Learn How to Turn Off Text-to-Speech Settings

Understanding Text-to-Speech Technology and Why You Might Want to Turn It Off

Text-to-speech (TTS) technology converts written words into spoken audio. Most modern devices—smartphones, tablets, computers, and smart speakers—include TTS features built into their operating systems. These tools read text aloud, which can be useful for people with vision loss or reading difficulties, but many users find TTS activates unexpectedly or interferes with their normal device use.

According to a 2023 survey by the American Foundation for the Blind, about 2.9 million Americans use screen readers and text-to-speech tools regularly. However, many more users have these features enabled by default without realizing it. TTS can activate during regular browsing, app usage, or when you accidentally trigger voice commands. This guide explains where to find and disable these settings across different devices and platforms.

Text-to-speech appears in different forms depending on your device. On smartphones, it might be called "Speak Screen," "TalkBack," or "VoiceOver." On computers, it could be labeled "Narrator," "NVDA," or "Read Aloud." Some browsers have built-in readers that offer TTS functionality. Smart speakers like Amazon Alexa and Google Home also use TTS, though these typically only speak when you ask them questions or they're providing information you requested.

Understanding where TTS lives on your specific device is the first step toward managing it. Different manufacturers place these settings in different locations. Some users turn off TTS because it drains battery life faster, consumes data bandwidth, or simply creates unwanted audio interruptions. Others disable it temporarily while troubleshooting other accessibility features.

Practical Takeaway: Before looking for the off switch, identify which TTS feature is actually running on your device. Is it a system-wide accessibility tool, a browser feature, or a smart speaker function? This determines where you'll find the settings to adjust.

Turning Off Text-to-Speech on iPhone and iPad

Apple's text-to-speech feature is called "Speak Screen" on iPhones and iPads. This feature is part of Apple's accessibility suite and can be activated by swiping down from the top corner of the screen with two fingers. If this gesture keeps triggering unwanted audio reading, you'll want to disable it.

To turn off Speak Screen on an iPhone or iPad, start by opening the Settings app. Navigate to Accessibility, which typically appears in the main settings menu. From there, select "Spoken Content." You'll see several options here, including "Speak Screen," "Speak Selection," "Typing Feedback," and "Audio Descriptions." The "Speak Screen" option is usually what causes automatic reading of content on your screen. Toggle this switch to the off position. This removes the two-finger swipe gesture that activates the feature.

Apple also offers "Speak Selection," which reads aloud any text you manually highlight with your finger. If you don't use this feature, you can turn it off in the same menu. Below these options, you'll find "Speaking Rate," which controls how fast the audio plays when TTS is active. Even if you keep TTS enabled for accessibility purposes, you can adjust this slider to make speech faster or slower based on your preference.

If you use Siri, Apple's voice assistant, note that disabling Speak Screen won't affect Siri's ability to respond to voice commands and provide spoken answers. These are separate features. Siri remains active unless you specifically disable voice assistant features in Settings under Siri and Search.

For iPad users, the process is identical. Some iPad models allow you to customize which corner gesture activates Speak Screen. If you've set up a custom gesture, you can change this in the Accessibility settings as well. This gives you more control over accidental activation of the feature.

Practical Takeaway: On Apple devices, open Settings > Accessibility > Spoken Content, then toggle off "Speak Screen" and any other TTS features you don't use. This prevents accidental audio activation while keeping other accessibility tools available.

Disabling Text-to-Speech on Android Devices

Android devices use a different name for their primary text-to-speech feature: "TalkBack." This is Google's screen reader and accessibility tool. TalkBack reads screen content aloud when activated, and like Apple's Speak Screen, it can sometimes activate unexpectedly. Android also includes a separate feature called "Select to Speak," which reads highlighted text, and many Android devices come with Google's built-in "Read Aloud" feature in Chrome browser.

To disable TalkBack on an Android phone or tablet, open Settings and look for "Accessibility" (sometimes labeled "Accessibility Services"). This menu varies slightly between manufacturers like Samsung, Google Pixel, and other Android brands, but the core location remains similar. Once in Accessibility, find "TalkBack" in the list of available services. Tap it, and you'll see a toggle switch at the top of the screen. Turn this switch off. Android will ask you to confirm this action, as TalkBack is a significant accessibility tool. Confirm that you want to disable it.

If you only want to disable certain TalkBack features rather than the entire service, you can adjust granular settings within the TalkBack menu. Options include controlling vibration feedback, sound feedback, and speech feedback. You can also modify the TalkBack gesture controls, which might help if certain gestures keep triggering unwanted audio.

For the "Select to Speak" feature, navigate to Accessibility > Select to Speak. Toggle this off if you don't want Android to read text you select with your finger. Similarly, if your phone has Google's "Read Aloud" feature (common on Pixel phones and in Chrome), this appears in different locations. In Chrome browser, it's typically in the menu under "Listen to this page." You can disable it by removing the feature from your Chrome settings or by not using that menu option.

Samsung devices specifically may have additional TTS options under "Voice Feedback" or "Samsung Accessibility." Check your device's manufacturer settings alongside the standard Android Accessibility menu. The specific location depends on which version of Android your device runs and which manufacturer customizations are installed.

Practical Takeaway: On Android, navigate to Settings > Accessibility > TalkBack and toggle it off. If you see related services like "Select to Speak" or browser-based "Read Aloud," disable those separately if needed. Always confirm the disable action when prompted.

Removing Text-to-Speech Features from Web Browsers

Web browsers increasingly include built-in text-to-speech features. Google Chrome has "Read Aloud," which reads web page content in a robotic but clear voice. Firefox has an experimental feature that performs similar functions. Safari on Mac includes "Speak Selection" integration. Microsoft Edge also offers reading tools with TTS capability. If you notice your browser suddenly starts reading web pages, these features may have been automatically enabled.

In Google Chrome, the "Read Aloud" feature typically appears in the menu (three dots in the upper right corner) under "Listen to this page." To prevent this from being easily accessible, you can manage Chrome extensions and features. Go to Settings in Chrome, then click "Advanced" to expand more options. Look for "Accessibility" settings. You can disable text-to-speech pronunciation here, though the feature name and location may vary depending on your Chrome version.

Firefox users can check whether text-to-speech is enabled by going to Settings, then clicking "Privacy and Security." Scroll to "Permissions" and look for "Microphone." While this controls microphone access rather than TTS directly, disabling microphone access prevents certain voice features from functioning. Firefox's TTS support is limited compared to Chrome, but if you've installed extensions that add TTS functionality, you can disable or remove these extensions from the Add-ons menu.

In Safari on Mac, text-to-speech is controlled through System Preferences rather than within Safari itself. Open System Preferences, go to Accessibility, then select "Spoken Content." Here you can disable "Speak Selection" and "Speak Screen," which applies to Safari and other Mac applications. The settings mirror the iPhone/iPad process, since Apple synchronizes accessibility features across devices.

Microsoft Edge includes a "Read Aloud" feature that works similarly to Chrome. In Edge, click the three-dot menu, look for "Read aloud," and you can enable or disable this feature. The setting
