Learn How to Use Chrome's Bookmark Toolbar
Understanding Chrome's Bookmark Toolbar Basics
Google Chrome's bookmark toolbar is a feature built directly into the browser that displays your saved websites in a row just below the address bar. This toolbar provides quick access to your most-visited or most-important web pages without needing to open a menu or search through folders. When you first open Chrome, the bookmark toolbar may not be visible, but once you turn it on, it becomes a permanent part of your browser interface.

The bookmark toolbar differs from Chrome's main bookmark menu. While the bookmark menu can hold hundreds or even thousands of bookmarks organized in folders, the toolbar itself typically displays between 10 and 20 bookmarks depending on your screen width and how much space other browser elements use. This limited space makes the toolbar ideal for sites you visit regularly, such as email accounts, work platforms, news websites, or social media pages.
Chrome stores your bookmarks in your Google account when you sign in. This means if you use Chrome on multiple devices—a laptop, tablet, or work computer—your bookmarks sync across all of them. However, the bookmark toolbar is one exception: toolbar placement and organization are device-specific. If you add a bookmark to your toolbar on your laptop, it won't automatically appear on your tablet's toolbar, though the bookmark itself will be saved to your account.
The toolbar works the same way on Windows, Mac, and Linux versions of Chrome. Mobile versions of Chrome (on phones and tablets) do not display a traditional bookmark toolbar, though you can still access bookmarks through the browser menu. This guide focuses on the desktop version of Chrome.
Practical Takeaway: Think of your bookmark toolbar as prime real estate in your browser. Reserve these spots for the 10-15 websites you visit most frequently or need fastest access to during your day.
How to Show and Enable the Bookmark Toolbar
By default, Google Chrome hides the bookmark toolbar to maximize the space available for web content. To show it, you need to access Chrome's menu and enable the toolbar. This process takes fewer than 30 seconds and works the same way on any computer running Chrome.

To display the bookmark toolbar, click the three-line menu icon (called the "hamburger menu") located in the top-right corner of your Chrome window. This menu button appears next to the profile icon and any extensions you've installed. Once you click it, a dropdown menu appears with various options including "Settings," "History," "Downloads," and more.
Look for an option labeled "Bookmarks" in this dropdown menu. Hovering over or clicking on "Bookmarks" reveals a submenu with additional options. Within this submenu, you'll find "Show bookmarks bar." Click on this option, and the bookmark toolbar will immediately appear below your address bar. You'll know it worked when you see a new row appear displaying any bookmarks you've previously saved.
If you've never created bookmarks before, your toolbar will appear empty or show only default bookmarks that Chrome may have included. This is normal. You can begin adding bookmarks to fill the toolbar using methods described in later sections of this guide.
If you want to hide the bookmark toolbar again—for example, to regain screen space—you follow the same process: click the menu, go to Bookmarks, and click "Show bookmarks bar" again to toggle it off. The toolbar disappears, but all your bookmarks remain saved in your account and can be accessed through the Bookmarks menu.
Practical Takeaway: Enabling the bookmark toolbar is a one-time setup step that takes seconds. Once enabled, it stays visible every time you open Chrome unless you deliberately turn it off.
Adding Websites to Your Bookmark Toolbar
Once your bookmark toolbar is visible, you can begin adding websites to it. There are multiple methods to create bookmarks, and each has different benefits depending on your situation. The most common method is using the star icon that appears in the address bar.

When you're viewing a website you want to bookmark, look at the right side of the address bar. You'll see a star icon that's either filled (if the site is already bookmarked) or outlined (if it's not). Click on this star. A small window immediately pops up asking where you want to save the bookmark. At the top of this window, you'll see a dropdown menu that likely says "Other bookmarks" or shows a folder name. Click this dropdown to reveal your bookmark folders and options.
To add the bookmark to your toolbar, select "Bookmarks bar" from this dropdown menu. You can also give the bookmark a custom name in the text field provided—for example, changing "Gmail" to "Email" or "The New York Times" to "News." After you've chosen the location and named your bookmark (the default name is the website's title), click "Done" or press Enter. The bookmark is now saved to your toolbar.
An alternative method involves using keyboard shortcuts. On Windows, press Ctrl+D to bookmark the current page. On Mac, press Cmd+D. This opens the same bookmark dialog box. Select "Bookmarks bar" and click "Done."
You can also create bookmarks through the Bookmarks menu. Click the menu button, go to Bookmarks, and select "Bookmark this page." This achieves the same result as using the star icon or keyboard shortcut.
A third method, useful for bookmarking multiple sites at once, involves right-clicking any link on a webpage. A context menu appears with an option to "Bookmark link." This saves the link without needing to visit the page first. However, this method saves to your main bookmark folders rather than directly to the toolbar.
Practical Takeaway: The star icon in the address bar is the fastest way to add bookmarks to your toolbar. With practice, using Ctrl+D or Cmd+D becomes even quicker.
Organizing and Managing Toolbar Bookmarks
As you add bookmarks to your toolbar, you may want to reorganize them into a specific order, rename them, or create folders within the toolbar itself. Chrome allows significant customization of how your toolbar looks and functions.

To move a bookmark to a different position on your toolbar, click and hold the bookmark with your mouse, then drag it to the new location. Other bookmarks shift to make room. This process is called "drag and drop" and works smoothly in Chrome. You can rearrange bookmarks at any time to match your preferences or workflow. For example, you might place your most-used sites on the left and less-frequent ones toward the right.
To rename a bookmark, right-click it and select "Edit" from the menu that appears. A dialog box opens where you can change the bookmark's name. This is useful for shortening long website names or creating personalized labels. For instance, you might rename "Slack" to "Work Chat" or "GitHub" to "Code Repository" to make labels more specific to your needs.
To delete a bookmark, right-click it and select "Delete" from the menu. The bookmark is immediately removed from your toolbar. However, if you've also saved this bookmark in other folders, it remains in those locations. Deleting from the toolbar doesn't delete it from your entire account.
Chrome also allows you to create folders within your toolbar itself. To do this, access Chrome's full bookmark manager by clicking the menu, going to Bookmarks, and selecting "Bookmark Manager." In this manager, you can create new folders and drag bookmarks into them. When you create a folder in the "Bookmarks bar" section, that folder appears on your toolbar as a small folder icon. Clicking the folder shows all bookmarks inside it in a dropdown menu. This approach helps you stay organized when you have many bookmarks to manage.
You can edit bookmark details—including the website URL, the name, and its location—through the Bookmark Manager. Right-click any bookmark and select "Edit," or simply double-click it.
Practical Takeaway: Spend a few minutes organizing your toolbar bookmarks into a logical order that matches how you work. Folder icons on your toolbar can group related bookmarks and keep your toolbar from becoming cluttered.
Using Bookmark Folders and Subfolders on Your Toolbar
While individual bookmarks on your toolbar are helpful, bookmark folders add another layer of organization. A folder on your toolbar appears as a small folder icon that reveals its contents when you click it. This approach lets you store many bookmarks
