Learn How to Uninstall Apps on Windows

Understanding Windows App Uninstallation: What You Need to Know

Uninstalling applications from Windows computers is a straightforward process that most users will need to perform at some point. Whether you want to free up storage space, remove software you no longer use, or troubleshoot problems with your system, learning how to uninstall apps properly matters. Windows provides several built-in methods to remove applications, and each approach works differently depending on the type of software you're removing.

Applications take up storage space on your computer's hard drive or solid-state drive. Over time, accumulating unused software can slow down your system's performance and consume valuable storage resources. According to a 2023 survey by Statista, the average Windows user has between 30 to 50 installed applications on their computer, though many remain unused. Properly removing these programs helps maintain your system's health and performance.

Understanding the different methods available to uninstall software matters because not all applications behave the same way. Some programs install completely through Windows and use the standard uninstall process. Others come from the Microsoft Store and follow different removal procedures. Some older or specialized software may require manual deletion of files. Knowing which method applies to your situation prevents confusion and ensures clean removal of unwanted software.

Practical takeaway: Before uninstalling any application, consider whether you might need it in the future. If you're unsure, you can free up space without uninstalling by moving files to external storage or cloud services. Uninstalling should be your choice when you're confident you no longer need the software.

Using Settings to Uninstall Traditional Windows Applications

The Settings application in Windows provides the most common and recommended method for removing traditional desktop applications. This approach works for programs installed through installer files, company websites, or physical media. To access this feature, click the Windows Start button and type "Settings" into the search box. Open the Settings application when it appears in your results.

Once Settings opens, navigate to the "Apps" section by clicking it in the sidebar. Within Apps, you'll see an "Installed apps" option that displays a complete list of all applications currently installed on your computer. Windows 10 shows this as "Apps & features," while Windows 11 calls it "Installed apps," but both function similarly. This list includes the size each application uses on your hard drive and the date it was installed.

To remove an application using this method, locate the program you want to uninstall from the list. Click on the application name to expand its options. You should see an "Uninstall" button appear. Click this button, and Windows will launch the application's uninstaller program. Some applications show additional options like "Repair" or "Modify," which allow you to fix corrupted installations or change which features are installed.

After clicking Uninstall, a dialog box may appear asking you to confirm the removal or requesting administrator permission. Administrator accounts have special permissions that allow them to make system changes. If prompted for permission, click "Yes" to proceed. The uninstaller will then remove the program files and associated data from your computer. This process typically takes anywhere from a few seconds to several minutes depending on the application's size.

Practical takeaway: The Settings method is the safest and cleanest way to remove most applications because the uninstaller handles all file removal automatically. Always use this method first before attempting other removal techniques, as it preserves system stability and removes programs completely.

Removing Apps from the Microsoft Store

Applications obtained through the Microsoft Store follow a different uninstallation process than traditional desktop programs. The Microsoft Store is Windows' official application marketplace where users can obtain both free and paid software. Microsoft Store apps, sometimes called "UWP apps" or "modern apps," integrate with Windows in a slightly different way than older desktop applications.

To uninstall a Microsoft Store app, open Settings and go to Apps > Installed apps, just as you would with traditional applications. Search through the list for the Store app you want to remove. When you locate it, click on it to expand the options. An "Uninstall" button should appear. Click it, and a confirmation dialog will ask whether you want to remove the application. Click "Uninstall" again to confirm.

Alternatively, you can uninstall Microsoft Store apps directly from the Start menu. Right-click on the app's tile or icon in your Start menu or Apps list. A context menu will appear with various options including "Uninstall." Click this option to remove the application. This method is often quicker if you're already looking at your installed apps in the Start menu.

Another approach involves accessing the Microsoft Store application itself. Open the Microsoft Store from your Start menu. Click on your account icon in the upper right corner and select "My library" or "Manage my apps." Find the application you want to remove from the list. Click on the three dots (ellipsis) next to the app name and select "Uninstall." This method works well if you want to review which Store apps you own before removing them.

Practical takeaway: Microsoft Store apps are simpler to uninstall than traditional programs because they contain all their files in one location. Removing them doesn't leave scattered files across your system, making the process cleaner and reducing the chance of errors or leftover fragments.

Manual Uninstallation and Removing Stubborn Applications

Occasionally, an application may refuse to uninstall through normal methods, or you might encounter an older program that lacks a proper uninstaller. In these situations, manual removal becomes necessary. This process involves locating and deleting application files directly from your computer's file system. Manual uninstallation requires more care than using built-in uninstallers because you must identify which files belong to the program and which files the system needs.

To find where applications are stored, open File Explorer by pressing Windows Key + E. Most traditional Windows applications install in the "Program Files" or "Program Files (x86)" folders on your C: drive. Navigate to one of these folders and search for the application you want to remove. You'll see folders for each installed program. Right-click on the folder belonging to the application you want to remove and select "Delete." Windows will move these files to the Recycle Bin, allowing recovery if needed.

For applications that still don't appear, use the search function in File Explorer. Click the search box and type the application name. This searches all files on your computer and may reveal additional folders or files related to the program. Some applications store data in the AppData folder, which is hidden by default. To show hidden files, click the "View" tab in File Explorer and check the "Hidden items" checkbox. Look in AppData > Local, AppData > LocalLow, or AppData > Roaming for folders matching the application name.

If an application truly refuses to uninstall, third-party uninstaller programs may help. Software like Revo Uninstaller, CCleaner, or IObit Uninstaller scans your system to find all files and registry entries associated with an application. These tools can remove stubborn programs that resist standard uninstallation. However, use caution with third-party uninstallers and research the tool's reputation before installation, as some uninstallers have been known to cause issues if used incorrectly.

Practical takeaway: Manual uninstallation should be your last resort after normal methods fail. Always back up important files before manually deleting program folders, and consider using specialized uninstaller software rather than manually deleting files if you're uncertain which files belong to the application.

Cleaning Up After Uninstallation: Registry and File Remnants

Even after uninstalling an application through proper channels, small file fragments and registry entries may remain on your system. The Windows Registry is a database that stores settings and configurations for your operating system and installed applications. When you uninstall a program, the uninstaller sometimes doesn't completely clean these registry entries. These leftover fragments rarely affect system performance, but they do occupy small amounts of storage space.

To view and potentially clean registry entries, you can use the built-in Registry Editor. Press Windows Key + R to open the Run dialog, type "regedit," and press Enter. This opens the Registry Editor, showing the Windows Registry in a folder-like structure. Look for entries related to the uninstalled application. Common locations include HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SOFTWARE and HKEY_CURRENT_USER > SOFTWARE. Right-click any entries related to the uninstalled program and select "Delete."
