Learn How to Use a Pom Pom Maker Tool

Understanding Pom Pom Maker Tools and Their Purpose

A pom pom maker is a simple craft tool designed to help you create fluffy, spherical decorative balls from yarn. These tools have been around since the 1950s and remain popular for both beginners and experienced crafters. The basic concept involves winding yarn around the tool's arms to build up layers, then cutting through the wound yarn and tying it in the middle to form a compact ball shape.

Pom pom makers come in various sizes, typically ranging from one inch to three inches in diameter, with some specialty versions going larger. The most common design consists of two interlocking circular or clover-shaped pieces that open and close. When you open the pieces, you'll see curved arms where you wind the yarn. The size of the maker determines the finished pom pom size—a one-inch maker creates pom poms about the size of a golf ball, while larger makers produce bigger, fluffier results.

These tools serve multiple purposes in crafting. People use pom poms for decorating clothing like hats, scarves, and sweaters. They work well for craft projects, including creating stuffed animals, garlands, and decorative wall hangings. Some crafters make pom poms for pet toys, as cats and small dogs enjoy batting them around. Others use them in school projects, seasonal decorations, or gift embellishments.

The beauty of pom pom makers lies in their affordability and reusability. A single maker costs between three and ten dollars and lasts for years. You can make hundreds of pom poms with one tool, making it economical compared to buying pre-made pom poms, which cost fifty cents to two dollars each depending on size and quality.

Practical Takeaway: Before purchasing a pom pom maker, think about the finished size you want. If you're making pom poms for hat decoration, a one to one-and-a-half inch maker works well. For larger projects like wall hangings, consider a two to three-inch maker for more dramatic results.

Selecting the Right Materials and Yarn Types

The yarn you choose dramatically affects your finished pom pom's appearance and texture. Not all yarns work equally well with pom pom makers. Understanding yarn characteristics helps you achieve the results you want. Weight, fiber content, and texture all influence how your pom pom turns out.

Worsted weight yarn is the most popular choice for pom pom making. This medium-weight yarn (category 4 on the yarn weight scale) creates full, bouncy pom poms quickly and efficiently. Acrylic worsted weight yarn is particularly beginner-friendly because it's affordable, durable, and comes in hundreds of colors. A single skein typically costs between one and three dollars and produces multiple pom poms depending on their size.

Yarn weight categories affect your results significantly. Bulky or chunky yarns (category 5 and above) create very full pom poms but require fewer wraps around the maker. Sport weight or fingering weight yarns (categories 2 and 3) produce denser, more compact pom poms that need many more wraps to fill the maker. DK weight yarn falls nicely in the middle range. Testing different weights helps you discover your preferences—some crafters prefer the fluffy appearance of worsted weight, while others like the tighter look of fingering weight.

Fiber content matters for durability and aesthetics. Acrylic yarn offers budget-friendly options and excellent color selection. Wool creates pom poms with a more refined appearance but costs more and requires careful washing. Cotton yarn produces lighter-weight pom poms suitable for summer accessories. Blended yarns combining acrylic and wool offer middle-ground benefits. Novelty yarns like eyelash yarn or fuzzy yarn create textured pom poms with unique visual interest, though they can be trickier to work with.

Color considerations expand your creative possibilities. Solid colors create classic looks, while variegated yarn (yarn with multiple colors along its length) produces multicolored pom poms. Purchasing a variety pack of acrylic yarn lets you experiment with different colors and weights without significant expense. Most craft stores offer starter sets containing eight to twenty colors for five to fifteen dollars.

Practical Takeaway: Start with worsted weight acrylic yarn in your favorite colors. These yarns are forgiving for beginners, widely available, affordable, and create consistently beautiful results across all pom pom maker sizes.

Step-by-Step Process for Using Your Pom Pom Maker

Using a pom pom maker involves a straightforward sequence that becomes quicker with practice. Most crafters complete one pom pom in five to ten minutes once they develop a rhythm. Understanding each step prevents common mistakes and produces professional-looking results.

Step one involves opening your pom pom maker. Most designs feature two pieces that separate completely or fold open like a book. Ensure both pieces are fully extended so you can see the curved winding arms clearly. Some people prefer holding the two pieces in their hands while others place them on a flat surface. Choose whichever feels most comfortable and stable for you.

Step two is winding the yarn. Start by tucking the yarn end between the two pieces of the maker, securing it against the curved arm. Begin wrapping yarn around the first arm in a spiral pattern, working from one side to the other. The goal is covering the arm completely with yarn. Wind firmly but not so tightly that you strain the tool. This typically requires wrapping around the arm twelve to thirty times depending on your yarn weight and desired pom pom fullness.

Step three continues wrapping on the second arm. After covering the first arm, move to the second one and repeat the winding process. Wind an equal number of times to keep the pom pom balanced. Some crafters count their wraps aloud to ensure consistency between sides.

Step four is the critical cutting phase. Using sharp scissors (craft scissors work perfectly), carefully cut through all the wrapped yarn on the outer edges where the two pieces meet. Insert your scissor tips between the two maker pieces and cut slowly and deliberately. Cut all the way around both sides, working from one position until you've separated all the wound yarn from the maker's arms.

Step five involves securing the pom pom. After cutting, your wound yarn will want to fall apart. Before it does, take a length of yarn (approximately six inches) and wrap it tightly around the middle between the two maker pieces, pulling with firm tension. Tie this wrapping yarn in a knot, then a second knot for security. This binding holds all the cut strands together.

Step six is removal. Gently open the maker pieces and slide out your newly formed pom pom. The binding yarn creates two loose ends—these are useful for attaching the pom pom to projects.

Step seven involves fluffing and trimming. Your finished pom pom will look somewhat flat and shaggy initially. Gently pull and fluff the strands outward to create a rounder shape. Using scissors, carefully trim any loose or overly long strands to create an even, spherical appearance. This shaping step takes the finished look from homemade to polished.

Practical Takeaway: Practice your first pom pom with thick worsted weight yarn, as it requires fewer wraps and forgives minor technique issues. Keep your scissors sharp—dull scissors make the cutting phase frustrating and may bend yarn instead of cutting cleanly.

Troubleshooting Common Pom Pom Problems

Even experienced crafters encounter occasional issues when making pom poms. Recognizing problems and knowing how to adjust your technique prevents frustration and waste. Most problems stem from yarn selection, winding tension, or insufficient wrapping.

Loose, floppy pom poms usually result from insufficient yarn wrapping. If your finished pom pom feels thin and doesn't hold its shape, you didn't wind enough yarn around the maker arms. Solution: wrap significantly more times on your next attempt. As a general guideline, each arm should be completely covered with yarn with no visible maker showing through. If you can see the plastic or cardboard of the maker, wrap more.

Pom poms that won't hold their round shape after fluffing may suffer from inadequate binding tension. When you tie the center yarn, pull it very firmly—
