Learn How to Switch to RCS Messaging on Android

What RCS Messaging Is and How It Differs From SMS

RCS stands for Rich Communication Services. It's a messaging standard that builds on the traditional SMS (Short Message Service) that has existed since the 1990s. While SMS delivers basic text messages limited to 160 characters, RCS offers a more advanced messaging experience similar to what you might find in apps like WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger.

The key differences between RCS and SMS include message length, file sharing, and visual elements. With RCS, you can send messages much longer than 160 characters without them being broken into multiple messages. You can share photos, videos, and audio files directly through RCS without needing a separate app. RCS also shows when someone is typing, displays read receipts so you know when your message was seen, and allows group chat features with up to 100 people.

SMS has been the standard messaging method on phones for decades because it works on every device and network worldwide. However, SMS is limited in what it can do. Messages are plain text only, they can't show whether someone read your message, and sharing media requires using a photo or video message service that counts against your carrier's limits.

RCS messaging works over data connections (WiFi or mobile data) rather than relying solely on cellular networks. This means RCS can provide richer features while using the same phone number you currently have. Your phone doesn't need a new SIM card or number to use RCS—it works with your existing setup.

Practical Takeaway: RCS is the next generation of text messaging built into your phone. It offers features like read receipts, typing indicators, larger file sharing, and better group chats—all while using your existing phone number and contact list.

Checking Your Android Phone's RCS Compatibility

Not all Android phones support RCS messaging yet, though the number of compatible devices grows regularly. Most newer Android phones manufactured after 2018 support RCS, but some older models may not have the required technology. Your phone's manufacturer, operating system version, and carrier all play a role in whether RCS works on your device.

To check if your phone supports RCS, first look at your Android version. Go to Settings, scroll down to "About Phone," and find "Android Version." RCS generally works best on Android 5.0 and newer, though some features may require Android 6.0 or later. Google Pixel phones (all models), Samsung Galaxy S series phones from S6 and newer, OnePlus devices, Motorola phones, and many others support RCS. Older budget phones or devices that haven't received recent updates may not support it.

Your carrier also matters. Major US carriers including T-Mobile, Verizon, and AT&T support RCS, though some regional carriers may not offer it yet. Sprint merged with T-Mobile, and their RCS support transferred to T-Mobile's network. Check your carrier's website or contact their customer service to confirm RCS is offered in your area.

Even if your phone technically supports RCS, it must be running a reasonably current version of your phone's operating system. Phones running very old Android versions may not have access to RCS features. If you haven't updated your phone's software in over a year, you may need to install recent updates before RCS becomes available.

Practical Takeaway: Check your Android version (Settings > About Phone), confirm your phone model was made after 2018, and verify your carrier supports RCS. These three factors determine whether your phone can use RCS messaging.

Configuring RCS Through Google Messages App

Google Messages is the recommended app for using RCS on most Android phones. This app comes pre-installed on many modern Android devices, particularly Google Pixel phones, but can also be installed on other compatible Android phones from the Google Play Store. Google Messages serves as your default text messaging app and includes built-in RCS functionality.

To set up RCS through Google Messages, first make sure the app is installed on your phone. Open the Google Play Store, search for "Google Messages," and if it's not already installed, install it. Once installed, open Google Messages and you should see a prompt asking if you want to make it your default messaging app. Select "Yes" or "Make Default" to proceed. This tells your phone to use Google Messages for all text conversations.

After setting Google Messages as your default app, look for an option related to RCS or chat features. In Google Messages, tap the three-line menu (hamburger icon) in the top left corner and look for "Settings." Under Settings, find "Chat Features" or "Advanced." This section will show the status of RCS on your phone. If RCS is available and not yet turned on, there should be an option to enable it. Tap on the RCS or Chat Features option and toggle it on.

Once you enable RCS, your phone will attempt to register with your carrier's RCS network. This registration typically happens automatically within a few minutes, but sometimes takes longer. During this process, you may see a notification or message saying "Chat features are being set up" or similar. Once registration completes, you'll see a notification confirming RCS is active. Some phones display a small icon indicating which conversations support RCS features.

Practical Takeaway: Install Google Messages from the Play Store, make it your default messaging app, open Settings > Chat Features, and toggle RCS on. Your phone will automatically register with your carrier's network within minutes.

Switching RCS in Samsung Messages and Other Messaging Apps

While Google Messages is the most common RCS option, Samsung phones include a built-in Samsung Messages app that also supports RCS. If you prefer using Samsung's messaging app or your phone came with it pre-installed, you can enable RCS there as well. Other messaging apps may also support RCS, though functionality varies.

For Samsung Messages on Galaxy phones, open the app and look for the settings menu (usually three dots in the top right corner). Select "Settings" and look for an option called "Chat Features," "Advanced Features," or "RCS." Toggle this option on. Your phone will then attempt to register with your carrier's RCS network, similar to the process with Google Messages. Samsung Messages will notify you when RCS registration is complete.

Some Android users prefer third-party messaging apps like Textra, Chomp, or others from the Google Play Store. While many of these apps offer improved features over the default messaging experience, RCS support varies. Some apps support RCS directly, while others don't. If you use a third-party messaging app and want RCS, check the app's settings for RCS or Chat Features options. If your preferred app doesn't support RCS, you can still use Google Messages or Samsung Messages alongside it for RCS conversations, then use your preferred app for other chats.

It's worth noting that you can only have one messaging app sending and receiving SMS and RCS messages at a time. If you set Google Messages as your default, Samsung Messages won't receive new text messages. To switch between them, go to Settings > Apps > Default Apps > SMS App (or Messages) and select which app you want to use. This doesn't delete any conversation history, but new messages will arrive in your chosen default app.

Practical Takeaway: You can enable RCS in Samsung Messages, other apps, or Google Messages. Choose one as your default messaging app, and enable RCS in that app's settings. Check with any third-party messaging app to see if it supports RCS before switching to it.

Understanding RCS Features and How to Use Them

Once RCS is enabled on your phone, you'll notice several new capabilities when messaging other people who also have RCS enabled. These features make texting more interactive and informative. Understanding what each feature does helps you get the most from RCS messaging.

Read receipts show whether the person you're texting has read your message. In Google Messages or Samsung Messages with RCS enabled, you'll see small checkmarks next to your messages. One checkmark means the message was sent, two checkmarks mean it was delivered, and a filled checkmark or icon indicates the recipient has read it. This works both ways—others can see when you've read their messages too. If you prefer privacy, many RCS apps allow you to turn off read receipts in settings, though this means you won't see others' read receipts either.

Typing indicators show when someone is currently typing a message to you. When a contact is composing a
