Learn How to Turn Off Device and App Notifications

Understanding Notifications and Why You Might Want to Turn Them Off

Notifications are messages that appear on your devices to alert you about new information. They can pop up as sounds, vibrations, visual alerts on your screen, or badges showing a number on app icons. Notifications come from many sources: text messages, emails, social media apps, news applications, games, and built-in system messages. While notifications can be useful for staying informed, they can also become overwhelming and disrupt your daily activities.

Many people receive dozens or even hundreds of notifications each day. Studies show that frequent interruptions from notifications can reduce focus and productivity. Notifications can also drain your device's battery, use data, and create unnecessary stress or anxiety. Some people find constant notifications distracting while working, studying, or spending time with family. Others simply prefer to check their devices on their own schedule rather than being prompted by alerts.

The good news is that you have significant control over which notifications you receive and how they appear. You don't have to turn off all notifications—most devices and apps let you customize notification settings so you only receive alerts that matter to you. You can silence certain apps while keeping notifications from others. You can also change notification settings to reduce interruptions during specific times, like work hours or bedtime.

Understanding your notification options helps you create a more manageable digital environment. Different devices and applications have different notification systems, so learning how yours works puts you in control of your own experience.

Practical Takeaway: Before changing settings, think about which notifications genuinely matter to you and which ones you'd rather not receive. This will help you make targeted changes rather than turning everything off.

How to Manage Notifications on iPhone and iPad Devices

Apple devices like iPhones and iPads have a built-in notification system that lets you control alerts from each app individually. To access notification settings on these devices, open the Settings app (the gray gear icon) and look for "Notifications" in the menu. This section shows a list of all apps installed on your device and their current notification status.

For each app, you can toggle notifications on or off completely. When you tap on a specific app name in the Notifications settings, you'll see several customization options. The "Allow Notifications" toggle turns notifications from that app on or off. If you turn this off, you won't receive any alerts from that app at all. Below this toggle, you'll find options for how notifications appear.

Apple devices offer several notification styles: Lock Screen (alerts appear on your device's lock screen), Notification Center (alerts collect in your notification center that you can view by swiping down), and Banners (temporary notifications that appear at the top of your screen and disappear after a few seconds). You can choose which style you prefer for each app. You can also control the notification sound—selecting from various sounds or choosing "None" for silent notifications. The badge setting lets you decide whether a number appears on the app icon showing how many unread items you have.

For apps you want to keep but don't want to bother you constantly, consider turning on "Critical Alerts Only" if available, which limits notifications to only the most important messages. You can also set "Focus" modes (like Work, Sleep, or Driving) that automatically limit notifications during certain times or situations. When a Focus mode is active, only selected people and apps can send notifications through.

Practical Takeaway: Start by going to Settings > Notifications and disabling notifications for apps you rarely use or find distracting. Keep notifications on for apps that genuinely matter to you, like messages from important contacts.

Managing Notifications on Android Devices

Android devices, which include phones and tablets from manufacturers like Samsung, Google, and others, have notification controls built into the system. The way to access these settings varies slightly depending on your device manufacturer, but the basic process is similar. Open your Settings app and look for "Apps," "Applications," or "Notifications"—the exact name depends on your device model and Android version.

Once you're in the app notification settings, you'll see a list of installed applications. Tap on any app name to see its notification options. Most Android devices let you turn notifications completely on or off for each app using a toggle switch. You can also access more detailed notification settings, such as choosing whether notifications appear silently or with sound, vibration, or light notifications.

Android has a feature called "Do Not Disturb" mode that works similarly to Apple's Focus modes. When you turn on Do Not Disturb, you can silence notifications during specific times, though you can usually allow certain contacts or apps to come through. To set this up, look in your Settings for "Sound," "Sound and Vibration," or "Notifications" and find the Do Not Disturb option. You can schedule Do Not Disturb to turn on automatically at set times, like during your sleep hours or work hours.

Another useful Android feature is notification channels. Some apps let you customize notifications by category within the app itself. For example, a social media app might let you turn off notifications for new posts but keep notifications for direct messages. To see these options, go to an app's notification settings and look for "Advanced" or additional configuration options.

You can also manage notifications from the notification panel itself. When a notification appears, you can swipe it away, or on most Android devices, tap and hold a notification to see options to turn off notifications from that app or customize how they appear.

Practical Takeaway: Use Android's Do Not Disturb feature to create quiet times automatically. Schedule it to turn on during sleep hours and work time so you're not interrupted, but notifications will resume when you need them.

Turning Off Email Notifications and Customizing Email Alerts

Email notifications can be among the most frequent and disruptive alerts people receive. Most email services—including Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo Mail, and others—give you options to control when and how you're notified about new messages. The steps vary depending on which email service you use, but the general principles are similar across platforms.

In Gmail, you can adjust notification settings in the mobile app by opening the app menu, going to Settings, selecting your email account, and then finding "Notifications." Here you can turn notifications on or off completely, choose which notifications to receive (like for all mail or only important mail), and select what sound plays when you get an email notification. Gmail also lets you set quiet hours, during which you won't receive email notifications even though emails will still arrive.

In Outlook and other email services, notification controls are usually found in Settings or Preferences. You can typically choose to receive notifications for all new messages, or only for messages from specific contacts or senders. Some email services let you set different notification rules for different times of day. For example, you might choose to receive notifications during work hours but silence them in the evening.

Consider customizing your email notifications by importance rather than turning them off completely. Many email services can identify which emails might be most important to you—perhaps messages from your boss, family members, or clients. You can set notifications to only alert you for these priority senders while staying silent for newsletters, promotional emails, and other bulk messages. This approach keeps you connected to truly important communications while reducing unnecessary notifications.

If you receive a large volume of promotional or newsletter emails, consider unsubscribing from those senders or creating email filters that automatically sort these messages into separate folders. This reduces both your notification volume and email clutter. Many email services have built-in tools to help you unsubscribe from bulk emails and manage mailing lists.

Practical Takeaway: Set email notifications to only alert you for important senders rather than turning off email notifications entirely. This keeps you informed about urgent messages while reducing overall notification volume.

Controlling Social Media and App-Specific Notifications

Social media apps and other services often send numerous notifications about likes, comments, new followers, and other updates. These notifications can be particularly disruptive because apps are designed to encourage frequent checking. Fortunately, you have considerable control over what notifications these apps send.

Most social media apps—including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, TikTok, Snapchat, and others—have notification settings within the app itself. Open the app, find the Settings or Preferences menu (usually represented by a gear icon), and look for "Notifications." Here you can typically choose which types of notifications to receive. For example, you might turn off notifications for likes and comments but keep notifications for direct messages from friends. You can
