Learn How to Use Apple Pay on Amazon

Understanding Apple Pay and Amazon's Payment Options

Apple Pay is a digital wallet service created by Apple that lets you store payment card information on your iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, or Mac. Instead of entering your credit or debit card details manually, you can use Apple Pay to complete purchases with a quick tap or face recognition. As of 2024, Apple Pay is accepted by millions of merchants worldwide, though the availability on specific platforms like Amazon requires understanding how the service integrates with different retailers.

Amazon, the largest e-commerce platform in the United States with over 300 million products available, has its own payment ecosystem. The company processes transactions through multiple payment methods including credit cards, debit cards, Amazon Pay (their own payment service), and gift cards. However, Amazon does not currently accept Apple Pay as a direct payment method on its website or main mobile app. This is an important distinction that many users wonder about when they have Apple Pay set up on their devices.

The reason for this limitation relates to how Amazon manages its payment infrastructure. Amazon has invested heavily in developing its own payment solutions and prefers to keep customer payment data within its own systems rather than routing transactions through third-party digital wallets. This business model allows Amazon to maintain direct relationships with customers and control the data associated with their purchases.

Understanding this landscape helps explain why Apple Pay cannot be used directly on Amazon's main platform, though there are alternative approaches and workarounds that may interest users who prefer digital wallet payments. The relationship between these two tech giants continues to evolve, and payment options may change over time.

Practical Takeaway: Apple Pay works with many retailers but not directly with Amazon's primary shopping platform. Before attempting to use Apple Pay on Amazon, it's worth knowing this limitation exists so you can explore alternative payment methods that are actually supported.

Where Apple Pay Works and Where It Doesn't on Amazon

Apple Pay is accepted at a vast network of physical and online retailers. In physical stores, you can use Apple Pay at most major chains including Target, Walmart, Best Buy, CVS, Whole Foods, and thousands of smaller merchants. Online, Apple Pay works with retailers like DoorDash, Uber, Spotify, and many app-based services. The key factor is whether the retailer has integrated Apple Pay into their payment processing system.

On Amazon specifically, the situation varies depending on where you're shopping. The main Amazon.com website does not accept Apple Pay. The standard Amazon mobile app for iPhone and Android also does not process Apple Pay payments. However, there are some Amazon-related services where Apple Pay may work in certain circumstances. For example, if you purchase Amazon gift cards through Apple's App Store using Apple Pay, those funds can then be applied to your Amazon account.

Amazon Prime Video, which is a separate service owned by Amazon, may accept Apple Pay in some regions when accessed through certain apps, though this varies by location and how the app is configured. Similarly, Amazon-owned services like Audible have different payment structures depending on how you access them.

The distinction matters because many people assume that since Apple Pay works almost everywhere else, it should work on Amazon. The reality is that Amazon has deliberately excluded third-party digital wallets from its primary payment flow. This decision reflects Amazon's broader strategy of maintaining control over customer payment data and the checkout experience.

Practical Takeaway: Check the specific Amazon service you're using before assuming Apple Pay won't work. While it doesn't work on the main Amazon platform, exploring indirect methods through gift cards or other Amazon services might offer what you're looking for.

Using Apple Pay to Purchase Amazon Gift Cards

One effective workaround for paying with Apple Pay on Amazon is to purchase Amazon gift cards using Apple Pay, then apply those funds to your Amazon account. This method gives you the benefits of using your digital wallet while still completing Amazon purchases. Here's how this process works in detail.

First, open the Apple App Store on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac. Navigate to the "Apps" or "Search" section and look for "Amazon.com" or browse to find the official Amazon app. Within the App Store, you can often find digital gift cards for sale, including Amazon gift cards. Alternatively, you might find third-party retailers selling digital Amazon gift cards through the App Store or other platforms.

When you select an Amazon gift card purchase, the App Store will present payment options. At this point, you can choose Apple Pay as your payment method. Complete the transaction using your stored payment information in Apple Pay—whether that's a credit card, debit card, or other approved payment method. The purchase typically processes within seconds.

Once the transaction completes, you'll receive a digital gift card code, usually displayed on your screen or sent via email. Copy this code carefully. Then open the Amazon app or go to Amazon.com, sign into your account, and navigate to "Your Account" or "Gift Cards." Look for an option like "Redeem a Gift Card" or "Enter a promotional code." Paste or type the gift card code into the designated field.

The gift card balance will be added to your Amazon account immediately. From that point forward, when you make purchases on Amazon, the system will automatically use your gift card balance first before requesting any other payment method. This approach lets you use Apple Pay indirectly while still shopping on Amazon's platform.

Practical Takeaway: Purchasing Amazon gift cards through Apple Pay is a straightforward workaround that takes just a few minutes and gives you the convenience of digital wallet payments for your Amazon shopping.

Setting Up and Managing Your Apple Pay Payment Methods

Before you can use Apple Pay anywhere—including to purchase Amazon gift cards—you need to set it up on your device. The process differs slightly depending on whether you're using an iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, or Mac, but the basic steps are similar across all devices.

On an iPhone or iPad, open the Wallet app (it looks like a small wallet icon on your home screen). Tap the plus sign or "Add" button to begin adding a card. You can add credit cards, debit cards, or even certain transit cards depending on your location and financial institution. When prompted, you can either manually enter your card details or use your device's camera to photograph the card—the system will automatically read the numbers.

Apple will ask you to verify your identity, typically through your financial institution's app or through a verification code sent to your phone. Some banks support immediate verification, while others may require a phone call or additional steps. This security measure protects your account and prevents unauthorized use.

On an Apple Watch, open the Watch app on your paired iPhone, navigate to Wallet and Apple Pay, and follow similar steps to add cards. Your Apple Watch can then access these payment methods independently, allowing you to pay using your watch without carrying your phone.

For Mac, you can add cards to your Apple Pay account by going to System Settings, then Wallet and Apple Pay. You can then use these payment methods when shopping online on your Mac.

After setting up Apple Pay, you can view, remove, or manage your stored cards anytime. If a card is lost or compromised, you can remove it from Apple Pay immediately without affecting your actual bank account. You can also set a default payment method and adjust which cards are available on which devices.

Practical Takeaway: Spending five to ten minutes setting up Apple Pay properly will save you time on future purchases. Make sure all your preferred cards are added and that you understand how to use Apple Pay on your specific devices before attempting to make purchases.

Security Considerations When Using Apple Pay

Apple Pay is designed with multiple layers of security that make it safer than simply handing over a physical card or typing card details into a website. Understanding these security features can help you feel more confident when using digital wallet payments.

When you add a card to Apple Pay, Apple does not store your actual card number. Instead, a tokenized version of your card is created—a unique code that represents your card without exposing the actual numbers. When you make a purchase using Apple Pay, the merchant receives this token rather than your real card details. This means even if a merchant's system is hacked, your actual card information is not compromised.

Every Apple Pay transaction requires authentication. On an iPhone, you must use Face ID, Touch ID, or enter your device passcode. On an Apple Watch, you typically need to double-click the side button. This requirement means that even if someone gains access to your phone, they cannot use Apple Pay without your biometric data or passcode.
