Learn How to Update Your IRS Address Information

Understanding Why the IRS Needs Your Current Address

The Internal Revenue Service maintains address information for every taxpayer who files a return or has an account with the agency. Your address on file determines where the IRS sends important documents, including tax refunds, notices about payment due, correspondence regarding audits, and information about tax credits you may receive. When your address changes—whether you move to a new home, relocate to a different state, or update a business location—it's important to notify the IRS so mail reaches you without delay.

The IRS uses your address for multiple purposes beyond just mailing documents. Tax refunds sent to an outdated address may be returned to the IRS, delaying your money for weeks or months. Official notices about tax matters require you to receive them at your correct address; missing these notices can result in additional penalties or missed opportunities to respond to the IRS. If you're a business owner, the address on file affects where business correspondence arrives and how the IRS contacts you regarding payroll taxes or other business-related matters.

Many people don't realize how long mail can take to reach them if their address is wrong. Even with mail forwarding through the postal service, IRS mail can be delayed or returned as undeliverable. This creates gaps in communication that may cost you money. For instance, if the IRS sends a notice about a tax credit you're entitled to but you never receive it because your address is outdated, you might miss the deadline to claim it or respond to an inquiry.

Updating your address is a straightforward process that takes only a few minutes. The IRS offers several methods to make this change, and you can choose the option that works best for your situation. Whether you prefer to submit information by mail, phone, or online, the process is designed to be accessible to all taxpayers.

Practical Takeaway: Updating your IRS address promptly after moving ensures you receive tax refunds, important notices, and other correspondence without delay.

How to Update Your Address Online Through IRS.gov

The IRS website offers an online option for updating your address information directly through your account. To use this method, you'll need to create or log into an IRS account on IRS.gov. The process begins by going to the IRS website and selecting the "Sign In" option, which takes you to a login portal where you can enter your credentials or create a new account if you don't have one yet.

Once you're signed in to your IRS account, you'll navigate to the section that manages your personal or business information. The exact location of this feature may vary slightly depending on whether you're updating information for an individual tax return or a business account. Look for options labeled "Profile," "Account Settings," or "Personal Information." From there, you should see a field for your current address where you can edit the information.

When updating your address online, the system will ask you to provide your complete new address, including street address, city, state, and ZIP code. Make sure to enter your information exactly as it appears on mail you receive, including any apartment numbers, suite numbers, or P.O. Box information if that's where you receive mail. Accuracy is essential because the IRS system matches this information with other records you've filed, such as tax returns.

After you've entered your new address and submitted the change through the online portal, the IRS typically processes the update within a few weeks. During this time, it's possible you may still receive mail at your old address, as the change propagates through their system. Keep this in mind and make arrangements to forward mail if necessary. The online method leaves you with a digital record of your submission, which can be useful for your records.

One important note: the online address change option through IRS.gov works best for individual taxpayers who maintain a personal account on the website. Business owners or those managing complex tax situations may find that calling the IRS or submitting a paper form is more straightforward for their circumstances.

Practical Takeaway: Logging into your IRS account and updating your address through the website's profile settings provides a quick, documented way to notify the IRS of your move.

Submitting an Address Change by Phone or Mail

If you prefer not to update your address online, the IRS offers phone and mail options that work just as well. To change your address by phone, you can call the IRS directly using the phone number listed on your most recent tax return, notice, or the IRS website. When you call, you'll need to provide personal identification information to verify who you are, such as your Social Security number and date of birth. The IRS representative will then update your address in their system over the phone, and the change is typically processed right away or within a few business days.

Calling the IRS is often the fastest way to make an address change because the representative can confirm the update immediately and answer any questions you have during the same conversation. However, wait times can be long during peak tax season (January through April), so consider calling during summer or fall months if possible. When you call, have your new address written down so you can provide it clearly to the representative.

For those who prefer to submit their address change by mail, you can send a written request to the IRS service center that processes returns for your area. The request should include your full name, Social Security number, old address, and new address. You can send this information on a simple letter or postcard. The IRS will process your request and mail you a confirmation, though this method typically takes longer than phone or online updates—usually four to six weeks.

If you're changing your address because you've moved to a different state, be aware that your request may need to be routed to a different IRS service center. The IRS has regional service centers based on geographic location, and your request will be sent to the correct center based on your new state of residence. This doesn't delay the process, but it's good to understand why your mail might be routed differently.

When submitting information by mail, send your request to the address shown on your most recent IRS notice or tax return. Using certified mail or a tracking service can provide you with proof that the IRS received your request, which is useful if you ever need to verify that you notified them of your address change.

Practical Takeaway: Calling the IRS at the number on your tax return or sending a written request with your old and new address are reliable alternatives to updating online.

Updating Your Address on Tax Forms and Returns

If you're updating your address at the same time you're filing a tax return, you can make the change directly on the return form itself. When you complete Form 1040 (the main individual income tax return), Form 1120 (corporate return), or other tax forms, your current mailing address appears in the designated fields at the top of the form. Simply enter your new address on the form when you file your return, and the IRS will update their records based on the information provided.

This method of updating your address works well if your move timing coincides with when you're filing your taxes. For example, if you move in January and file your tax return in February, you can update your address on your return at that time. The IRS will process both your return and your address change together, ensuring that any correspondence related to that return goes to your new address.

However, if you've already filed your return for the year and then move, you shouldn't amend your return just to update your address. Instead, use one of the other methods described earlier—online through IRS.gov, by phone, or by mail. Amending a return is a formal process that should only be done if there are actual changes to your tax information, not simply to update your address.

If you file your taxes with a tax professional or through tax preparation software, let them know about your address change. The tax professional or software will ensure your new address is included on the return they file on your behalf. This is particularly important if you're moving and filing your return close together in time, as it ensures the IRS has your correct address from the start.

Keep in mind that if you file your return electronically, the address you provide will be transmitted to the IRS immediately. If you file a paper return, the address on your return becomes part of the official record when the IRS processes it. Either way, make sure the address on your tax form matches your actual current or soon-to-be residence.

Practical Takeaway: When filing a tax return, include your current address on the form so the IRS updates their records at
