Learn How to Update Your USPS Address

Overview: Why Updating Your USPS Address Matters

Your mailing address is one of the most important pieces of information the U.S. Postal Service maintains. When you move to a new location, updating your address with USPS ensures that mail carriers deliver your mail to the correct place. Without a change of address on file, your mail may go to your old residence, get returned to senders, or become lost in the postal system.

According to USPS data, approximately 40 million Americans move each year. Many of these moves involve residential relocations that require address updates. The USPS processes millions of address changes annually through their Change of Address (COA) service. This service is particularly important for receiving critical documents like tax returns, medical bills, insurance statements, bank statements, and legal notices.

When you notify USPS of your move, the postal service creates a forwarding record that lasts for 12 months. During this period, mail addressed to your old location will be automatically forwarded to your new address. However, not all mail gets forwarded—some senders, particularly government agencies and financial institutions, may need to be notified separately about your address change.

Understanding how USPS address updates work can help you avoid missed bills, lost correspondence, and delivery delays. The process itself takes only a few minutes and can be done through multiple methods depending on your preferences and circumstances.

Practical Takeaway: Update your address with USPS within the first few days after moving to ensure continuous mail delivery and minimize the risk of lost or misdelivered mail.

Understanding the USPS Change of Address Service

The USPS Change of Address service, often referred to as COA, is the official method for notifying the postal service about your new residence. This service is available for residential moves, business relocations, and temporary address changes. The service is operated by USPS and represents the standard way to inform the postal system about where you now receive mail.

When you file a change of address, USPS creates a forwarding record in their system. Mail carriers and postal facilities across the country use this record to redirect mail that arrives at your old address. The forwarding period typically lasts for 12 months from the effective date you choose. After 12 months, the forwarding record expires, and mail addressed to your old location will no longer be forwarded.

USPS distinguishes between several types of address changes. A permanent change of address applies when you're moving to a new residence and expect to stay there long-term. A temporary change of address, also called a seasonal address change, is used when you'll be away from your primary residence for a limited time—such as during winter months or for a work assignment. You can also file a change of address for a business if you're relocating your company to a different location.

The cost of filing a change of address varies by method. When you file online through the official USPS website, there is a fee of approximately $1.10. Filing through the mail costs around $1.10 as well. Visiting a local post office in person to file a change of address typically costs around $1.10 as well, though some post offices may have slightly different fees. These fees are subject to change and may vary by location.

Understanding these distinctions helps you choose the right type of address change for your situation. A permanent change is appropriate for most residential moves, while a temporary change works better if you're planning to return to your current address.

Practical Takeaway: Choose the type of address change that matches your situation—permanent for moves you plan to stay with long-term, or temporary for brief relocations or seasonal moves.

Method 1: Filing Your Address Change Online

The most convenient way to update your address with USPS is through their official website. The online change of address service is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, allowing you to file your change whenever it's convenient for you. The online process typically takes between 5 and 10 minutes to complete and requires basic information about you and your move.

To file online, you'll need to visit the official USPS Change of Address page. The website requires you to provide specific information about your current address and your new address. You'll need to specify an effective date—the date when you want the forwarding to begin. USPS allows you to set the effective date for up to 30 days in the future, which is helpful if you're planning your move ahead of time.

The online process requires you to verify your identity before completing the change of address. USPS uses identity verification methods to prevent fraudulent address changes. You may be asked to provide information such as your driver's license number, state of residence, or other personal identifying information. This verification step protects your mail from being redirected by unauthorized individuals.

After you submit your online change of address request, you'll receive a confirmation page with a reference number. You should save or print this confirmation number for your records. USPS will also send a confirmation letter to both your old and new addresses to verify the change. The confirmation letter arriving at your new address serves as proof that the change has been processed.

One advantage of filing online is that the change typically becomes effective quickly—often within one to two business days. This means mail carriers will begin forwarding your mail to your new address relatively soon after you file. The online service also provides a straightforward record of when you filed and what date the forwarding begins.

Practical Takeaway: File your address change online if you want the quickest processing time and don't mind paying a small fee for the convenience of updating from home or on your mobile device.

Method 2: Filing at Your Local Post Office

If you prefer to handle your address change in person, you can visit your local post office to file a change of address. Most post offices in the United States offer this service during their regular business hours. Visiting in person allows you to speak with a postal clerk who can answer any questions about the process and ensure that your information is entered correctly into the system.

To file at a post office, you'll need to locate your nearest branch. You can find post office locations and hours using the USPS store locator tool on their website. Simply enter your zip code or city name to find nearby facilities. Many people find it convenient to visit the post office when they're handling other mail-related tasks, such as purchasing stamps or mailing packages.

When you arrive at the post office, you'll need to complete a PS Form 3575, which is the official Change of Address form. The form asks for your current address, your new address, and the date you want the forwarding to begin. You can request this form from a postal clerk, or in some cases, it may be available on a counter near the service area. If you've brought the form from home, you can present your completed form to the clerk.

The postal clerk will review your form to ensure all information is accurate and complete. They'll verify your identity using a photo ID, typically a driver's license or state-issued identification card. This verification is required regardless of which method you use to file your change of address. The clerk will then process your request, and you'll receive a receipt showing your confirmation number.

Filing in person offers several potential advantages. You receive immediate confirmation that your form was submitted correctly. You can ask the postal clerk questions about how the forwarding will work, how long it takes to become effective, or whether you need to notify other organizations about your move. Some people also find it reassuring to handle this task face-to-face rather than online.

Practical Takeaway: Visit your post office in person if you have questions about the process, want immediate confirmation, or prefer handling important address information with a postal representative.

Method 3: Filing by Mail and Understanding Processing Times

For those who prefer a traditional approach, USPS allows you to file a change of address by mail. This method involves obtaining the Change of Address form (PS Form 3575), completing it with your information, and mailing it to the appropriate USPS processing center. While this method takes longer than online or in-person filing, it's an option for people who don't have internet access or prefer mailing documents.
