage system matters because it explains why passwords are not simply sitting in a folder somewhere on your computer. They're protected by encryption and access controls. However, this also means that if you forget your Mac password, recovering your saved passwords becomes considerably more difficult. Your Mac password and your stored passwords are linked together in the security chain.

Different types of passwords get stored in different ways. Safari passwords are kept separate from system passwords used for WiFi networks or email accounts. Some applications create their own password storage systems rather than using Keychain. Understanding where your passwords actually live on your Mac helps you manage them more effectively and know what to do if you need to retrieve them.

Practical Takeaway: Before attempting to view your saved passwords, recognize that Keychain encryption protects them. Your Mac login password is the gateway to accessing this information, so keeping that password secure and memorable is important.

Accessing Keychain Through System Settings

The most straightforward way to view saved passwords on a Mac involves using the Keychain Access application, which comes built into every Mac. This utility lets you browse through all your stored passwords, though the process requires your Mac login password for security verification. To start, you'll need to open Keychain Access, which lives in the Utilities folder within Applications.

Begin by clicking the Finder icon in your dock. From the menu bar at the top, select "Go," then click "Applications." Next, locate the "Utilities" folder and open it. Inside this folder, you'll see "Keychain Access"—double-click it to launch the application. Alternatively, you can use Spotlight Search: press Command and Space together, type "Keychain Access," and press Enter when it appears in the search results. This method is often faster than navigating through folders.

Once Keychain Access opens, you'll see several categories listed on the left side of the window. These categories include "Passwords," "Secure Notes," "My Certificates," and others. Click on "Passwords" to see all your stored password entries. The main window will display a list of websites, email accounts, and services for which you've saved passwords. This list includes the item name (usually the website or service), the account name, and the date you last modified the entry.

The search function in Keychain Access helps if you're looking for a specific password. At the top right of the window, you'll see a search box. Type the name of the website or service, and Keychain will filter the list to show only matching entries. This is particularly useful if you have dozens of saved passwords and need to locate one quickly.

Practical Takeaway: Use Spotlight Search (Command + Space) to quickly launch Keychain Access rather than navigating through folders. This saves time and reduces the number of clicks needed to reach your password information.

Viewing Password Details and Account Information

After locating the password entry you want to view in Keychain Access, the next step involves revealing the actual password. When you click on any entry in the password list, you'll see basic information about it in the lower portion of the window, but the password itself remains hidden by default. To reveal the password, you need to take an additional action that requires your Mac login credentials.

Double-click on the password entry you want to view. A window will pop up showing detailed information about that saved credential. You'll see fields for "Account" (the username or email address), "Password" (currently hidden behind dots or asterisks), and sometimes "Notes" (any information you've added about this password). To reveal the actual password, look for a checkbox labeled "Show password." Click this checkbox, and your Mac will prompt you to enter your Mac user password.

After you type your Mac login password correctly, the dots or asterisks in the password field will be replaced with the actual characters of your saved password. This verification step ensures that only someone with access to your Mac and knowledge of your login password can view these sensitive credentials. Once you've seen the password, you can copy it by pressing Command+C or by right-clicking and selecting "Copy" from the menu. The password will remain visible in this window until you close it or uncheck the "Show password" box.

The information window also displays other useful details. You'll see the date when this password was created or last changed. Some entries include notes that you or an application added explaining what this password is for or any special information about the account. The account type information shows whether this is an internet password, application password, or another category. Understanding these details helps you manage your passwords more effectively and know which accounts are which.

Practical Takeaway: Always verify the account name and any stored notes when viewing a password to confirm you're looking at the correct credential before copying or using it elsewhere.

Viewing Safari Passwords Through Browser Settings

While Keychain Access shows all your stored passwords, Safari also provides a way to view and manage passwords directly within the browser itself. This approach may be more convenient if you're specifically looking for Safari passwords rather than system-wide credentials. The Safari password manager integrates with macOS's security features while keeping everything within the browser interface.

To access your Safari passwords, open Safari and look at the menu bar at the top of your screen. Click "Safari," then scroll down to find "Settings" or "Preferences" (the name varies depending on your Mac operating system version). A settings window will open. Look for a tab labeled "Passwords" at the top of this window and click it. Safari will ask you to authenticate using your Mac login password or Touch ID if your Mac has it. After you provide authentication, you'll see a list of all websites for which Safari has stored passwords.

In this password list, you'll see the website names and associated usernames or email addresses. To view the password for any entry, click on the website name to select it. A details panel will appear showing the username and a hidden password field. Click on the password field or the eye icon next to it, and Safari will ask for your Mac authentication again. Once authenticated, the actual password will display. You can then copy it using Command+C or use it as needed.

This Safari-specific approach has some advantages over using Keychain Access directly. The interface is simpler and more streamlined, making it easier for people less familiar with system utilities. You can also delete passwords from this interface by selecting an entry and clicking the minus sign button. Additionally, Safari Settings shows you password strength indicators, telling you which of your saved passwords are weak, reused, or have been found in data breaches. This security information helps you identify which passwords you should update.

Practical Takeaway: Check Safari's password manager if you notice weak or compromised passwords listed—this information can guide you toward accounts that need updated credentials.

Locating Passwords for Email and Network Connections

Beyond website passwords stored in Safari, your Mac also saves passwords for email accounts, wireless networks, and various system services. These passwords live in Keychain just like browser passwords but are organized in different categories. Finding these passwords follows a similar process to viewing website passwords but requires knowing where to look in the Keychain interface.

In Keychain Access, the left sidebar shows multiple category options. Under the "Keychains" section, you'll typically see "login," "Local Items," and sometimes "iCloud." Most of your personal passwords are stored in the "login" keychain. Within this keychain, you can filter by password type using the categories on the right side. Click on "Passwords" to see all password-type entries. If
