Learn How to Use Your Walmart Gift Card

Understanding What a Walmart Gift Card Is and How It Works

A Walmart gift card is a prepaid card that holds a dollar amount you can use to purchase items at Walmart stores or on Walmart.com. When someone gives you a gift card or when you purchase one yourself, the card contains a specific balance of money that you can spend on virtually anything Walmart sells—from groceries and clothing to electronics and household items. The card works like a simplified payment method: you load it with money, and that money decreases with each purchase you make.

Walmart offers several types of gift cards to choose from. The standard physical gift card comes in various denominations, typically ranging from $15 to $500. You can purchase these cards at Walmart registers, at customer service desks, or even online. Digital gift cards are another option—these are delivered via email and can be used for online purchases or printed out for in-store use. Some people receive Walmart gift cards as gifts during holidays, birthdays, or special occasions.

The balance on your gift card remains available until you use it completely or until the card expires. Unlike credit cards, gift cards don't charge interest or monthly fees. There's no credit check required, and you don't need a bank account to use one. The card is tied to the specific dollar amount loaded onto it at purchase or receipt. This makes gift cards particularly useful for budgeting, since you can only spend what's on the card.

Gift cards can be used at any Walmart location nationwide, and most Walmart gift cards work both in physical stores and online. Some specialty Walmart locations or Sam's Club locations may have different policies, so it's worth checking if you shop at those locations. The straightforward nature of gift cards makes them a popular choice for both gift-givers and recipients.

Takeaway: A Walmart gift card is a prepaid card loaded with a specific dollar amount that you can use to purchase items at Walmart stores and online. Understanding the basic mechanics—that it works like a stored balance you gradually spend down—helps you use it effectively.

Checking Your Walmart Gift Card Balance

Before you make a purchase, you'll want to know how much money remains on your gift card. Walmart provides several straightforward methods to check your balance, and each one takes just a few minutes. Knowing your balance prevents the awkwardness of having your card declined at checkout when you don't have enough funds remaining.

The easiest way to check your balance is to visit Walmart.com and use their gift card balance checker. On the Walmart website, look for the gift card section, usually found in the customer service or help area. You'll be prompted to enter your gift card number (the 16-digit number on the front of your card) and the security code on the back. Within seconds, the website will display your remaining balance. This method works 24/7 and doesn't require you to go to a store.

If you prefer to check your balance in person, you can visit any Walmart store and ask a cashier or customer service representative to scan your card. They can tell you the exact balance remaining. This is especially useful if you're already planning to shop and want to know your balance before you start selecting items. Simply hand your card to a cashier and ask them to check it for you—there's no charge for this service.

You can also check your balance by calling Walmart's gift card customer service line. The phone number is typically printed on the back of your physical gift card. When you call, have your gift card number and security code ready. A representative will look up your balance and provide the information over the phone. This option works well if you don't have internet access or prefer speaking with someone directly.

For digital gift cards sent via email, the balance information should be included in the email or accessible through a link provided in that email. Keep these emails in a safe place so you can reference your card number and balance whenever needed.

Takeaway: You can check your Walmart gift card balance through the Walmart website, by asking a cashier in-store, by calling customer service, or through your email confirmation if you have a digital card. Choose whichever method is most convenient for you.

Using Your Gift Card for In-Store Purchases

Shopping in a Walmart store with your gift card is a simple process that works much like using a debit card. When you're ready to pay at checkout, let the cashier know you'll be using a gift card. Hand them your physical card, and they'll scan it just like they would scan a credit or debit card. The purchase amount will be deducted from your card's balance, and you'll receive a receipt showing what you spent and how much balance remains on your card.

There are a few important things to understand about using your gift card in-store. First, you can use your gift card to purchase almost anything at Walmart, including groceries, clothing, electronics, pharmacy items, and household goods. However, certain restrictions apply to some items. For example, you cannot use a Walmart gift card to purchase other gift cards, lottery tickets, or certain regulated items like alcohol or tobacco (depending on your location and local laws). Additionally, you cannot use a Walmart gift card to make payments on accounts or services like Walmart credit cards or utility bills.

If your purchase total is less than your remaining gift card balance, the transaction processes normally and your balance decreases by that amount. If your purchase is more than what's left on your card, you can combine your gift card with another payment method. Simply tell the cashier the amount you want to use from your gift card, and they'll process it. Then you can pay the remaining balance with cash, a credit card, a debit card, or another payment method. This flexibility makes it easy to use your gift card even when you're shopping for more than its remaining value.

If you lose your physical gift card, you should report it to Walmart as soon as possible. While Walmart doesn't replace lost or stolen cards, registering your card information with the retailer can help protect your remaining balance. Keep your receipt from your gift card purchase or your confirmation email for digital cards, as this information may be needed if you need to dispute a transaction or recover your balance.

Takeaway: Using your gift card in-store involves handing it to the cashier for scanning, just like a regular payment card. You can combine it with other payment methods if needed, but remember that restrictions apply to certain purchases like other gift cards or lottery tickets.

Using Your Gift Card for Online Shopping

Shopping online with your Walmart gift card is just as straightforward as using it in a store. When you're ready to checkout on Walmart.com, you'll add items to your cart as usual. During the payment step, Walmart will provide you with payment options. Look for the option to pay with a Walmart gift card or add a gift card as your payment method. You'll enter your gift card number (the 16-digit number on the front of the card) and the security code from the back.

If your gift card balance covers your entire purchase, the transaction will complete and your order will be processed. The funds will be deducted from your card, and you'll receive a confirmation email with your order details. If your gift card balance doesn't cover the full amount, you can add another payment method to cover the difference. Walmart will deduct the full gift card balance first, and then charge the remaining amount to your alternate payment method.

One useful feature of online shopping is that you can see your purchase total before you finalize the transaction. This gives you time to check whether you need to combine your gift card with another payment method. If you're unsure about your balance, you can check it before adding your card as a payment method, which prevents any surprises at checkout.

When shopping online, remember that some items available online may not be available in stores, and vice versa. Additionally, online orders typically require a shipping address and may involve delivery fees or shipping times you should consider. Walmart offers various shipping options, some of which are free for eligible items or with a Walmart+ membership. Your gift card can be used regardless of the shipping method you choose.

Digital gift cards work the same way as physical gift cards for online purchases. When you receive a digital gift card via email, you'll have a card number and security code to enter during checkout, just like with a physical card. The process is identical, and your balance will be deducted from your digital card just as it would from a physical one.

Takeaway: Online purchases with your gift card work similarly to in-store purchases—
