Learn How to Turn Off Notifications on Your Devices

Understanding Why You Might Want to Turn Off Notifications

Notifications are messages that pop up on your devices to tell you about new emails, texts, social media updates, news alerts, and app activities. While notifications can be useful for staying informed about important information, they can also become distracting and interrupt your daily work or personal time. Research from the University of California indicates that the average person receives between 40 to 60 notifications per day across all their devices and applications. This constant stream of alerts can affect concentration, sleep quality, and overall well-being.

Understanding when and why you want notifications is the first step toward managing them. Some notifications are genuinely important—like alerts from your bank about unusual activity or messages from family members. Other notifications, like reminders about sales at online retailers or suggestions to use an app you rarely open, may not add value to your life. By taking control of your notification settings, you can create a personalized experience that keeps you informed about what matters to you while reducing unnecessary interruptions.

Many people find that turning off certain notifications leads to better focus during work hours, improved sleep at night, and reduced anxiety. Studies have shown that people who manage their notifications report feeling less stressed and more in control of their digital lives. This guide describes how to navigate the settings on various devices to customize your notification preferences according to your needs.

Practical Takeaway: Before changing any settings, think about which notifications genuinely serve your needs and which ones distract you. This reflection will help you make intentional choices about what to keep enabled.

How to Turn Off Notifications on iPhone and iPad

Apple devices provide several layers of notification control built into their operating system. The Settings app on your iPhone or iPad is where you manage these options. To begin, open the Settings app (the gray gear icon), then scroll down and tap "Notifications." This screen displays all applications installed on your device, organized alphabetically. Each app listing shows whether notifications are currently on or off for that application.

For individual apps, tap on the app name to see detailed options. You can toggle the "Allow Notifications" switch off to prevent that app from sending any alerts. If you want to keep notifications but change how they appear, you have several options: you can choose whether notifications appear as banners (temporary notifications at the top of the screen), alerts (notifications that require you to take action), or badges (small numbers on the app icon). You can also decide whether notifications make sounds, vibrate your device, or appear on your lock screen.

Another powerful feature on iPhones and iPads is "Focus" modes, found in Settings under "Focus." Focus modes let you create custom profiles for different times of day or activities. For example, you can set up a "Work" focus that allows only work-related app notifications, a "Sleep" focus that silences all notifications at night, or a "Driving" focus that minimizes distractions while you're on the road. When you activate a Focus, only the notifications you've specifically allowed will come through. You can also set schedules so certain Focus modes turn on automatically at set times.

For email specifically, open the Mail app, go to Settings (or Mail settings), and adjust notification preferences by account. You can turn notifications off entirely for an email account or choose to be notified only for messages from specific contacts marked as VIP.

Practical Takeaway: Start by reviewing your most-used apps and turning off notifications for those that aren't time-sensitive. Then explore Focus modes to create quiet periods for sleep or work.

Managing Notifications on Android Devices

Android devices, which include phones and tablets from Samsung, Google, and other manufacturers, also offer comprehensive notification controls. The exact location of these settings may vary slightly depending on your device manufacturer and Android version, but the general process is similar. Open Settings, then look for "Apps," "Applications," or "Notifications" (the naming varies by device). From there, you'll see a list of installed applications.

Tap on any app to view its notification settings. You'll typically find options to turn off notifications completely, choose the notification style, set sound preferences, and decide whether notifications appear on your lock screen. On most Android devices, you can also access notification settings by long-pressing an app icon on your home screen and looking for a notification preferences option in the menu that appears.

Android also includes a feature called "Do Not Disturb," which is similar to iOS Focus modes. To access this, open Settings and look for "Sound" or "Sound and Vibration," then find "Do Not Disturb." You can turn this feature on to silence calls, texts, and notifications. You can customize which contacts are allowed to reach you even when Do Not Disturb is active—useful for family members or important work contacts. You can set schedules so Do Not Disturb turns on automatically during certain times, such as evening or nighttime hours.

For Google Pixel phones specifically, there's also a "Bedtime Mode" or similar feature that combines notification silencing with reduced screen brightness to discourage nighttime phone use. Other Android manufacturers may have their own branded versions of similar features. Gmail notifications can be managed within the Gmail app by going to Settings, selecting your account, and adjusting notification preferences for that email account.

Practical Takeaway: If you have an Android device, set up Do Not Disturb with a schedule that covers your sleep hours, then customize app notifications one by one as you identify which ones you truly need.

Turning Off Notifications on Windows and Mac Computers

Computers also generate notifications that can interrupt your work. On Windows 10 and Windows 11, you can manage notifications through the Settings app. Click the Start button, then Settings, then go to "System" and select "Notifications." This screen shows a master toggle to turn all notifications on or off, as well as individual controls for which apps can send notifications. You can also choose whether notifications appear in the notification center (accessible by clicking the notification icon in the bottom right corner of your screen).

For specific apps, scroll down in the Notifications settings to find the app you want to control. Click on it to see options for that application. You can turn notifications off entirely, control whether sounds play, and decide whether the app can show notifications on your lock screen. Windows also lets you customize notification styles—some apps can send urgent notifications that appear as pop-ups, while others send quieter notifications that appear only in the notification center.

On Mac computers, click the Apple menu and open "System Preferences" or "System Settings" (depending on your macOS version). Look for "Notifications" or "Notifications & Focus." Here you'll find a list of applications and their notification settings. Click on each app to customize whether it can send notifications, what kind of sounds it makes, and how alerts appear. Mac computers also have Focus modes similar to iOS, accessible from the same Notifications & Focus settings area or from the Control Center (click the icon in the top right corner of your screen).

Both Windows and Mac allow you to create schedules for when you don't want to receive notifications. On Mac, you can set Focus modes to turn on at specific times or activate them manually. This is especially useful for creating a work-focused setting during business hours or a sleep-focused setting during your rest hours. Email clients like Outlook or Apple Mail have their own notification settings found within the application itself.

Practical Takeaway: Create a dedicated work Focus mode on your computer and enable it during times when you need deep concentration, then revisit these settings monthly as you download new applications.

Controlling Notifications on Smartwatches and Wearables

Smartwatches and fitness trackers also send notifications, and managing them can significantly reduce interruptions throughout your day. Most smartwatches, whether they run watchOS (Apple Watch), Wear OS (used by many Android watch manufacturers), or proprietary operating systems, receive notifications mirrored from your phone unless you specifically configure them otherwise.

On an Apple Watch, open the Watch app on your paired iPhone, then go to "Notifications." Here you'll see all your apps listed with toggle switches to allow or block notifications on your watch. You can also decide whether notifications require you to unlock your watch to read them or whether they appear as simple indicators. By default, notifications that come to your iPhone also come to your watch, but you can turn this mirroring off for specific apps.

For Android smartwatches, the process depends on your specific device. Most Android watches have a Settings menu accessible from the watch itself. Look for "Apps," "Notifications," or
