Learn How to Turn Off Autoplay on Videos and Music

Understanding Autoplay and Why You Might Want to Turn It Off

Autoplay is a feature that automatically plays the next video or song when your current content finishes. Most streaming platforms—including YouTube, Netflix, Spotify, and social media apps like TikTok and Instagram—include autoplay by default. When enabled, autoplay will seamlessly transition to the next recommended video or song without requiring any action from you.

Many people find autoplay convenient because it keeps entertainment flowing without interruption. However, there are several practical reasons why you might want to disable this feature. Autoplay can consume significant amounts of data, which matters if you have a limited mobile plan. A single hour of video streaming can use between 500 MB to 3 GB of data depending on video quality. If you're watching on a limited connection, autoplay will rapidly deplete your data allowance.

Battery life is another consideration. Autoplay keeps your device's screen active and your processor working, which drains your battery faster. If you're using a smartphone or tablet away from a charger, turning off autoplay can extend your device's usable time by 20-40 percent, depending on how much you normally watch.

Autoplay can also affect your sleep and focus. Many people open a video "for just one more" and find themselves watching 10 videos an hour later because autoplay keeps playing new content. This can interfere with bedtime routines or work productivity. Additionally, autoplay may expose you to inappropriate content if you're sharing a device with children, since the algorithm might recommend videos that aren't suitable for younger viewers.

Practical Takeaway: Before you adjust autoplay settings, consider whether your main concerns are data usage, battery life, screen time management, or content control for children. Your reason for turning off autoplay will help you decide which platform's settings to adjust first.

How to Disable Autoplay on YouTube

YouTube's autoplay feature is one of the most commonly used settings because many people spend significant time on the platform. The process for turning off autoplay differs slightly depending on whether you're using YouTube on a web browser, mobile app, or television.

On a desktop or laptop using a web browser, start by signing into your YouTube account. Look for your profile picture in the top-right corner of the screen and click on it. A dropdown menu will appear with several options. Select "Settings" from this menu. You'll be taken to your account settings page. In the left sidebar, click on "Playback and performance." In the main content area, you'll see a toggle switch next to "Autoplay" with the label "Autoplay is on." Click this toggle to turn autoplay off. The switch will change appearance, indicating that autoplay is now disabled. When autoplay is off, YouTube will pause at the end of each video rather than automatically playing the next one.

On the YouTube mobile app (available on both Android and iOS), the process is slightly different. Open the YouTube app and tap your profile picture in the top-right corner. Select "Settings" from the menu. Tap "General." Look for the option labeled "Autoplay" and tap it. You'll see two choices: "Autoplay on home" and "Autoplay on home and subscriptions." To turn autoplay completely off, you may need to disable it in your playback settings instead. Go back to Settings, select "Playback and performance," and toggle off autoplay there.

If you're using YouTube on a smart TV or streaming device, start playing any video. Look for the autoplay indicator, which typically appears in the upper-right corner of the screen when a video is playing. Press the button or select the toggle to turn off autoplay. On some TV models, you may need to access settings through the YouTube app itself rather than during playback.

Practical Takeaway: Check which devices you use YouTube on most frequently and disable autoplay on those first. You can have different autoplay settings on different devices, so you might turn it off on your phone but keep it on your television if you prefer.

Managing Autoplay Settings on Spotify and Music Streaming Services

Spotify and other music streaming services handle autoplay somewhat differently than video platforms. On Spotify, autoplay will play similar songs or related artists when your current playlist or album finishes. This feature uses data and battery, and many people prefer to control what they listen to rather than letting an algorithm decide.

On the Spotify web player (accessed through a browser on your computer), click the down arrow next to your username in the top-right corner. Select "Settings." Scroll down until you find the "Playback" section. Look for the toggle switch next to "Autoplay." Click it to turn autoplay off. When autoplay is disabled, Spotify will simply stop playing music when your current song, album, or playlist ends.

On the Spotify mobile app (Android or iPhone), tap the home icon at the bottom left. Tap the settings gear icon in the top-right corner. Scroll down to find "Playback." In this section, you'll see a toggle for "Autoplay." Tap the toggle to disable it. The app will immediately stop playing music when playlists end.

Other popular music services have similar settings. Apple Music users should open the app, tap the "Listen Now" tab, select their profile picture, and find "Playback Preferences" to disable autoplay. Amazon Music users can go to Settings, select "Playback," and turn off autoplay. YouTube Music (Google's music service) has autoplay controls in the same Settings menu where you'd find them for YouTube videos.

One important note: some streaming services distinguish between autoplay for playlists and autoplay for radio stations. A playlist will play only the songs you added, so turning off autoplay simply stops playback. A radio station, however, is designed to generate new content continuously, so autoplay may work differently or have separate controls.

Practical Takeaway: Check your primary music streaming service's settings today. Most services place autoplay controls in playback or playback preferences settings. If you use multiple services, you can turn off autoplay on your most-used platform first and adjust others as needed.

Controlling Autoplay on Netflix and Streaming Video Services

Netflix uses autoplay in two ways: it automatically plays preview videos when you hover over titles on the home screen, and it automatically plays the next episode when one episode finishes. Many people find the preview autoplay particularly distracting because it fills the screen with sound and movement while you're trying to browse. Fortunately, both types of autoplay can be disabled.

To turn off preview autoplay on Netflix's web version, click your profile picture in the top-right corner and select "Account." Look for "Playback settings" in the account menu. You'll see a checkbox labeled "Autoplay previews while browsing on all devices." Uncheck this box to prevent Netflix from automatically playing previews when you browse titles. There's a separate checkbox for "Autoplay next episode in a series on all devices." Uncheck this as well if you want Netflix to pause between episodes rather than automatically starting the next one.

On the Netflix app (mobile or TV), the process varies slightly by device. On mobile, tap the menu icon (three horizontal lines) at the bottom-right, then select "App Settings." Look for "Autoplay" or "Playback" options. On smart TV apps, the settings are typically accessed through the app's menu system. You may need to navigate to Account Settings or Playback Preferences to find autoplay controls.

Other streaming services like Disney+, Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, and HBO Max have similar features. Disney+ users can access autoplay settings through their profile menu and account settings. Amazon Prime Video places autoplay controls in Playback Settings. These services typically offer separate controls for preview autoplay and episode autoplay, giving you granular control over your viewing experience.

Some services also offer a compromise option: instead of completely disabling autoplay for next episodes, you can set it to pause with a countdown timer. This gives you a few seconds to decide whether you want to watch the next episode or stop for the day. This option is useful if you want to break the automatic playback habit but still have the option to continue if you choose.

Practical Takeaway: Visit your streaming service's account settings this week and address both preview autoplay and episode autoplay. Turning off preview autoplay alone can make browsing significantly quieter and less distracting.
